This place was definitely a hidden (well not soooo hidden) gem! Located almost directly across from the Matamata I-site center, you really can't miss it. I have to admit, I didn't have time to find a place to eat in matamata while we waited for our bus to Hobbiton so it was just by chance we decided to give this place a try. Very cute seating area outside and we were going to sit out there but Leo (aweeeesome server!!!) told us there might be a lot of flies out there. So we opted to sit inside instead, thank you Leo! If there's one thing I hate, it's swatting away at flies while trying to eat a meal! We decided to order a few things and just share. My son ordered the kids pizza and my husband and I ordered the Buddha bowl and the Eowyns blessing pizza. The Buddha bowl was sooooooooooooo good. You have to get this if you're looking for a healthier option. It was beautiful and colorful and tasty. And let me tell you, the coconut rice is to diiiiiiieeee for. Best coconut rice I've had. Service was wonderful and our food came out pretty quick. We were ready to enjoy hobbiton on a happy stomach! If you're waiting for the hobbiton bus, make sure to stop in here to get a bite to eat before you go!

Very close to the tourist center (which looks like a hobbit house) and seems like a solid option for a sit down meal and drink here in Matamata. I tried a cider (good, a little sweet but still pretty light) and got the Buddha bowl. My boyfriend got the curry. I liked the Buddha bowl! Tasty broccolini and maple roasted kumara, half an avocado, beets, chicken, and rice. Was pretty refreshing! And they played happy birthday for 2 patrons while we were there on a Saturday. So obviously pretty festive.

We loved this place, the food was so incredible. We had a steak that was huge and cooked perfectly as well as a crispy pork dish. The stone bread side was perfection, and the fries were thick hand cut fries. I really liked the ambiance and our server was super nice. If I lived near here, I would make this my regular hangout!

The staff here is so friendly. We had Christina for our waitress tonight and she was absolutely amazing. She was very attentive, friendly and just amazing. The food was delicious, the atmosphere is awesome and the service was perfect. We chose this place after our B&B host recommended a handful of places. I had the ravioli which they make 100% from scratch. My husband had the cheeseburger and polenta fries which he said was delicious. My mum had the ribs which she devoured. The beer selection is fun...my hubby did the sampler and enjoyed all of them. If you're in the area, I would recommend this place.

We visited this pub/bar/eatery once for lunch and once for after-dinner drinks during our stay in Matamata. The lunch atmosphere is clean, cozy and welcoming. In my opinion, any menu that has Lord of the Rings inspired names is already off to a good start. We expected pub food and that's what we got. The fish and chips were average and the pizza I had was pretty good. It was a decent place for lunch - but don't go in expecting anything other than good, hearty pub food. When we returned in the evening, it felt like a local hang, and there was a rugby game on that gave it a more lively atmosphere. The bartender was friendly and chatty and we had a great time.

The food, service and beer were so good I added a place on yelp. Try the risotto. Sean was an amazing server.

Super cute restaurant and bar with food that's far from your average pub fare. Service was friendly, and it was nice sitting outside on the big wooden tables with fresh flowers on each. We tried the Radler fish & chips (chips swapped out for avocado & tomato salsa + coriander? No problem) plus the scallop salad. Both were fresh, delicious and we polished the lot off! Only criticism was that the scallop dish could have had more scallops. Highlight was the homemade tartare with crispy capers.

$15 Steak Night... with a side of egg. Yummy!!!

We had an amazing day traveling through New Zealand today and found an awesome place to stop for a few pictures and then an even better place that had a $15 Steak special that we couldn't pass up. A most definite stop in Matamata if your travels bring you this way. Enjoy!!!

This place is very overpriced, you can tell they just want to take advantage of tourists. The cocktail was so sweet I couldn't drink it. The pizza was really heavy and the cream cheese added on top was an odd addition. We ordered "Saurons fury" and cool as bro cocktail. My husband enjoyed the beer taster at least. We wouldn't return.

