I have been going to Mariano's for quite some time now and about 1 to 4 times a month lately. I have bought sandwiches that have been marked down because the date is near and the bread has been stale already even though it's within a day or two of the sell by date. I have also bought things from the bakery that have been marked down and they have been very stale even though the sell by date was one to two days into the future. So a couple days ago I buy this pork prepackaged and not entirely inexpensive and I go to cook it today. It's been in the refrigerator and the sale by date is tomorrow, but it looks so discolored and old. I'm not even going to try to open it and smell it. I'm taking it back tomorrow and I'm really sick and tired of taking things back to the grocery stores that are rotten. It is a drive to any of them and i may or may not have enough time to drive back, find a place to park, and go in and take care of business. I have ended up just throwing things out like little bakery items that were a couple bucks or a sandwich that was three or four instead of eight or six dollars. I think my days of shopping at Mariano's are over. Definitely stay away from markdowns, Also Their prices on most things are not cheap but I will say usually their full price fresh veggies and fruit are good and fresh. First off, I want to start by saying that I've been coming to this Mariano's location for years and have never had an experience as awful as I did on May 30th 2026. The deli clerks have always been friendly and personable until I had to deal with EILEEN yesterday. Never have I felt like I was a burden instead of normal paying customer. I'm not one to complain but she just left a bad taste in my mouth. Just completely rude and abrasive from the start. I asked her to slice my ham thin and when she showed me the slice, I asked if she could make it a little thinner and she gave me the dirtiest look, as if I was inconveniencing her. Her attitude was even worse after that. I didn't even bother ordering the rest of what I needed after she finished the ham. Now I'm reconsidering even coming back to this store at all. I shouldn't have to worry about whether or not she's going to be working when I want to come in for cold cuts. She needs some serious ethics training or therapy to deal with whatever she has going on, to not take it out on customers. I'd avoid her at all costs. read more

I had my old card I used for years and one day it wouldn't work so the lady at the desk tells me she has to give me a new one.Ok no problem but after I start the new card all my fuel rewards won't work! I call customer service and after 3 different agents they finally fix it! 2 hrs on the phone!!! The 2nd agent even hung up on me instead of doing what the 3rd agent did and fix it!!! I just wanted to do a "shout out" to the bakery in Crystal Lake. They created a beautiful cake for my husband's landmark birthday and I won't tell you the whole story, but I literally - tripped - with the cake in my hand over a curb, threw the cake like a hockey puck onto the pavement while I was flying through the air from arm's height and it hit full force and slid about five feet on the pavement. I brushed myself off, walked into the restraunt and peeled back the packaging - bracing for a train wreck and guess what? NOT A MARK ON IT! This is our go to store. I purchased salmon yesterday. I only needed a small piece because I froze 1/2 of the salmon I purchased at Mariano's two weeks ago. The salmon on top of the pile looked good but because I needed 1/2 lb the guy searched around for a smaller piece under the nice filets and pulled out a real old piece of rubber. I didn't notice until I got home. It was inedible and went into the garbage. We split the small piece from the freezer instead. The fish monger should have noticed this and put that fish in the garbage. We could have gotten sick. read more

Will never work for Kroger again. Was hired in 2021 and had covid and couldn't work and was terminated because of having Covid. Absolutely best grocery store ever! Drinks while you shop! Yes there's a bar you can get wine or draft beers the beers selections change weekly and they are amazing great IPA's and only $4 shop while you enjoy a nice cold drink. The bartenders are funny and very nice, make sure you take cash to tip them. Fridays they have live music and more drinks at the bar, there's an area you can sit and enjoy this. Also outdoors sitting if you want to take your drinks and hot food purchases out. They are like a signature Kroger, make sure you download all your coupons and come shop for what you need, I feel like I save more here , specially with the weekly deals they have, and you get gas points with every purchase. I've gotten over $1 off my gas with all my points, well worth it. It's a big store , fresh baked goods sold daily. Challah bread is the best I've had in a while so delicious! Service is amazing , the cashiers and the stock people are always nice and greet you. read more

I come here once every two weeks to get my deli and weekly lunches for the family. We are a pork free household and every 2 weeks I order deli. Associates have to deep clean machines for me and I am BEYOND GRATEFUL. I take in consideration the peak times and go super early or late in the evening. I would hate for anyone to wait longer than they have to. I would like to recommend Meredith at Deli. She is AWESOME and goes above and beyond for customer care; something we haven't seen in a long time! I love coming here and seeing her especially when she takes care of me. Thank you Meredith. For at least several months, I've noticed changes at Mariano's in Crystal Lake. Produce department looks like they had a sale that lasted a week and slim pickings with wilted/rotten looking items. Told the manager when I saw him. The in house thick cut maple bourbon bacon was discontinued and the rest of the bacon is now paper thin. Going forward, I'll use Mariano's for deli , although the last week we got to experience in house bickering and complaining. Salad/hot bar is not consistent and not refreshed as it should be. One of the flower ladies is constantly rude and dismissive. Mariano's was my go to place before. Do better. read more

