My husband and I took a road trip from Auckland to Rotorua NZ. It was cold and raining, we were Americans driving on the opposite side of the street, I didnt wanna waste data so we were listening to the same Drake song over and over offline on my Spotify... needless to say when we finally reached Rotorua all we wanted to do was find something good to eat. Not a lot of people write reviews on Yelp for Rotorua restaurants, so we were on our own.
We pulled up to Jesters and I had no idea what kind of food it would serve but it was sandwiched between a Subway and a BBQ restaurant, so in an effort to try something we couldn't find in the States, we went in.
Jesters serves literally any type of meal you can think of stuffed in a flaky pie. I came to learn this is a huge thing in New Zealand anyway, but of all the ones that I tasted during our stay, Jesters had the best. I ordered their Salmon pie and it was PERFECT. Flaky, (crispy? I don't know if thats the best way to describe it) croissant like crust filled with salmon, spinach, and a florentine sauce. SO GOOD. Never thought I would say that about a pie stuffed with Salmon.
I can't remember what my husband ordered, but he devoured his too. You can order a side of fries, but you don't need to... these are definitely filling on their own.
It's a little bit of a ways from the main area of restaurants in Rotorua but it's worth the extra 5 minute drive and it is a lot less pricey. read more