I simply ordered a two meat combo dinner for $16.50 NZD, and was pretty much satisfied. Being famished after visiting the Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton, I needed some meat! The manager welcomed us and served up some thick slices of roasted pork, with the appropriate salty crispy pig skin, and lamb. It sat on top of potatoes, pumpkin, and peas. Applesauce and a lemon glaze gravy on the side. Maybe it was a "so hungry, it tastes so damn good" feeling, but it wasn't. The meat was well roasted, some fatty, and tender. Probably seasoned only with salt, which was good enough to me. Items on the menu: ~ Roast Dinner Plates (beef, pork, chicken, lamb, or vegetarian). ~ Southern Fried Chicken Combos. Though I've seen better looking chicken elsewhere. ~ Rolls served up banh mi style, or meat in a regular sandwich. ~ Burgers with your choice of meat. ~ Fish and chips, hot dogs. ~ Milkshakes and cheese cake. Inside dining: ~ Nothing special, just a few tables. Normally, I'd give a place like this a three star rating, but with the little choices you have in the area I'm generously giving a fourth star. And with seeing people coming and going, it appears to be a hit with the locals.

It was open at the time I was in the area and it did look inviting. I perused the menu and decided to give it a try. Walking in I saw the old-fashioned furnishings, metal chairs, display cases, wall shelves, big bar in the middle all in a long and narrow room. Yessss, this looks lie something out of the 50s and I like it. After a long hard look at the menu I opted for the Salami platter... Strangely enough there wasn't salami, but more like a smoked ham, prosciutto like meat. It tasted great, so what's in a name. Delicious heirloom tomatoes, capers, salami impersonator, cream cheese, capers, pickles and your choice of bread. I had chosen crumpets and regretted that . Not because they weren't delicious, because they were so yummy, but they were also so buttery that I couldn't get the cream cheese to stick and everything I tried to put on the crumpet just slid right off them. I got the bottomless cup of coffee and I must say, this is really good coffee and the refills kept coming also. I love the atmosphere in here and there are so many great choices on the menu. If I ever come back tot Auckland, I will definitely stop by this place again.

We ordered a Lamb Shank, Pork Ribs, and a Custom Grill with 2 portions of beef and 2 portions of lamb. All food came out in about 15-20 minutes, which was a bit long but we had ordered close to their closing time. I appreciated that they didn't complain, but were smiling and happy. Never once did we feel like we were being rushed out. Everything we ordered was delicious and tender. The chips (fries) that came with some of our dishes were crispy and fresh. The salad that came with my custom grill was perfectly tossed together. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but the quality cannot be beat and the service was 5/5. The White Lady is a food truck serving a variety of burgers and sandwiches, as well as chips. There is no seating, so they offer take away only. I was a little uncomfortable, as there was a group of homeless people sitting and laying down right next to the food truck. Because of this, I just wanted to grab my food and go. The food took about 15 mins to finish and we were out of there. They did have tomato sauce, as well as garlic aoli sauce, free to take as much as you want. I ordered the White Lady, which is one of their signature burgers. It had a beef patties, Scotch steak, Colby cheese, bacon, fried egg, grilled pineapple, fried onions, lettuce, and tomato. It sounded like a ton of ingredients, but I figured I had to try their namesake burger. I had taken my food back to my hotel, which was only about a 10-15 minute walk back. Understandably, the burger was a bit soggy. That wasn't the worst part though. My main gripe with this burger though, was the Scotch steak. It was probably my fault for not entirely knowing what a Scotch steak was. The steak was chewy and I was NOT able to bite it off each time I took a bite of the burger. After a couple bites struggling to separate the steak from the rest of the burger, I ended up just taking the steak out and eating it with a fork and knife. I cannot understand why you would put something on a burger if it cannot be bitten off solely with your teeth. It goes against the point of having something handheld. On top of that, the steak was very bland. The burger patties itself was okay, nothing amazing. I come from the United States, the home of fatty foods and the best burgers, so maybe I just have high standards. For me, this place was a one and done just to see what the hype was about.
