I've been coming here for several years and have zero complaints. Leslie is a miracle worker, and she's a delight to talk to. Front desk staff have been kind and prompt to questions. I've always had a good hair cut, and if I need something adjusted, as long as I come back within a week or so it's no problem. Some people complain about the price, but knowing how much this kind of training costs? The pricing is totally reasonable. I've been going to this salon for YEARS, and I always get my hair cut with the owner and usually it comes out amazing. This last time though, I was very disappointed. I asked for a layered cut, same as I've always asked for; but for some reason this time my hair came out all choppy and very very uneven. I noticed the owner was very distracted as she cut my hair, so that might have been why it came out the way it did. The front of my hair that's suppose to frame my face is so uneven that even my husband noticed, and he usually doesn't notice at all. The right side of my hair is way shorter than the left side. I guess all I can do is wait for it to grow out because at this point I'm too scared to go back or try to go somewhere else to get it evened out. I guess it might be time to try some place new. So I did an extensive research for a curly salon as I've been mostly curly for the past 6 years. I do blow out my hair maybe 4/6 times a year! I found this salon and thought wow I've found my gem!!! As much as my reluctant nervous self wanted to love it I didn't. When I left the salon I thought I loved it. The stylist took before and after pictures, and it looked divine under a ring light and right " placement" of each strand. I left in a hurry since my service took almost 6 hours. When I come home to natural light everyone is like what did you do? It looks the same. I didn't listen. I put my hair in a pineapple because I personally like to style my own hair with my products. My hair stood in a pineapple for a few days! As a mom of three I didn't find time! Once I did, I was sooooooooo disappointed in the outcome and realized why everyone was like wow you paid $370 for a full head of highlights and you barely have any in the back in middle (which is where I indicated where I hated the way my hair looked). If anyone wants the video of what the outcome of my "full head" or highlights looked like please send me a private message and I will happily send to you. Or even the full video of my straight hair showing all the unevenness and brassiness. I throughly documented the entire process as I initially thought I had my forever place.... After I styled and noticed no highlights in the back nor middle of my head I reached out to my stylist with video documentation and she said she would fix it. Comes the weekend the owner veronica gets in touch with me saying my stylist had COVID and she was going to do the adjustment. When I arrive I Try to explain I have no highlights and she tells me I do. I tell her look at my video I sent to her stylist she says no! you do have highlights and I will add what you want! She added the Highlights I wanted in the back. Was in her salon for 2 hours for the adjustment. I didn't want it styled as I had to pay another babysitter to do this adjustment. So I couldn't tell the outcome there. I trusted her years of expertise to have gotten it right. I leave with my wet top knot. I don't remove it for a few days! Finally, I decide to style, and the best way to see highlights and the work is to blow dry! I blew my hair out and omg! I was so disappointed in the work. I will add pictures. All my highlights were an inch or more from My crown and literally had no consistency to them. It literally looks like I needed a touch up! The half of the highlights she did (I had about 3 inches Of growth) were brassy and do not match (The previous highlights on the bottom that I had for a year)! $470 later they should've gotten it right. I wrote to the owner which was super nice in person. But has taken no accountability on her part but just blame me in her response. Blaming my nervousness And my high expectations. Putting me down because I blew out my hair when I'm 90% curly. But I do a damn good blow out! And it's the only way I see how my haircuts or colors look. Please be weary. I expressed my dissatisfaction and I was basically blamed!! No accountability whatsoever. We have a small business and We would never respond to our clients in such a demeaning and unaccountable way! But Gaslighting the client isn't it. $470 later I have to go somewhere else to fix this atrocity! Two visits and still wasn't enough to get it right. And veronica! I don't wear my hair straight most of the time! I only blow out when I want to see how cuts or color look. I didnt go straight to "blow frying" my hair immediately after your service. I deep conditioned and waited days!! Don't tell me I'm not a curly girl because i blew it out and showed you how bad the work was! The cut is always on point though I believe it's super pricey for a trim even if it just takes 5 minutes. Also I was so upset on my last visit the owner recommending a teenage customer and her mom to buy the devacurl products right after the lawsuit blew up and every curly girl I knew wouldn't go near their products. It's about profit always. They had started carrying inner sense products for folks who knew of the lawsuit and everyone else got deva curl and any scalp issues that came along with it. I would really have this be 4 1/2 stars but we don't have that as an option. It would be 5 if the price wasn't $85 for a trim. I have had nothing but horrible experiences from other salons but I was extremely please with this place. Stephanie did my hair and she did a WONDERFUL job. I've never been any play the specifically does curly hair so I was nervous going in and Stephanie quelled that quickly. Everyone there was incredibly pleasant and I intend on continuing to go back again. The price is my only issue. I understand they are dealing with curly hair which is complicated as it is and everyone's hair has a different pattern, texture, porosity, etc. But I don't make the kind of money at the moment to shell out $85 for a trim. I have to dip into my savings, which hurts. As I said, I'll continue to go because the experience and results are amazing and I am still very pleased. 4 1/2 stars from me! read more

