There was trash everywhere, including used pads in the bathroom, and the bed sheets looked messy and unmade. I politely asked a housekeeping employee if the room could be cleaned while I was out working, and she seemed irritated and wa rude about the request. Things got even more frustrating later that night. I returned to the hotel around 1:30 a.m. after work, and my room key suddenly didn't work. When I went downstairs, the front desk employee told me I wasn't checked in and said there were no rooms available. I explained that I obviously had been checked in because I already had a key and all of my belongings were in the room. Eventually, she gave me another key and let me back in. Then the next morning, the manager knocked on my door asking who I was, which just added to the confusion and inconvenience. Also, just something to be aware of: it's an older building, so you can hear people walking around pretty clearly from the rooms above. That part didn't bother me personally, but it may bother lighter sleepers. For the price, I expected a much smoother and cleaner experience.

Admission is $5 and no need to reserve online. Walk in and the woman who leads the house museum gives an overview of Scott and Zelda and the house. The house itself has a few rooms with lots of artifacts from the authors. There also an art room of Zelda's work and one dedicated to Scottie, their only daughter. The top floor has two Airbnb rooms- one called Zelda and one Scott.

We camped at the Gunter Hill Campground in a Class B RV in late March, 2025. Administered by the…read moreU.S. Corps of Engineers, there is much to love about this campground. There are 142 camping sites, with those numbered 1-75 having been improved. Our site was waterfront on the backwaters of the Alabama River, which offered tranquil scenic views and entertainment as we watched boats pass. The setting was natural, with many trees. Our site was huge, with a long, flat, and paved pad. The site had a picnic table, and full hook-ups. As a federal campground, the prices ($30, with hookups) were reasonable, especially with a 50% discount ($15) for holders of the NPS Senior pass. The campground has a nice playground for the kids, and laundry facilities. Plus, it's in relatively close proximity to Montgomery. One point off on my rating for two reasons -- (1) the campground is across the street from the Montgomery Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, there was a race on the evening when we were there, and there was a lot of noise from the racetrack although it did end before our sleep time. Otherwise, the campground would've been very peaceful. (2) the showers/restrooms are centralized, and quite a trek from our site. We definitely recommend this campground, and would return if we visit Alabama again.

The park is quite clean, bushes are kept trimmed. Sites are extra wide and this year, we noticed new gravel has been added. Nice & level. The geese occupy the pond and they are fun to watch. There is a great, large dog run for pets. There is sooooo much to do nearby for tourism. Conveniently, . AW Shucks Oyster Bar is located within walking distant from our campsite. Casey, was working again this time. She is such a delightful young lady. We ordered beers and lunch. Cudo's to the Chef~ the Camp Stew with Hush Puppies is the BEST lunch !! We found Mike to be pretty flexible, he said we could arrive early at 10:00 but this time we pulled in at 11:30. He escorted us to our spot right away. Had an issue with the 50 amp electric, but Mike came right out and fixed it. Everything worked fine for our 3 day stay. They do close for lunch between 12:00-1:00, and the front office closes at 5:00... so keep that in mind with your travel times for arrival. If our travels take us North through Montgomery, AL next year...... we will stay here again !!

