The reason I couldn't give this place 5 stars was because we have never felt so uncomfortable as we were the whole time there. At first it just seemed like an outdated local cafe. However the waitress stuck us back into a little room behind an obviously very dirty curtain and called it a "penthouse." I think the shr thought it would contain the kids but honestly it felt more like a weird dirty closet. It had dirty very old toys shoved in it so that you could barely get to the table and a pull cord light. It made us feel SO uncomfortable. Apparently she thought she was doing us a favor but we probably won't be back purely based on the severe uncomfortable factor and dirty atmosphere.

Duck, quail, rabbit, steak, and so much more. The menu was incredibly impressive. However, breakfast was delightful. We had an omelet made with fresh vegetables from their garden, French toast, a chocolate croissant, an almond butter croissant, herbal tea, and fresh cold-pressed grape juice. Everything tasted incredibly fresh. On our way out, we even picked up some tomatoes and carrots from the farm table. 10/10 on everything. Beautiful farm-to-table food, fresh ingredients, and wonderful service--all served by nuns! It really doesn't get much better than that. We'll definitely make a point of coming back for dinner next time.

A full buffet lunch with multiple meats, multiple salads and three different soups for $7.99 - which includes the drink. Wow. That feels like something from the 1990s. But it's 2018 and Dave's is a throwback to the time when gravies were made from pan drippings - not out of a can or a bag. The gravy was so good that I asked about it and that's when I found out it was still being done the old fashioned way. Double WOW. The salads were also top notch as were the soups. So great to find a restaurant gem like this when you least expect it. If you've not been to Dave's - you're really missing out. And their hot beef plate with that homemade beef gravy is WELL worth the effort to visit Charles City. Highly recommended. We're BIG fans. I will say it for the third time - WOW.

Every single time we've been there, we wait a minimum of 10 minutes before we are offered drinks. Today we had to actually get up to find someone to give our drink order to! We are left waiting Every. Single. Time. Food is mediocre. The breakfast buffet is equal to the free continental breakfast at a hotel... You know the stuff that is microwaved & processed, not homemade. We are very forgiving on service as nobody is perfect & everyone has a bad day. The restaurant is clean. Today was the breaking point for us. We will go to Floyd or New Hampton for breakfast from now on. Dave's is definitely not worth my time or money.

Our waiter was a sweet young kid, making money on his summer break and was so kind! Two in our group got the cod Friday fish and chip special and they talked about how good it was! However, they didn't have malt vinegar. One thing about this place, they have big portions! I shared the Cajun chicken pasta which I forgot a picture of but it was so good and creamy but also just so much food! I also got the French onion soup. The onions were cooked perfectly and the cheesy was so melty and stringy, so it was perfect! Some of the menu items come with salad bar which wasn't too desirable as there were limited options and we got there later, but it was alright. My only other thing we noticed was that we were sat in the back and some of the lights were not used or burnt out so it was a good bit darker at our table and hard to see the menus. I'd probably give it a 4.5 if it were an option. But hey, small town grill, overall it was a great spot to get a bite to eat while we were visiting.
