First time I ever recall seeing a "hot food bar" was in the corner delis and bodegas in New York City, must have been 30-40 years ago. That made sense, people rushing home from work, late, wanted a hot, somewhat balanced meal that they didn't have to fuss with it. Along came the concept of "groceraunt" (but years before that term was coined) and grocery stores started adding full service hot deli counters, which then evolved into the "bar" - a dozen or more hot entrees along with mass appeal sides - mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, stewed carrots and the like. The sides accompanied fairly standard hot dishes, meatloaf, fried chicken in various forms, chicken and dumplings, stews, baked or fried fish and the like. I'm willing to bet a lot of money that none of these foods are prepared in-house, but come in large tinfoil pans fully cooked, probably frozen, waiting for the "heat and eat" stage and to be dumped onto the food bar. A giant version of TV dinners, if you will. If it's a large grocery, it's likely there is an accompanying "salad bar" that also includes a half dozen soup offerings. Both the hot food and salad are priced by the pound, and it varies depending on the chain and the zip code. I've seen them from $6- $9 per pound. (Expert tip - "liquid" has weight. Watch that you keep liquid accompanying your entree or side to a minimum). If I'm ever in the mood for the hot bar concept, I try limit my grazing to the upmarket groceries, Whole Foods or regional choices. Better quality, larger variety, but more expensive, of course. Whereas your regular grocery might have beef burger tomato goulash, the upmarket places are going to offer pad thai and that type of thing. So passing by my local Jewel-Oscos (I purposely avoid them, they are spendy compared to competitors, and with no real right to be spendy, plus their big "sale" prices, especially the BOGOs are hilariously dishonest), I thought I'd graze the hot bar just for something to write about. Friday is "wing day" apparently and they were offering maybe eight different styles of chicken wings, and a couple types of "boneless wings" which aren't wings at all, are they? So I tried some "Buffalo" boneless wings, meatballs in marinara, and fried cod (hey, it is lent). My feelings about the dishes are as follows: Why do they call them "boneless wings?" I realize anything "nugget" related is associated with McD, but why not bits? Mini tenders? Something. The buffalo flavoring wasn't. I think they mixed up the trays, and what I ended up having was boneless wings of General Tso variety. They were sweet, with a little heat, and deep fried. Not a trace of buffalo seasoning flavor. These weren't billed as "all white meat" because they weren't. There was some white, some grey, whatever that was. Diced chicken parts rolled together in the batter. Meatball. Zero flavor, very dense. It wasn't billed as "Italian" but swimming in a red sauce, one might (like me) assume it would be Italian, but no garlic, oregano, basil, fennel. Just meat. Of an unknown origin. I'm gonna go with pork, because of the color. No noticeable bread crumbs or filler. Fried cod. Like the chicken, these are bits of fish rolled into a batter and fried. It was the best of the three things I tried, and I'm not a big cod fan, but on any Friday night in Chicagoland or Southern Wisconsin, you'll see restaurants offering all you can eat cod, fried or baked, at a pretty low price. Popular in these parts. There must be a lot of cod left in the ocean, though Newfoundlanders would disagree with you. That's about it for the Jewel Osco hot food bar. I won't make it a regular thing. read more

This isn't my first choice if I'm looking for groceries, but because it's right next to work, I have gone in quite a few times now. There are certain grocery stores that look older, that haven't gotten a facelift in a while. That is how I feel about this Jewel Osco. It looks like it could be updated. It's clean and I always can find friendly staff, but I can't always find what I want at this location. Of course, that could be because of the current situation we're all facing. I can always get fast service at the register, which is great, and everyone has been very friendly. The biggest problem for me is their parking lot. There are so many blind spots in that lot. You have to take your chances every now and then and hope that no one is coming in the opposite direction. I would suggest shopping at off times for that reason. The parking lot needs a lot of work. I had great service at the Starbucks located inside of this Jewel. Very clean and they served me a delicious Iced Chai Latte. I'd go back to pick up a drink after shopping again. read more

