I called to make sure there was space to camp before riding 5 hours on a motorcycle with my son who was excited to see the goats and movie set. The gentleman that answered the phone said there was space and told us to try to be there before dark. We arrived at 6:30pm, which was after dark, and were told we couldn't camp because he had locked the gate. It would have been helpful if he had told me on the phone not to bother coming if we were going to be there 30 minutes after dark instead of saying "try to be here before dark". We are now in a hotel in Montgomery. Thanks a lot. read more

Jackson Lake Island is amazing, especially if you are a fan of Tim Burton's Big Fish. You enter through a gate, and there is an entire process for paying and then obtaining the gate code. Luckily, we paid, and were then calling the phone number to get the code, when someone who was camping pulled up behind us and put the code in for us. The small road bridge leading from the main land to the island was a little scary for me. Good thing there wasn't a car coming the other way, or I would have freaked out even more. This land is wonderful. I could see the appeal to kayak, fish, or have a picnic here, or even camp here. We stopped at the bathrooms first, and they are clean and provide running water. On our drive to the town of Spectre, we ran into the goats. We were driving down the road and all of the goats were coming at us. We put the car in park and enjoyed the goats. One goat even jumped up on my door to say hello. They are fabulous and very friendly. When we exited the vehicle at the Spectre movie set, a super friendly goat was charging at me, I immediately went into the car and the goat approached my boyfriend. All the goat wanted was some pets. And that's what he got. They are like large dogs. There are swing benches around the lake and it is nice to sit and enjoy the scenery. Watch out for goat poop. That is the only bad thing. The goats keep the island well manicured and provide the best entertainment and are adorable. read more

Really nice island. Would be great for camping and many people do camp here. To access, you stop at the gate, full out an envelope, and put cash in it. It is on the honor system. Then you call the phone number provided and they will give you the code to the gate. Really scenic, peaceful island. Many goats live on the island and roam freely. It was fun to see all the goats and their babies. The island is also home to a former movie set from the movie Big Fish. Pretty cool to see it. read more

If you are a fan of "Big Fish", this stop to the imaginary town of Spectre is a fun one. While the set has been abandoned, the magical spirit is still there, along with the line for leaving your shoes behind. (It's not as easy as it looks). We saw loads of friendly goats that inhabit the island now, the campground, and several people fishing. It was a delightful pit stop along our travels. Also, watch the movie again before your stop, just for good measure. read more

Love this place! If you are looking for somewhere to go and spend a relaxing day, this is it! The scenery is beautiful, not to mention, the set of Big Fish is here. It's a cool little place to go if you are a fan of the movie, but even if you haven't seen it, still an awesome place to be. They have roaming goats that will just graze around you, some will come up to you. I sat my foldable chair by them and just enjoyed the view. They also have a few fishing spots as well. I did this as a day trip, and we plan on returning in the Spring. A lovely, quiet place with plenty of good picnic spots. read more

This is a nice island in Alabama surrounded by a lake. You pay a fee at the gate to open the gates and then you drive over a bridge to get to the island. It is currently 3 dollars per person, but the fee is going up to 5 a person this month. You need cash and exact change. The island is really nice and peaceful. You can even camp here. The main reason we came here was to see the town of "Spectre" aka the set of the movie Big Fish. If you like the movie, this is a must see. All the original buildings from Spectre have been left up along with two trees. This was so cool to see. There are also goats roaming around the island which was so much fun. Bring something to feed the goats if you want them to come over and hangout with you. read more

We were making our way to Montgomery, AL to visit family and I contacted one RV park on US 231 on the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 26 and the gentleman who answered the phone informed me they were closed. Not sure why, it was neither a Sunday or a holiday, but nonetheless, we needed a place for that evening in the Montgomery area, so I reached out to Jackson Lake Island. The gentleman who answered the phone was very cordial, and asked me a few questions (what type hookups, size camper, etc.). He said they had 3 sites available - two on the island and one on the ridge overlooking the island. He instructed me to call him when we arrived at the gatehouse. We arrived and contacted the man. He asked that we fill out an envelope with our information (name, tag number, etc.) and he would meet us and take us to see the available sites. He arrived and we followed him through the gate. He showed us the site on the ridge - it was full hookups but was pretty close to campers on either side. My wife wanted to look at the sites on the island. He took us to the Island to the full hookup site that was available. The third site was on the island, but it had no sewer hookup plus another camper had come in earlier that day and taken it. We choose the site on the island, which is the site where the movie Big Fish was filled and it still had some of the buildings there from the movie set. Also, there are about 50 goats that roam free on the island also. We have two dogs, but we always keep them on a leash, so that was not going to be a problem. We really enjoyed our stay. There is one issue(!) that campers need to be aware regarding the sewer hookup. As I was hooking up our black/gray tank hose, I noticed that there was toilet paper remnants around the sewer connection. I wasn't sure what had happened with the previous camper, until we were dumping as we prepared to depart 3 days later. It appears the septic system that you hook to was either a septic tank that was nearly full and field lines that were plugged or maybe because it had been raining earlier in the week, the field lines were saturated - nevertheless, when dumping, the sewer line would fill and then slowly go down. In fact, I was unable to dump our gray tanks due to the sewer line not draining. When unhooking our lines from the sewer connection, sewer water backed up onto the ground for a moment. THIS IS UNSANITARY and hopefully the owner will address. Otherwise, we had a wonderful stay. The location was convenient for us to visit with family in east Montgomery and the site was very peaceful. The old movie set was neat, as well, and there were a few visitors who came during the day to walk around the movie set and take pictures of the goats. We might stay again - I will probably talk to the owner about the sewer issue to make sure it has been addressed before we come back. All in all, it was a very neat experience and we would recommend - just be aware of the potential sewer issue. read more

