I found DJ Short Change (Change Dem Productions) on Yelp and read through his reviews at the time - all 5 stars. I checked out his website to learn more about him, saw that he had experience doing corporate and private events so I decided to initiate contact. Despite being out of the country on vacation and on basically different time schedules initially, Short Change was quick to respond to get the conversation started and the basic questions answered. He indicated he was available for our event and immediately made us feel comfortable, assuring us that he had everything under control. Boy, did he deliver. Having given him such a short runway for planning and with everything else going on, there was bound to be some sort of hiccup that came up yet DJ Short Change navigated the evening professionally and everything was executed perfectly - if there was a hiccup, we couldn't tell. Short Change nailed the all of the "must have" songs, played great music overall and read the crowd well. He kept the party moving... so much so that I asked him to stay an additional hour as there was no way we'd be able to keep up the same vibe. Booking DJ Shortchange was the best event-related decision I made. He's a total professional--proactive with communication, able to roll with last minute changes, and supremely easy & pleasant to work with. Change served as party MC, keeping the energy up and directing folks to the food, Photo Booth and (of course) to the dance floor. While this cat can throw down any musical genre like a pro (you gotta check out his reggae shows), I needed 80s music running the gamut from heavy metal and punk to R&B and New Wave. Change happily took requests from my classmates leading up to the event and during the party and brought his own flavor to the party. So the one worry I didn't have on the night of the event was that the music would be totally Off. The. Hook. Change is more than a DJ. He's a one person Party Machine. If you are hosting an event and you need music, good music, across any genre, do yourself a favor and book this dude.

We ended up chatting with a few other DJs that albeit, had lower rates, but lacked the charm and professionalism, and um, maybe even "je ne sais quoi" that Shawn has :) . By far, he was the most seasoned and classy DJ that we met and we knew that we could trust him to run the overall emceeing of our special day. Not only did Shawn provide DJ services, but served as an overall "Wedding Entertainment Director" and master of ceremonies for our day as well as provided all the audio for the ceremony and reception. Our venue was Bridal Veil Lakes, which is all outdoors and can get a little complicated, but Shawn was a pro and had experience working there so he was able to suggest the optimal placement of everything. He even set up a LCD tv to project a slideshow that the groom's father had put together, and had it running with no issues. We also had an orchestra, several speeches, and he made sure that everyone had their microphones and could be clearly heard. It also really helped that he's worked with our day-of-coordinator before, so having vendors that have a great working relationship and can coordinate smoothly is so so important. Leading up to the wedding, we were able to select our wedding playlist and the songs we wanted for the newlywed entrance, cake cutting, and dance floor. It was awesome that he had such a diverse playlist of songs (from 90's hip hop to EDM to latin music and even the "West Wing" theme for our entrance). He was able to shorten our first dance song to our desired timeframe and smoothly gather the crowd for the various events. At several points in the wedding, we were running a little behind but you couldn't tell because Shawn did such a great job in communicating with the guests and keeping everything running smoothly. The most special part of the wedding was when Shawn played a last couples dance song for us, and had interspersed in the song snippets and sections from when we read our vows to each other in the ceremony - what a wonderful surprise that was, and we teared up! The guests even asked us afterwards whether we knew that was coming, and we didn't, so it was so awesome he put that together on the spot. If you want 5-star entertainment, you have to pay for it. 3) My wife and I never felt bored or awkward and there was never a moment where we noticed a lack of flow. The DJ's were on point at the ENTIRE night (ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception) with music, announcements, and fill-in entertainment that kept our guests on their toes. 4) We had 275 rowdy guests and Event Team handled it like champs. 5) If you need extras: up-lighting, TV's, projectors, etc.- they have it. 6) Our head DJ, Shawn, never hesitated to take our requests for additions or subtractions to playlists, slideshows, etc.- and we made a LOT of them. He always made time to chat with us and even rescheduled a few times when other things popped up last minute. Communication from Spark the Night was exceptional. They always made sure to send us any important updates or details and their online forms and DJ system were so helpful when choosing songs! Although I'm sure he has a great sense of humor as other reviewers have noted, I did not appreciate being referred to as Good Golly Miss Molly at my daughters wedding.