I never have a preference for stylists or locations because truly everyone is so talented and do amazing work. I've had my first cut with Vida and my last two cuts with Naeemah. The entire staff is professional and friendly and stylists especially are very honest and knowledgeable. Everyone teaches you how to style and maintain your hair to get the most out of your curls and it's always a professional and pleasant experience. Rebekah was the one who cut my hair and she is so sweet and did more than I was expecting. She first cut of my hair and asked me about the usual hair products that I used. After cutting my hair in natural state she washed my hair which I was not expecting at all!! Most deva cuts that I've researched where I live at, wash and rinse is NOT included in the cut and I was beyond satisfied at this point that I'm Jersey Curl it was included. Obviously as usual after my hair was done, I was in shock that it was shorter than expected but I knew it was just the first shock of "omg what have I done?" cause I kept telling her to cut more hair!! I finally got a chance to get a curly cut from Jersey Curl after hearing about them from a friend for years. I moved out the state so Im rarely here to get an appointment but this time I did. I am so glad I made that appointment. They are super professional, and have a clear system on how they do the cuts. Its very organized and the wait seems super fast so you dont mind waiting at all. I had the chance to see Stephanie do other clients before me, so I pretty much knew what to expect when my turn came up. She was great, she asked what I wanted done, I showed her pictures and she did a quick consultation with me on her recommendation. I ended up taking her advice and Im glad I did. She walked me through the steps and told me what she was doing so I could do it at home too. The steps she did was cut it dry, put some Diva products in it, I think it was called "poo" and then she put me on this chair that lays back to wash my hair. This chair is so comfortable... it was such a nice relaxing wash because of that c hair. when she finished, she sat me in the chair then had me lean over my knees with soaking wet hair to put some product in it again and touched up the cut where needed. Next she sat me under the dryer for a bit and then when it was done. she had me lean over y knees again while she ran her fingers through it to loosen the curl and give it some volume. I went in for a trim and received a big haircut. I specifically asked to stay away from my bangs because I was growing them out and they were still cut. I've never cried after a hair appointment but I did after this one. My bangs are super short again but they do not realize that because the shrinkage is not the same when you're put under the dryer. Everyone was super nice, I am just extremely upset that I have to restart this whole growth process because what I wanted was not listened to. read more

TERRIBLE CUT. Short story: showed hairstylist the problem I have with my hair shape, she confirmed my hair was healthy, told her at most I was OK with losing 2 inches overall length. She chopped 5 inches off the bottom and didn't address the shaping issue I came for. Heat damage after my visit because all the hair stylists disappeared into the back and they forgot about me under the dryer (which was on much too high a temperature for my hair/scalp). I left an Instagram comment about how I didn't like how my haircut turned out and they deleted it. UNPROFESSIONAL, misleading to followers that every haircut turns out great. LONG STORY: Will never return to this salon or recommend to my many curly friends. I went in after following them on Instagram for a while, so i could see a bit of all the hairstylists handiwork. Even so, I brought in pictures of the general shape I'm looking for, but most importantly a picture of my hair that shows how dead it is in the back- that was my big focus since I wanted to keep my length. Before I even let her take scissors to my hair, I asked for consult. I questioned her multiple times about the condition of my hair (she said very healthy- in fact she was surprised to hear that my hair was freshly cleaned without even conditioner in it). We discussed how she wanted to even my hair out- before I agreed to that I asked how much hair did she intend to take off (because I don't mind the U shape). She told me 2 inches and I even had her show me in the mirror before she began. I wear glasses and had them off for the cut. While she was cutting I got the niggling sense that she was cutting way too fast to be sure of how much she was cutting, but I told myself she's a professional. By the time I put my glasses on to sneak a look in the mirror, it was too late. My hair was longer than my bra when I went in- at this point it was a 2 inches below my shoulders. At this point I starting feeling real dread but still tried to tell myself that it would be worth it in the end, that maybe I just wasn't seeing it right because of the cape, it would look longer styled, that Wendy was nice- she wouldn't ruin my hair. I even tried to bargain with myself- "OK, it's way shorter than you wanted- but isn't that like the hairdresser rule of thumb? This is a DRY CURLY CUT. It's a haircut from the curly gods- it'll be worth it in the end. You can sacrifice the length to them for the shape you've always wanted." Then when she came back she just started fluffing my hair out and cutting random areas- by then I knew it was going to be terrible. Then she styles it with their