Jake is the owner of Montgomery Tours and the one who will be taking you on the tour. We took a tour in Montgomery and it was fantastic. He was born and raised in the area and walked part of the way from Selma to Montgomery when he was a kid in 1965. He knows Montgomery inside and out. He showed us where he drank out of a 'colored only' water fountain when he was young, camp site #4, Rosa Parks home, and many other places that were not originally on my list of places to see. He has deep knowledge of the area and was able to answer all the questions I had. Being able to see the sites with someone who experienced them first hand was a great experience. He has a nice passenger van that is air conditioned and we would get out every once in a while to see things up close. He also does tours in Selma and Birmingham. Also, if you are considering visiting Selma I would definitely recommend taking a tour with him and he can point all the sites out along the way, including where he joined up with the march. Mr. Jake Williams, owner, led our tour. Mr Williams sweet spot is area history of segregation and the civil rights movement, with history of slavery and the Confederacy for context, although he'll be happy to show you Hank Williams, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and other sites too. The tour was a little long, at three hours. Mr. Williams experience growing up in the area under Jim Crow and participating in the march for voting rights, adds a first-hand perspective we valued. Highlights were stories I had not heard before about how word of the Montgomery Bus protest was spread. Jake delivers a wonderful retelling of a very painful chapter in American history. His personal experience and family history in Montgomery make his stories all the more relevant, and bring history to life for those of us who have only read about these awful events in our history books. We have two school-age children, both of whom loved the personal touch and the rich information delivered as only one who has lived through these stories can tell them.
