Let me just say this people who work at Jewel are overworked and underpaid. However, Antonio in the deli has exceptional customer service! It was just a little bit of Caesar salad left, and he went out his way and didn't say we don't have any. He made a whole new pan. Thanks a bunch for going that extra mile! read more

When you go to self checkout make when they ask for charity donation that you punch in the amount you want to give or elect to give nothing. GHETTO! Each time I visited this Jewel I've had or witness a terrible experience. Who conducted the interviews? Well, in today's news, the 5 staff members behind the deli counter today (which was so disheveled) decided to take their time and while 2 ppl took one person's order the other 3 sat in the back playing and joking on each other. The one guy with the classes thought we came for a comedy show because he kept dropping everything and then say little snide jokes as the line of 3 reached to door. Because two staff members decided to take one person's order instead of helping the lady who stood in line 20 minutes it cause the two customers to feud. It's a shame THIS Jewel is like this unlike in other neighborhoods. The staff is unfriendly as well. Like they don't want to work, and this is the for deli counter. read more

This is not my favorite grocery store but it is largest grocery store within 5 minutes so I do frequent this place a lot. It is somewhat run down, the produce is usually on the verge of rotting and it is almost always busy (unless you go before close or late Sunday). At least they have all the essentials. The prices are regular, service is regular and the products are regular. I am giving it 3 stars because it is still standing and provides me with emergency groceries. Also, they have a parking lot. I guess this earns them a star as well :) read more

I consider this establishment the developmental league for the Bronzeville Post Office. Those who know, know. This grocery store is definitely in need of some ongoing employee training. Perhaps an overview of the job expectations and performance skills needed to perform job functions. A training program that provides a fundamental understanding of the position and how the position fits within the organizational structure. Other than that the staff customer skills are fine. The prices are not an enticing attribute; in fact, their nearby competitor proves to offer a better overall value. The quality of produce and meats is average, and the selection is limited. The ease of shopping fares no better; there always seems to be a bottleneck near the meat section and the checkout area resulting in a less than desirable shopping environment and atmosphere. Finally, a personal anecdote; I had completed the shopping obstacle course and had secured a spot in a long line at the check-out counter; I was the next in line when the lovely young lady decided NOW, she was closing her lane?! What, (light on signifying the lane is still open) with one other person behind me? Unbelievable! If that was not bad enough, I left that check-out line and went and found a place in another lane, only to have the checkout manager tell the person that was behind me in the previous lane that the cashier would finish the checkout with her. WTH?! I eventually checked myself out. I could not get out of there fast enough. I am sure you know how this ends...I won't be returning to this hell hole. I made my way back home...waiting for the mail that hasn't arrived for weeks. read more

This Jewel is terrible, but extremely convenient for me to get to. Items frequently are not marked with the sales price, and so I always try to have a copy of the sales ad when I shop and watch the scanner in case I am over charged. I think all of the employees are generally nice and helpful, but every issue takes multiple people and lots of time to solve. read more

I loathe this Jewel-Osco location. Every time I have enter this store I have to look for a shopping cart or basket. The shopping carts are always filthy with trash in them. The shopping carts are right by the door which normally causes congestion by the door. There is a limited fresh organic produce available. I would go on a limb and say there are more bakery goods than produce available at this location. Sometimes you will find store employees roaming around that will offer help, most of the time they do not. Pretty much you may have to ask a fellow shopper for some assistance. I can never find a manager on the floor assisting the customers. By the way who is the store manager? Let's talk about the lengthy check out. I have never been in this location where the checkout lines were short. The customer service from the cashiers is subpar. On occasion you may have a store employee bagging your grocery's. The prices at this grocery store are a little bit on the pricey side. This location is convenient to members in the community which provides the necessary staples. If you would like a crazy chaotic flea market experience please be my guest. Although this Jewel-Osco location has made some massive changes, it is not enough. Which is exactly the reason why I gave this location 2 stars. read more

I've moved to this area recently. I have been here twice. I usually go to Mariano's but I have no complaints about this store. Everything is very clean and very presentable. The staff is decent. I love the produce section and the bakery and deli looks good I just have not gotten anything from the deli or bakery yet. This is a very high traffic area and security is high in the area so be safe but I love the area I live in. If you live in this area you are used to it as I am. read more