products even though I had already told her the product line doesn't work well with my hair- I had just come for the haircut. But she wants me to try it, ok whatever- I'm paying for it anyway right? She sits me under a dryer at a heat that is way too high for my strands/scalp it was so hot I was literally concerned about the clips she had put in my hair, burning my hair. Then literally every employee goes into the back (for lunch I guess). And they forget about me, I know I was forgotten because when she came back out she said "OH!" Anyway I get back to the chair for her to do finishing touches and it's just terrible. Super short compared to where I started, the stuff she used on my hair was heavy and greasy (which is ironic because the gel when I tried it left my hair dry) and my crown was ATROCIOUS- the ends were so greasy and the crown looked as if no attention had been paid to it at all. It had literally looked better when I came in. Messy, no product slept in hair looked better than $75 hair. But the women weren't stupid, they could tell i didn't like my hair. So as soon as I'm back in the chair they are ALL suddenly interested in me, saying how great my hair looks, so envious, blah blah. And here's the kicker- because she styled it differently than I do at home, I couldn't tell straight away if she had addressed the issue in the back of my head. I didn't think so, but I couldn't be sure until I washed the gunk out of my hair- and to be honest I was scared to because ringlets on my hair mean it's been stretched out. My normal curls are much tighter- tighter curls mean shorter length. The next day my hair looks worse, so I wash it out in the morning- BAM hair is officially above my shoulders. And look at that. the back of my head looks EXACTLY the same as it had before I went in. So I lost over 5 curly inches of hair for no reason. Because my issue hadn't even been addressed. My at-home trims produce better results than the supposed Deva certified hack job I recieved that day. A "normal" haircut at least gives me layers where I want them. A year of growth and struggle ended up on the floor of the salon that day. Best part- they told me their Instagram is only for POSITIVE COMMENTS. Mid-January I decided I needed to see someone about my hair. It's super curly and I'm protective of it so I wasn't going to see just anyone. After doing some homework I decided to check out Jersey Curl. The thing is, this wasn't your typical trim and style. This was going to be my FIRST EVER trim and style. I was equally nervous and excited. When I sat down Iris asked me what I was looking to do and if I had any styles in mind. We chatted about my curl type, what products I should stay away from (anything with sulfates), and how I can get the look I want. They use the Deva style cut here which basically means that my hair is cut dry and washed after. While she cut Iris explained what she was doing, how we were going to proceed, etc. She knew her stuff. After the cut, we washed. You guys, I totally get the joy of having your hair washed! Leaning back in that sink, having someone else wash your hair and massage your scalp is pretty damn heavenly! Deva products were used, which smell amazing by the way, total aromatherapy in the shower. She had me feel my hair post shampoo/conditioner and my hair was incredibly soft and silky. Then it was time for styling. We only used 3 products, and styled upside down, which I do occasionally. To give me volume at the crown, something I want more of, she added curl pins and then placed me under the dryer. The dryer... Sweet Jesus you guys, how do you do this!? It's like, reallyeffing hot. Okay, not lava hot, but I felt my face getting tight so I kept making weird scrunch faces because my face felt like a dried up river bed. When I walked out I felt amazing. And isn't that the whole point? My cut/style came to $88, including a large tip, which was way under what I was budgeting for so I was a very happy girl. I got my hair cut today for the first time in 6 (yes, SIX) years! I had a horrible cut at a regular salon that completely butchered my curls and refused to spend money to have someone ruin my hair again. So I put off cuts for a while and stuck to trimming my hair myself at home. I was so excited to find out this salon existed since it's a fair bit cheaper and much more convenient than going to Deva Chan in Manhattan. They ask that you come in with your hair as natural as possibly so I just washed the night before and went in, which is why it looks so wild in the before pics lol. I worked with Stephanie, who was great! She told me she would maintain my length and cut my hair so that I would still have the volume I normally liked. She explained every step of the process, including why they dry cut and how to wash, condition, style and dry my hair specific to my hair type (which is fine and somewhat textured/frizzy). They use only Deva Curl products and my stylist made recommendations on which products she thought would work best, but not once did anyone try to sell anything to me, which was so nice. Overall, I think my hair looks A LOT healthier and has a way better shape than it did before. It falls nicely and will hopefully grow out well too. If I didn't tell anyone they might not notice I got my hair cut, but that's kinda what I wanted. I got a "shape up" and I think it turned out great! This is my second and absolutely last time here. I wasn't sure what I wanted to get done and the stylist started snipping off. I kept an open mind, explained I had just washed my hair and didn't need another wash (as they request that you come with washed and de-tangled hair). The stylist was way too rough to the point that she was pulling my hair out of my head as she was cutting it. I asked to retain length and somehow lost half of my hair during this cut, my hair no longer fits in a bun and I absolutely have a helmet of curly mess that will take at least a month to grow out to be able to fit in a ponytail. Then she wet my hair, put conditioner on it and I was on my way. I wasn't even offered to get my hair dried ... It's a 45 degree windy day outside. All in all ...