Beautiful!! Visited this on a day trip from Wetumpka on our tour of the South. Walking through the movie set, petting the goats, and just spending some time chilling out was delightful. We noticed nice RV spots and fishing spots. Public restrooms at the picnic area provided convenience for folks wanting to spend the day. So glad we didn't miss this spot. read more

Caution Dog Owners: Growing up my family raised Guide Dogs for the Blind, I am certainly aware of how a Dog should act in public...that being said. We have frequented MANY Greenways, Public parks, restaurants etc full of families and small children that want to meet our 2 Lab puppies, now 8 months old. Elderly family members and children love our Lab's and we are frequently complimented on how sweet they are. For some reason, after an uneventful hour of walking the park with our dogs with a few barks here and there but nothing else to speak of, we were asked to leave for having "Vicious" dogs present. Our dogs have never even seen goats before because they are young, barked once but kept moving. We maintained the entire walk with dogs on harnesses and leashes, and steered clear of the goat herd. There was no lunging, growling, teeth baring of any kind the entire walk. They barked once or twice with the other dogs in the park, and paid no attention to the children in the Van parked next to us, whom we passed several times in the park. The owner for some reason, decided to drive up on us quietly having water by our truck, with HIS dog hanging out of the window and asked us to leave and threatened us with Trespassing while blocking our truck in. My dogs of course....at this point....barked incessantly because WHO does this? We are unclear on why we were asked to leave, but Forewarning......your dogs aren't allowed to act like dogs here while fully leashed and in your constant control. Evidently we aren't the first patrons to have issues this hateful owner of the property. read more

Doesn't take long to drive they the entire island! Easy to fish, play with the goats and walk the "town" movie set. Close off the Interstate, was a great place to stretch our legs and have a picnic lunch! read more

Came from Atl for other reasons . Never fished the Alabama river, didn't know what I'd be catching was hoping to catch my PB catfish but I forsure didn't think it'd be my first alligator gar! I really was targeting catfish ... but majority of my interactions were with alligator gar (which I thought at the time of most of my "skunks" were from turtles .. snapping turtles to be specific) ... with not having the right fishing gear/hooks and honestly no knowledge on the fish.. I'm super stoked I landed this.. I will definitely be back and a lot more prepared.. read more

Very cool place, all the birds on the dead trees in the water surrounding the lake is awesome. The little town of Spectre used in the move Big Fish is very interesting of course its not in the condition it was then but still very cool to see. There are goats being kept on the island that are very friendly. They have camping available, boating and fishing too. read more

DO NOT COME HERE, I have video of the owner screaming and cussing at us and being extremely aggressive towards me and a few of my friends, for something that we did not do, we had traveled from 3 hours away, we had made reservations to camp and went into the park for a little to check it out before going to a nearby store to buy some more camping supplies, we were told if we got back before sunset we would be fine to get back in, well we got back to the park an hour before sunset and was told they wouldn't let us in because the park was closing. After explaining that we already paid and were told earlier we would be fine, he reluctantly let us in. After parking and going into the lake for maybe 5 minutes the owner pulled up, got out of his truck, and began screaming and cussing at all of us very aggressively. He told us we had to leave because we were speeding and that he called the cops to have us trespassed. We were never speeding and I also have dashcam footage of the whole time I was there that also shows my speed the entire time. Not once were we speeding. We asked for a refund and he refused even though we paid to spend the night. It was too late to find another campsite and we were stranded 3 hours away from home. Treated horribly for absolutely no reason and left us stranded for an accusation of something we did not do. I do have proof to back up everything I'm saying. DO NOT COME HERE. read more