Them little young girls always have an attitude. They are rude. Nasty and always have a dirty look about them. You can never get any help around the store. It sucks because this is my neighborhood store. Hate it. read more

This store has some of the most unprofessional employees in the network. I stood at the unattended butcher's counter for five minutes before anyone showed up. The responsible party was a mere 10 feet away before she noticed that I was waiting to be helped. There was no acknowledgement of the long wait time nor any sense of urgency when taking my order. I'm likely to go to another grocer from this point forward. The sad thing is that I worked for this organization and know that they can do a much better job. read more

It's the closest Jewel around me. I usually walk here with someone versus on my own. I wouldn't recommend going by yourself walking or driving there. Area doesn't seem the most safest but safe enough. They sales on meat in the entrance which is helpful when your on a budget. I haven't used any of the bread, deli, meat or seafood area for services yet. I only interacted with some of the staff. Some are kind and freer you even though she may not know you. It depends on the days you go. I mainly come here for the sales on meat which are typically buy one get one free. They tend to have eggs on sale at a lower price than other Jewel which I noticed. They do have an Express line which is helpful. Not a bad place but not a luxury place so it can be a hit or miss depending on the day. read more

Old and tired, an extra star for them trying. Don't expect the best of anything here, and there's a good chance if corporate doesn't do an intervention they will close their doors soon because of that other new grocery store down the street, the one where you can sip wine, while shopping or grab a quick meal before shopping. No oyster bar, BBQ, or salad bar here. This place is stuck in the 70s and not in a groovy way. So why am I even here? Well being the good wife that I am, (lol) my husband said he wanted baked clams, I said we can make them. His reply was not to go through the trouble and pick up some of those frozen ones, he said that would take care of his craving. Well guess what, that other new & shiny store doesn't carry them, and TJ's used to but discontinued them. So I did an online search and Matlaw's came up with being carried at Jewel-Osco, so I went to check it out and much to my surprise they had them. So my purchase tonight, clams, cocktail sauce and mustard, mustard because we're out and it's an item that doesn't spoil. I looked over the meat, and some of it looked scary, and as I walked past the fish counter that almost knocked me out upon approach. I recall a friend of mine in the neighborhood telling me about some fresh cranberries she bought for thanksgiving and after close inspection they found mold. So the best rule of thumb here, don't buy any produce or anything from behind the counter. Milk, yogurt and things sealed with dates are fine. Canned and boxed goods are probably fine too, I didn't really look as I don't buy much from the center of the store. For me this may as well be one of those tiny corner convenience stores that you buy a few items form. Hey Jewel corporate, stand up and compete! Really, you did have some shoppers there, looks like you're waving the white flag to me. Shop with caution. read more

Others have mainly complained about staff problems, so I'll address those first. In short, yes. Their baggers are slow and some don't have common bagging sense. It sometimes takes longer than necessary to solve problems. And the lines can get crazy - but that's management's fault. The employees are nice, especially the guys who do inventory. They've always been really helpful and polite when I've asked them to check on something. Aside from Hyde Park Produce this is the closest grocery store to me that is half-decent (sorry, Treasure Island on 55th, but your customers are some of the rudest people I've ever encountered, and your prices and selection kinda suck). Anyway, I've never had a problem with sale prices coming up at checkout, and sometimes their produce sales even beat Hyde Park Produce. My main peeve about this Jewel is they don't always have the sale meat stocked up. I'll go in for the cheap chicken and won't find it anywhere, not in their sale cooler or the regular poultry section. I want to say this is management's fault again, but I don't know who handles the deliveries here. read more