I'm updating my review. I still stay away from the buffet food because nothing has changed there. However, this is still my favorite store to shop at. We are here all of the time getting great deals. We came in the day after Thanksgiving and picked up nine 20 plus pound fresh turkeys for just over $5 each. These turkeys were originally priced at between $55 and $60 each. These were Butterball Turkeys. We kept two of them and donated the other seven to our local food pantry. These weren't expired turkeys either. The sell by date was still a week away. We have gotten other amazing deals here too. You just have to be here on the right day at the right time. read more

Mariano's food service and hot bar is absolutely disgusting now. I've had it before, it was nothing over the moon but it was edible. I got it today for a quick bite and it was trash. There was hardly a selection. The few "sections" that I did try were gross the chicken wings were all fat and dry. The ribs were honestly the worst thing I've eaten they were gross and so dry. We've loved going to Mariano's in Crystal Lake, but lately it's just not so great. The whole staff that we have to deal with is just not that into good customer service. They just "do their job" with no particular friendliness or care. And to top that, yesterday I bought my favorite sliced cheese, LOL american cheese and it was the worst cheese I've ever tasted!! Listen, I love Mariano's and especially since there's no Whole Foods close by, I can find some important dietary options (gf, dairy free) from brands that are hard to find elsewhere. Still, the prices are on the average way higher for some standard items that I can get elsewhere, which makes it hard for me to shop here in general. Last time I was in, we got a couple of poke bowls and some mac and cheese and chicken fingers from the freshly made food section. The quality was high, and the prices for the convenience were right on. Mariano's remains for me the place to get the one or two hard-to-find items and that's it. read more

To be clear, this review is specifically for the Mariano's Pharmacy in Crystal Lake, IL. We moved to the area in late August. I missed the opportunity to renew my vanity prescription (not covered by insurance) for a lash enhancement product, and my Good Rx app showed Mariano's pharmacies to have the best price. We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and I explained to the pharm tech that I had just moved here, and asked them to call the dr since the refill on the scrip had expired by a few days, because I was moving. The pharmacist intervened and said, and I quote: Just get this filled (where you originally went). I then explained to her that the scrip had expired and they had the best price to refill. She stalked away and then I stated to the tech I'll just call my doctors office and have them call you. Then we left. The next day, Monday, I called my doc's office and they cheerfully informed me that sure, they could call the pharmacy of my choice. Well three days went by and I heard NOTHING so I called Marianos and was informed there was nothing in their system for me. I called my doctors office again and they assured me that they had phoned in per my request, and left a detailed message on voice mail, but would call again. I followed up with Marianos and they said and I quote: oh yeah well we're never getting that (generic product) in and if it comes in it wouldn't necessarily go to you. (Oh really?) BUT we have this $200 bottle of name brand product we could sell you. (Oh REALLY!) So it occurred to me I could go to a different Mariano's and I did and I got WONDERFUL service at a pharmacy near my work in Chicago. Not only was it $18 cheaper than the price on the app, they had it in stock and filled the scrip within 10 minutes. Absolutely no push back or delay. Needless to say, Mariano's in Crystal Lake, IL will never get my money. read more

If you don't mind being treated like an annoyance by everyone that works there, if you like to see one price on the shelf and then be charged a much higher price at checkout, then sure, go to CL Mariano's where everyone hates their job and they bait and switch you on prices. Or better yet, go to Jewel where even if they hate their job they're still relatively nice to customers and if you tell them something was marked differently on the shelf they'll try to make it right for you. read more

Never buy gift cards from Mariano's. I've had three in the last six months that have been compromised and they refuse to do anything if they don't work, even if you have the receipt. Some retailers will call the store to force them to do the right thing, but Amazon will not, but they confirmed that I had bought the card and Mariano's had failed to activate it. Brought one back to the store with the date and approval and the as told "once it leaves the premises it is no longer our responsibility, sorry ". Seriously disappointed in the turn that Mariano's has taken this summer. The quality of their produce took a serious drop after the honeymoon period of their opening was over. This summer has brought a big drop of choices for ingredients to do real baking and cooking. Many of the aisles give the impression of a giant convenience store. Want a frozen pizza or burrito? Mariano's has got your back - dozens of times over. The rearrangement of the aisles is also inconvenient. Every store rearranges from time to time to keep their look fresh but with Mariano's new look product categories are sometimes split by a completely unrelated category - what is the goal of that strategy? Anyway, my trips to Mariano's has dropped to milk and egg runs mostly and I'm shopping somewhere else - whose prices are also more reasonable. read more

