I don't know if I'm lucky or unlucky in not knowing about this spot when I lived in the Old Market…read more I stumbled upon a TikTok of a girl getting what looked to be the sandwich of my dreams, and I was surprised to find out it came from a little deli next to La Buvette, one of my favorite spots in the Old Market. My husband and I were downtown for lunch, and I knew I had to stop by. The menu is VERY limited; there are only two to three sandwiches everyday and a few soups. I decided to order the mozzarella, tomatoes, arugula, and balsamic sandwich and he tried the mortadella with dijon. My sandwich came cold and his was hot, but both were served on the most delicious focaccia bread with flaky sea salt. I was in heaven. There is very limited seating, but the shop as a whole was very cute. There are some specialty meats, cheeses, drinks, and other food goods available for purchase, too. Everyone working was very kind and helpful. This is a must visit if you are a sandwich lover!

THIS is where you come to buy the AMAZING sourdough bread that they serve there. I was at an art event once featured a prominent German photographer. During his gallery talk, he jubilantly exclaimed that he LOVES coming to Omaha, that the Buvette sourdough is THE BEST in the WORLD! I agree. And the really great thing is that they will make amazing sandwiches from it. There is a chalkboard menu listing their sandwiches each day. There are usually 3 different rotating choices. It is enough, I usually have trouble deciding which one to get even with that small menu. The flavors are amazing and the ingredients are fresh and high-quality. I'm going to say that these might be the best sandwiches in the world. Most of the sandwiches are made on this AMAZING house-made focaccia bread. Literally the only thing that makes me sad here is that sometimes they run out of focaccia and ask if they can make it using baguette instead. Their baguettes are amazing as well but personally I don't like them as sandwich bread. So in that event I usually get the soup instead. Their soups are delicious so it's not that big of a problem, Seating is very limited, with a tiny table inside and a couple outside, so you will probably have to find somewhere else to sit and enjoy your lunch, There are deli items, pickles and olives, desserts, and some specialty grocery items available, Staff there are lovely as well and I always feel happy when I visit. Oh, and this - you know how I said these are probably the best sandwiches in the world? One might expect these would be a premium price. I am delighted to tell you that $7.98 will get you one of these amazing things. They are large and satisfying. It is an incredibly good value. I come here often!

The pizza has a great traditional style with a flavorful sauce, plenty of cheese, and a crust that has a nice balance of crispness and chew. I noticed as I kept going he would be increasingly irritated. One day he finally told me to call ahead for deli orders. I called ahead and he quoted 3 hours for 1.5 lbs of meat. I wandered around then after 2 hours I thought this is ridiculous and called to cancel my order. Not long after I got about 10 missed called from the store...it was scary to be honest. I didn't even want to listen to the messages. I avoided going there for months but my son loves the fresh bread and meat so I went back. I didn't call because I didn't want to wait 3 hours. I'm sure he recognized me because another customer came in to order deli meat and he loudly said "IT'LL BE AWHILE BECAUSE THAT CUSTOMER DIDN'T CALL IN EITHER". I don't understand why he makes paying customers feel uncomfortable for ordering deli when there's literally a deli counter there. If you don't like it make prepackaged items to go, or get more staff. But don't take it out on the customer for doing something every other deli will do normally. I'm bummed to say I won't be coming here again. There's another deli out west called Casanovas where the owner is much nicer and doesn't mind slicing deli meat to order. It's worth the trip.

I felt like it looked better than the website!! Service was decent. Their menu is large and loaded with so many tasty looking options. Plenty of seating inside too. Definitely would come back!

We were told our food would take 15 minutes, which was fine. When our food came out, one of our meals was not made as ordered. It then took 25 minutes to make and bring out a grilled chicken sandwich with cheese. When my husband went to ask about the au jus sauce for his French dip sandwich, the cook said "Did he ask for it?". My husband also had inquired about the status of the sandwich after 20 minutes, the cook said he was making it at that time. Aside from one other couple in the restaurant, it was empty. The food was good, the service could be MUCH improved. I understand that I don't know all of the to-go order situations, but I think we could have gone to many other establishments and got quicker service. Very disappointing, considering McAlister's was once a great place to eat.

We spoke with his daughter who now runs the store and she was so incredibly nice. Everything is made in-house and the love and care shows. We were just passing through but knew our next hotel had a bbq so we bought several varieties of sausage to try (fresh polish, smoked polish, garlic and fennel, german, hot dog plus some bacon, jerky and snack sticks). Our favorites? We loved both versions of the Polish sausage and the bacon....5 stars for those. 4.5 stars for the Italian fennel and garlic and 4-stars for the remaining items. If we lived here, we'd be regulars for sure. Apparently there is a huge festival that make all the sausage for. Its amazing that they hand make all those sausages for this festival. What a treat! If I am ever in town when that is happening, I am going! Sorry I don't recall the name of the festival. I had planned on taking pictures of the grilled sausages but I forgot until after I cut them up. The next day I cooked up the remaining sausage and completely forgot to take pics. Star Deli is tucked away in Benson, and is open a bit later than other restaurants at all to cater to the scene of the strip. As a vegetarian, I greatly appreciate their entire list of veggie options, which allows me to feel unlimited in my options - unlike traditional sandwich shops that may have 1-2 veggie options. Star Deli uses creativity to cater to all types of sandwich desires! I tried the Jalapeño Popper this visit, switching it up from my traditional sweet potato sandwich order. As you can see from the photos, there was no skimping on my jalapeños, and they were crunchy and fresh! Not very spicy, but that is not something they can control without taking a bite of each pepper lol. This sandwich was flavorful and unique, and I would definitely order it again. The only worker quickly got 'cookin' once myself and one other customer ordered, delivering timely service without the rushed chaos of fast food as I saw him freshly chopping up the veggies. The local artwork on the walls and the location being in Benson, Star Deli is one of my favorite sandwich spots. A block away from a vintage store from the left and the right, bars nearby, coffeeshops, shopping, and ice cream, it really is prime for the day or night! I recommend the Jalapeño Popper, but with such a large menu, I will probably try something new next time, and so should you :)