I pretty much agree with a lot of what has been said. The good: The staff is very attentive and ready to assist while shopping, though sometimes too eager. The bad: The baggers are on the slow side, in both the task of bagging, and just moving from one spot to the next. Ex. You're power-walking to make it somewhere quickly and a big blockade of a family exits a store onto the busy sidewalk you're walking on. They then proceed to walk slowly in front of you in utter disregard and lack of consideration, so you then struggle to get past them but cannot and must bear it until the next cross street you encounter because they pretend not to understand you when you say excuse me...that feeling. Jewel is on the list of 12 worst grocery stores in the US of A for a reason, however. Their prices are ridic, and they don't usually carry a lot of what I personally like. At this particular location, although the store layout has undergone a pleasant remodeling, the butcher/food to-go/salad bar section still operates like a DMV utilizing the take a number system. Is line-cutting really that big of an issue? Speaking from the neighborhood citizen standpoint, this Jewel has come a long way and I am happy to see the advancements. Sentimentally monumental read more

I had mixed feelings about this Jewel. In terms of selection and prices the store offers almost everything you could expect from a grocery store. That's great because it's the best full service store in the area. The downside was the check out process due to staff not being in a hurry to move people through, but they got automatic check outs in a recent store refresh! If those are not your style and you are going for a quick trip use the check out at the camera / liquor desk. read more

Worst grocery store ever! Let's see...if you don't value your time and are willing to wait in line for 20 -30 minutes just to check out, this is the store for you. If you don't mind slick, wet floors jeopardizing your safety, shop here. And best of all, if poor customer service and nonchalant management are your cup of tea. head on over to this store! Complained to corporate about this store, never heard back. Guess their customers aren't important. That's cool...Amazon Prime Pantry delivers for free! read more

This Jewel is horrible. Its ok for grocery shopping for packaged goods but when it comes to anything freshly prepared i feel they are second rate. EVERYTHING tastes horrible, from the broccoli salad to the taco salad. They don't make their items like any other Jewel the city. I've come here plenty on times since it's the closest location to my house and I've never been happy with my purchase of fresh goods. Everything always seems to be old or taste old. It's just disgusting. Ive never written a review on a grocery store! Hopefully their managements looks at their reviews, something really needs to be changed. I have honestly started driving farther away from home to the Jewel location in the loop now for my freshly prepared items read more

This place makes me feel like I am in a movie with someone reviewing it on a DVD player in slow motion. I like how helpful they are but as soon as you get to the front of the store when you think your leaving and about to make it to wherever your going in a timely manner, forget it because you will be super later. I do not know if they train them slow so they feel they have to be slow or what, but it is very discouraging to get through with shopping as cumbersome as it can be and then its like trying to get through airport security, they either need to hire more cashiers, or teach the ones they have to put some pep in their step. read more

If I give negative stars I would. I've been shopping with Jewel for 10 years and have not had a complaint with customer service until this evening. I have been shopping at this location for a couple of years and the cashier Dyvette had the worst attitude I've ever experienced from anyone, anywhere. Where was she hired from? First of all, her disposition was less than welcoming. Instead of her asking how my day went she decided to ask me if I would be paying with a Link Card today. That is rude and unprofessional and I never had a Jewel cashier ask me that. She fed me some b.s line about it's a new policy when customers buy water because if you have a link card they take off the water tax. I'm sure she didn't ask not one white person buying water if they were paying with Link. I looked a little rough today but know that I spend at least $300 a month on groceries at Jewel and never not once used a link card and I buy water all the time. I'm pissed because she smirked it off as it meant nothing when I asked her when did this policy change. She murmured to another associate that ' let em know through the doe' I Don't know who she was talking about or what the hell she was talking about but she picked the wrong customer today. The lady assistant mangaer seemed appalled by my experience but the male manager who came over seemed to care less. Just in case your company thinks its ok to ask Black customers if they are using Link cards.... It's not. Do better. read more

I wanted to give zero stars. I was in the area visiting a friend. I saw this Jewel Osco and decided to grab a few items ( meat and other products ). I went over to the meat section. As I inspected the meat, what caught my eye was a used and bloody / cotton ball band-aid ! The band- aid was nestled down in between the rows of meat ! After, literally gagging and in disbelief , I went over to a store employee ( who was working in the meat department ). He was in the middle of trying to obtain some woman's telephone number, but I thought a bloody band- aid in the meat was a bit more important than his love life. He came over looked at the band-aid . He stated he would "take care of it" ... well, after 15 minutes , the bloody band-aid was still there. I went and reported it to the store manger. Of course, I did not purchase anything from this Jewel Osco. I had to post this review.. any body fluids around food should be addressed immediately !! Gross and a dangerous health hazard. If you take the chance to shop here... watch out for bloody band-aids in your food ! read more