We found this cabin on VRBO and vacationed here twice, so far. Incredibly nice owners and a…read morebeautiful house. It's not right on the lake, but up on a hill above the owners' house. But that shouldn't be and hasn't been a problem. There's an included six-passenger golf cart to ride down the hill and back up (and I guess to ride anywhere else, although there's really nowhere else to go within golf cart range). The house itself is more than a cabin. It is three levels of wood-walled beauty, inside and out. The main floor has a remote-controlled gas fireplace, a smallish TV and sound system, and several recliners. There is a dinette table with seating for maybe 8 and a kitchen with an island. The main bedroom is here, with no en suite bathroom...you have to leave the master bedroom to pee. But it is a large bedroom with east- and south facing windows. The lake is to the north. Outside, towards the lake, there's a protected wooden deck with a bench and a very large patio table and chairs. A screen door leads out to the gas grill and front porch. Heading up, there is a loft with two twin-sized beds hanging from chains. I never slept in these, incredibly. There's a desk area at the top of the stairs, overlooking the main level and a small balcony that looks south. Nothing too exciting here. There's a stairwell on the main level down to the lower level that begins right outside of the door to the main level bathroom and bedroom. I was never drunk enough to accidentally tumble down it, but beware this navigational hazard. And if you are taller than maybe 6'0" (I'm 6'4" and had to duck quite a bit), you need to proceed with caution, as the 90-degree turn to the left halfway down has a low clearance. The downstairs has a large common area, with a couch, big TV, gaming console, and a kitchenette with fridge. There's also a bathroom with a cool glass block shower. A bedroom with double bunk beds has a utility room with a washer and dryer...these come in handy if you'll be here for more than a couple of days. Head outside on the bottom level and you'll find a pleasant area with a fire pit (and supplied and seasoned wood), a wooden deck with a picnic table, which is covered by the wooden deck of the main floor. A concrete walk curves around and up to the parking area and main floor porch. The main floor porch has some comfy, rustic, wooden rocking chairs that are ideal for sitting in, drinking coffee, and appreciating a quiet morning. This is also how you enter the cabin when you get here. Overall, our two stays here were great. We'll be back, at some point. If you are looking to visit the area, check it out. With the new owner improvements are possible; hopefully. As the park is currently you get a site with working hookups and enough room to keep your truck attached to your trailer so it's good for the night. They have a handful of trailers here that have seen much, much better days. They are also very close (we walked) to Bass Pro and other businesses. It is unlikely we would stay here again.

Have you ever looked for a postcard while in Montgomery? Well, they are far and few between! When I…read morearrived on a Sunday, I went to Walmart and Target, and to my dismay, no postcards. On Yelp, I saw a souvenir shop listed, Tours of Montgomery. But it wasn't open until Tuesday. I continued to look and am so happy I didn't find any postcards on Sunday or Monday, because the experience of going to Tours of Montgomery on Tuesday was priceless! We pulled into the parking area for the store (which is in the front), and as we walked up, I said, "Even the outside is adorable!" As you walk into the store, you are transported through the history of Montgomery! From the moment we arrived in the store, Ms. Valerie took care of us immediately, asking what we were looking for. When I mentioned postcards, she directed me to the various sections with postcards in a way that made it feel like I was buying something more valuable than a postcard! As she interacted with us, the conversation was natural. Her shop was a Tour of Montgomery with shirts, statues, prints, paintings, magnets, and so much more that covered every aspect of history in Montgomery! Then we talked about the neighborhood that the store is in. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. walked down the road in front of the corner where the store is, across the street is the hotel where Billy Holiday played on the top floor, down the street, the first black theater, and in the other direction, the first black grocery store. All of the history was in one location, but even more special was that Ms. Valerie took the time to explain it all to my friend and me, who had stopped in for a postcard. She showed so much love for us in that 45 minutes that I would have stayed hours if allowed. If you are ever in Montgomery and want to experience a piece of Montgomery history or just purchase a postcard, this shop is the place to go. It's been one of my favorite experiences in Montgomery and Ms. Valerie will make it worth your time!

If you've ever seen the movie Big Fish, this is the site of the movie set ruins. While a fire took…read moresome of the buildings a few years ago, there are several still intact. It's located on a small private island in Alabama and is inhabited by friendly goats that you can pet and feed (goat appropriate food that wouldn't upset their digestive system of course). The cost is 5.00 just to visit. You can either pay with cash in an envelope or use a QR code. You then call a phone number and they give you the gate code. They do keep track of license plates, so don't cheat! You can also pay more to camp, and I think this would be a fantastic time! Lots of nice shady places and trees covered in moss, and of course the goats! Great getaway.

You can't go on the buildings and there are signs posted saying it is unsafe. But you can walk down the street and see everything close up. We really liked the movie so we really liked seeing the set. Very cool.