I am surprised I am writing a review about Jewel, but there are a few things I would like to mention about this specific store. It is a remarkably clean and well maintained grocery store. Great assortment of fruits, vegetables, baked goods, meats, liquor/beer, etc. It's also nice that the employees are very friendly and helpful. Lemme start by saying this jewel location has never let me down. They always got a solid group of staff working every shift. This evening I was even more impressed by a gentleman named Ethan that happened to be running the carts in from outside. I was walking my cart to the car and two cases of soda had fallen out and Ethan lunged into action as quick as a ninja and popped those bad boys back into the cart then proceeded to help us put our groceries into the car. This was formerly a Dominicks store up to 5 years or so ago. I know many of the employees by name. Very friendly and helpful and they work their butts off. That said, here it comes. Their roasted whole chickens and fried chicken dinners suck. Very little meat and way over priced for what you get. The Costco chickens yield at least twice as much meat and are cheaper. And the meat....oy vey, Basically "range" grade but at at serious prices. Produce. Tends to deteriorate very quickly. Bags of clementines damn near rot before getting home. Bakery. OMG. Generally mediocre. Pies are a rip off big time. I could go on but I give 2 stars primarily for convenience and employees efforts. Problems not their fault but rather higher ups. read more

The people who work at our local Fox River Grove Jewel-Osco are very friendly and helpful. It's the Jewel corporate policy that gets a failing grade. They try to force customers to buy more than they want or need. For example: At the checkout counter I did not get the sales price of raspberries 2 containers for $5.00, or $2.50 each because I only wanted one container. I asked the checker what the price was and he said $3.98. I told him to put the raspberries back because I can go elsewhere and buy 1 container and not be forced to buy 2. My pet peeve with Jewel is that they will only sell bowls of pre-cut watermelon chunks 3 bowls for $12.00. They will not sell you 1 bowl for $4.00. Jewel did not want my $2.50 or my $4.00 yesterday. That is why I buy 99% of my food at Aldi. read more

I love this location! They have the upscale whole-foods type feel - nicer decor, free samples, a large natural foods section and a really big produce section. I'm extremely impressed! I hope the traffic in the store picks up a bit and that this one sticks around. Improvements? There's no 5-gallon water dispensary, the employees handing out samples are awkwardly anxious and under-friendly at times, expanding the gluten free and vegan foods options. read more

Not sure how this place possibly gets so many five star ratings. Employees? Friends of employees? Looks more like a Facebook review. I suspect because most of the more positive reviews were written in 2017 and before. Yes, this Jewel USED to be great in years past. I recently posted on Nextdoor to warn people to check their receipts, as I have been overcharged (funny how these "accidents" are ALWAYS in Jewel's favor) with an amazing frequency at this location. People came out of the woodwork to comment that the same has happened to them. People also warned to check the expiration dates of products on the shelves. That is a bad sign because that's EXACTLY what was happening at this Dominick's location before they went under. Aside from those things, the quality of the produce has plummeted. And Jewel is EXPENSIVE. It has basically become a convenience stop for me. Apparently the people leaving these five star reviews have never heard of Heinen's. Yes, it's expensive (like Jewel has become), but the service and quality is head and shoulders above. read more

This has got to be the nicest Jewel I have ever visited, and I have been in the Chicagoland area my entire life. The inside is phenomenally designed, and everything is brand new. They have a large fresh salad bar, a great sushi selection and tons of produce. It seems that the items in the store were never ending. All of the store associates were so helpful and with a handful of items we were directed to an express checkout which was much more convenient than waiting in a long line. It's too bad the Jewel stores in my area aren't nearly as nice as this, I would certainly make this my main grocery destination if I was able to. read more

Yes, this is a beautiful store - it should be for the mark-ups here. Instead of fancy fixtures and designer-like arrangements, it would be beneficial to have more than 1 open check-out register lane, and employees who are not only approachable but knowledgable. Prices are not clearly marked on items, and many displays pop up almost purposefully misleading - be sure to watch what you're being charged, price gouging surfaces. Best factor: location, location, location. read more