It was about time we got a Mariano's in C.L.! Today was opening day (5/1/18) and it was a madhouse! The parking lot is not the best designed lot, especially when you're dealing with the crowds like today. I was forced to park across the street and walk across 14...luckily there was a policeman directing traffic. The prepared foods offering is second to none! The hot bar has tons of great options and they have a quality sushi bar (which is saying a lot for a grocery store), smoke in-house BBQ and tons more. You can even get a steak or sausage grilled up to your liking to eat there or take to go. The center store offering is great, too. Tons of ethnic food options and everything is at competitive prices. Fun fact, did you know that the Mariano's chain is owned by Kroger? If you've never seen Kroger in the Chicagoland area then you are young & vibrant and I'm old. Mariano's has undoubtedly stepped up the grocery game. They always have a stellar cheese and bakery department, an unmatched array of hot prepared foods, and top quality meat & seafood. All others like Jewel and Fresh Thyme only started selling freshly squeezed juice after seeing Mariano's success. Yes we had them grill our bone-in ny strips and ate them there, per the insistence of my pre-teen meat-loving child. That experience was somewhat challenging but was no one's fault but ours. I think Wegmans may be a small step up, but they're not in this area. Right now, visiting the store reminds me of the South Park episode when Whole Foods opened, everyone is showing up and feeling gratified with their loot. Due to it's chaotic, grand opening stage in life, I think we really need to wait it out when it comes to the Crystal Lake location. Since Mariano's has opened, I stop by at least once a week. I like being able to stop at one location to get all my grocery needs, instead of having to stop at 3 different grocery stores to make sure I got the best products for the best price. The salad bar and hot food bar is an added bonus for nights I need a quick up a quick dinner. And I like that you have the option of getting your meat (and I believe your seafood) grilled right in store- something I still need to try. What I don't like is 1.many times the aisles are so narrow due to displays or many times unoccupied carts/grocery carts filled with products or empty boxes, creating grocery cart traffic jams. I wish they would change their layout a bit and try to alleviate areas that get so backed up or move the unnecessary carts that don't need to be just sitting out there. 2. Half the workers aren't sure where things are located. I get it, it's still fairly new, but they don't even try and help you. I've gotten the "I'm sorry I really don't know" and they go on their merrily way. Like seriously you can't ask someone else?? 3. When checking out, why can't they ask if you have any coupons you'd like to use. Many times I forget I have a coupon that's sitting in my bag saving me a few $$. Finally, McHenry County has a Mariano's grocery store! This store is set up similarly to the new big Kroger grocery stores in Ohio. Think Trader Joe's meets Whole Foods with the Friday Freebies of Kroger. No more long trips to Hoffman Estates just for a visit to Mariano's because they sell a specific item that isn't found in our local grocery stores. No more paying Cook County taxes for food and drinks. Went on opening day so didn't get to actually see every part of the store for the sea of people. There is a large bakery filled with a great variety's breads and goodies, including a humongous $10 pretzel! Produce is its own nook separated from the bakery by a gelato station. After the bakery is the deli, fish & meat area across from the cheese nook. Then the aisles of boxed and canned foods; pharmacy; flowers; refrigerator/frozen foods. Upon entering from the parking lot, be sure to stop by the rewards card kiosks to sign up for a store card (if you don't already have one). This will allow you to take advantage of specials and freebies. Keep your eye on your inbox for weekly emails announcing the Friday Freebies and other specials. Whoever designed the parking lot wasn't thinking. The layout sucks. The grocery pick up only has 3 designated spots. We love Mariano's meat department. But, unfortunately this time we were let down. Bought some steaks to make yesterday and they were terrible. The filets were good. Tomahawk and NY strip were tuff and definitely not tender at all. Disappointed, especially paying the price we did for guaranteed tender. Yes, I know how to properly cook steak. Nice little market with lots of fresh produce and a large wine and beer selection. Small bakery and floral departments and great selection of frozen goods available. Friendly staff and cashiers who keep their lines moving at a respectable pace. I love this place because of the people who work there. First time I went, a sweet gal helped me look for something in the personal care aisle- very helpful and accommodating. In the same trip, the gal who checked me out was friendly and fast. The pricing seems to be based on Hi-Lo model. Prices are higher than some stores but their discounts are low and worth reviewing before you shop. The location makes this our primary grocery stop.
