A large part of Dr. Korman's practice is doing one specific procedure. She's one of the only doctors in the area who does them in large volume, so she is highly regarded as an expert at it. The problem is, she has become like a carpenter with a hammer, who sees only nails. If you take a preliminary screening test and get any result besides "completely perfect health," Korman tries to sign you up for her procedure, and then get you on a routine of regular repeats of the procedure. To my mind, it's a bit of a racket, especially since the preliminary screening test that puts you on this routine is, according to the medical literature, not very reliable. I left my first appointment with her skeptical, and sought out a more experienced doctor, who admitted that there is "no consensus" among physicians on how much one should rely on the screening test, and how useful Korman's procedure actually is--some doctors call it overkill; one has written that the procedure "brings expense, pain, and scarring with no cancer prevention." So, no: I'm not going back to Dr. Korman. read more