This is literally the crappiest Jewel I've ever been to. The only reason I ever go back is that I work 4 blocks away and when I forget my lunch I'd rather buy groceries than Fast Food. There are never enough check out lines open, and everyone moves incredibly slow. It can take my entire lunch hour to get through this place. There are usually at least 4 employees just standing around at the front of the store, nto bagging, or checking, or anything, just standing. read more

Just had a disappointing experience in this location. Woman in front of me she and I were the only customers in line, and she kept having to return items, going back to look for replacement items. So I asked cashier if I had to wait for this process or could she ring me out since I only had 5 items and she said she couldn't. I approached manager about issue and she suggest I come and wait in her long line. Really! Unacceptable! Is that how you handle the matter? I didn't buy anything from there. There are not enough words in the English language to express just how terrible this place is. The only thing that saves it is the fact that there really isn't any close competition. The staff is slow and about everything BUT their job. The manager walks around like someone handed him a raw deal. He doesn't greet the customers and is slow to respond to problems. The convenience of this place is great, but the quality is sub-par. Place just doesn't have the lust of other Jewels I've been to. The produce section is small and limited and it is not the freshest. My review of this grocery store is long overdue. I frequent this Jewel Osco at least once a week. Without exaggeration, almost 100% of the time the lines are long and you have to wait at least 20 minutes to check out. They NEVER have enough cashiers on duty!! For the cost of the items, many of which are overpriced, the long lines and wait times are unacceptable. It is unfortunate that this is my local grocery store. They're building a Mariano's nearby, and once that opens up I will not to go to this Jewel again. read more

I agree with Lauren. Sometimes the lines are 30-45 minutes long and they should hire more people and get self check out lanes, but the employees on the floor are extremely helpful, especially Aaron in produce. OMG, this place is horrible. How Jewel allows their name to be associated w/ this place is beyond me. There is a dollar general in the southside that is classier than this place. Go once and then please call Jewel to complain. It has parking and it .6 miles closer than the Target on Roosevelt. I'm new to Chicago, so like an idiot I went. BIG mistake. The customers are so rude and violent that the staff is scared to ask them to obey basic rules, like getting in line and not yelling at the top of their lungs. There is never a manager when these classless people act up. Security is a person who wears an orange vest, not a person who does the job of a security person. They will watch these people behave this way and actually do nothing - except continue with their own personal conversation. The store acts like making it like other Jewels is a task on par with developing a country. I swear I could do a better job, but I'd rather be a physician than a Jewel Manager. I'm not going to complain about how dirty it is - I would never buy anything fresh from there anyway, so I didn't even look at the produce aisles. But it is on the way to the beach, Lake Shore dr. Running in for some paper towels or ice cream, beer on a holiday weekend is idiotic. Prices were great, but waiting in the express line behind an obese woman with 40 items, who was using these paper food vouchers took more than 10 minutes. The cashier said she was too afraid to tell the woman to get out of the express line and the woman got angry when she heard us discussing this. She told me it was none of my business, even though I never spoke to her, I just asked the cashier if this was an express line. This was my fifth visit, and the least abusive customer I have experienced. I cant post the other experiences because yelp will pull the review bc I cant do it in a PC way. I feel badly for that community. Its like Jewel doesn't think those people deserve any decent kind of store. I will just drive a little further and shop where the less scary customers are and where the poor staff is not afraid to do their jobs. read more

The worst Jewel I've ever shopped in. Just moved back to the Grand Boulevard area and needed groceries the day before Super Bowl and the day before the start of a huge snow storm. Stopped by the deli for cold cuts, grilled chicken and chicken wings, unfortunately no chicken was prepared for sale' what was in the warmer looked hours old. About 10-12 customers were just waiting while the three employees behind the counter were moving like they were in comas. You would think the store would be prepared for Super Bowl party shoppers and shoppers trying to buy supplies before a big snow. I finally gave up waiting and headed for the checkout. There were about 4 checkout lines open in addition to the self help checkouts.
