It was great! We had a team retreat and Jess was very friendly and accommodating for our dietary needs.

The kicker was when we realized we got a full fledged ant infestation in our RV. Luckily, I am as meticulous as a person can be, living on a brand new 35' class A w/ full kitchen while traveling across the U.S. on a food tour. Needless to say, I woke up horrified, so we made Walmart our 1st stop to pick-up foggers & traps after killing every one I could see with baby wipes, TP, paper towels & anything else I could find. My murderous rampage has me a little on edge & I am not happy about having to delay our trip while the fogger does its job & then waiting for it to clear. However, I'm just grateful it wasn't something else!!!! A flea market is held on-site every Saturday morning/afternoon. Less than 5 miles from some of Selma's historic attractions. A little noisy after dusk due to the wildlife (frogs, crickets & other night crawling non-mammals) in & around the site, but not RV AC, earplugs & your husbands snoring next to you wont drowned out. Also a group of horses just behind the site, which were not disruptive in any way. I40 is just behind the site, so truck noise begins to be apparent around 7 or 8am. All & all if not for the infestation & necessary aftermath I would have rated this place a 3 based on putting things in their proper perspective.

Jake is a historian and is passionate about Montgomery and the history not just of the Selma/Montgomery march but the Freedom Riders, Bloody Sunday and Turn Around Tuesday. He is very knowledgeable, pleasant and helpful. He answered our questions and encouraged us to ask more questions!

He was born and raised in the area and walked part of the way from Selma to Montgomery when he was a kid in 1965. He knows Montgomery inside and out. He showed us where he drank out of a 'colored only' water fountain when he was young, camp site #4, Rosa Parks home, and many other places that were not originally on my list of places to see. He has deep knowledge of the area and was able to answer all the questions I had. Being able to see the sites with someone who experienced them first hand was a great experience. He has a nice passenger van that is air conditioned and we would get out every once in a while to see things up close. He also does tours in Selma and Birmingham. Also, if you are considering visiting Selma I would definitely recommend taking a tour with him and he can point all the sites out along the way, including where he joined up with the march. I highly recommend Jake.

Have you ever looked for a postcard while in Montgomery? Well, they are far and few between! When I…read morearrived on a Sunday, I went to Walmart and Target, and to my dismay, no postcards. On Yelp, I saw a souvenir shop listed, Tours of Montgomery. But it wasn't open until Tuesday. I continued to look and am so happy I didn't find any postcards on Sunday or Monday, because the experience of going to Tours of Montgomery on Tuesday was priceless! We pulled into the parking area for the store (which is in the front), and as we walked up, I said, "Even the outside is adorable!" As you walk into the store, you are transported through the history of Montgomery! From the moment we arrived in the store, Ms. Valerie took care of us immediately, asking what we were looking for. When I mentioned postcards, she directed me to the various sections with postcards in a way that made it feel like I was buying something more valuable than a postcard! As she interacted with us, the conversation was natural. Her shop was a Tour of Montgomery with shirts, statues, prints, paintings, magnets, and so much more that covered every aspect of history in Montgomery! Then we talked about the neighborhood that the store is in. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. walked down the road in front of the corner where the store is, across the street is the hotel where Billy Holiday played on the top floor, down the street, the first black theater, and in the other direction, the first black grocery store. All of the history was in one location, but even more special was that Ms. Valerie took the time to explain it all to my friend and me, who had stopped in for a postcard. She showed so much love for us in that 45 minutes that I would have stayed hours if allowed. If you are ever in Montgomery and want to experience a piece of Montgomery history or just purchase a postcard, this shop is the place to go. It's been one of my favorite experiences in Montgomery and Ms. Valerie will make it worth your time!

The gentleman that answered the phone said there was space and told us to try to be there before dark. We arrived at 6:30pm, which was after dark, and were told we couldn't camp because he had locked the gate. It would have been helpful if he had told me on the phone not to bother coming if we were going to be there 30 minutes after dark instead of saying "try to be here before dark". We are now in a hotel in Montgomery. Thanks a lot.

Luckily, we paid, and were then calling the phone number to get the code, when someone who was camping pulled up behind us and put the code in for us. The small road bridge leading from the main land to the island was a little scary for me. Good thing there wasn't a car coming the other way, or I would have freaked out even more. This land is wonderful. I could see the appeal to kayak, fish, or have a picnic here, or even camp here. We stopped at the bathrooms first, and they are clean and provide running water. On our drive to the town of Spectre, we ran into the goats. We were driving down the road and all of the goats were coming at us. We put the car in park and enjoyed the goats. One goat even jumped up on my door to say hello. They are fabulous and very friendly. When we exited the vehicle at the Spectre movie set, a super friendly goat was charging at me, I immediately went into the car and the goat approached my boyfriend. All the goat wanted was some pets. And that's what he got. They are like large dogs. There are swing benches around the lake and it is nice to sit and enjoy the scenery. Watch out for goat poop. That is the only bad thing. The goats keep the island well manicured and provide the best entertainment and are adorable.