$85 plus tip for 15 mins for a choppy, bad cut. The hair is now dry and I going to have to have it fixed tomorrow at another place because this looks unacceptable. Came here for my first ever curly haircut. I was long overdue for a haircut so I was excited. I got a call to confirm, and a reminder to come with my hair dry, detangled, without product in its natural curly state. I did just that, however, I read that they will charge you extra if your hair is tangled. So I made a mistake and combed my hair right before going in the salon. The salon was small and cozy, cute decor. Seemed like the staff got along well and may have even grown up together (gathered this from the conversations happening). There was the most well behaved baby there which I was happy to see that children were allowed. I got there a little early, for an eleven o'clock appointment. My stylist took me a few minutes later, no bugs deal. Stephanie was my stylist and she was sweet and informative. She explained everything that she was going to do and what to expect. She asked many questions to understand my needs and wants, I was grateful for that. She gave me great tips and didn't force me to buy any products from the salon. I expected to have more of a drastic cut because it had been years since my last cu I was so pleased with my experience that I plan to take my daughter. read more

I am transitioning to my natural hair after years of relaxer. It's been six months since I last put some lye in my hair. After finally deciding on getting a devacut I set out to find a location where I wouldn't need to cross the river into nyc. I found this near by gem after a Google search for "curly hair salon" they are devachan certified. I had no issues scheduling an appointment at all. The salon is cute & very clean. The ladies are all very nice. my stylist Veronica was great answering all my questions and very giving with the information & tips on how to get the best curl out of my hair & how to keep it healthy. She know her curly hair. The young lady that washed & set my hair was also great (Her name began with an S...my apologies for not remembering) & continuously let me know what products she was using and its purpose. The price was very affordable & above all my hair looked great. I love my haircut & will be returning in 4-6 months as I was told to. I asked my stylist for a cut with many layers on top because my curls were flat on top and voluminous on the bottom, giving me that dreaded triangle shaped hair. This was not my first DevaCut, but my first time at this salon. It was recommended by a girl I work with; her hair always looked fantastic, though she did change salons after moving across the state. My hair is a curly mix: the longer it is, the straighter the roots get (thick and heavy), but the ends are always tight-ish curls. Depending on the weather, how I style, and literal daily luck, it could be frizzy, loose curls or tight, Deva-style ringlets. When I went in, my hair was well past my shoulders (past the middle of my back if pulled straight), but the ends were dry, my highlights had grown out, and it hadn't been cut in a long time. I wasn't expecting as drastic a cut as I got, but I took a breather, slept on it (literally--I napped when I got home), and ultimately am not unhappy. The price for my DevaCut and half head of highlights was fair and along the lines of other Deva-centric salons I've been to. In fact, I think it ran on the more affordable side, so props to them! SALON: 5 STARS The salon is small but runs like a well-oiled machine. I was taken on time, and everyone there was extremely friendly. You can tell how much the stylists love each other and cutting hair. It's definitely their passion. Street parking only; meters available and I think a municipal lot a couple of blocks away. Plenty of magazines to browse, free WiFi, and I was offered something to drink multiple times. STYLIST: 5 STARS Naeemah was my stylist and she was lovely! While I don't think I was clear enough about the length I wanted (I said shoulder length, assuming it would be cut slightly below my shoulder, while my resulting cut is barely grazing my shoulders), it is entirely on me; I should have been specific about how much my curls shrink. Since my hair looks different depending on the day and I couldn't style it before my cut, I think my curls hung a bit looser, therefore giving the impression that my hair would be longer after the cut. Regardless, she was friendly and kind, her daughter is adorable, and my highlights came out perfectly! THE CUT: I don't want to ding the salon on the cut I received, because like I said above, I should have been clearer about the length I wanted. I was stunned at the finished product; I haven't had hair this short (almost too short to put up; definitely too short to put in a bun) in probably a decade. I was kind of bummed when I left, but the hair was cut, so what could I do? I vented a bit to my boyfriend, angry at myself (again: NOT THE SALON'S FAULT), but honestly, once I got home and looked at it again, I realized it's actually pretty cute and, given how heavy and in-the-way my long hair was, a nice summer cut. I even got some compliments, which was nice; usually no one notices when it's cut. However, I think I'm coming to realize that the DevaCut might not be for me. Yes, I have curls. Yes, I love layers. But I've had this issue multiple times now where my hair ends up shorter than I'd like in the name of a DevaCut. The cutting style and short, choppy layers are just too drastic. My hair grows fairly fast, so we'll see how it grows out, but it may just be that I need a dry-ish cut with longer layers than a DevaCut offers. FINAL TAKEAWAY: Friendly salon, enthusiastic staff, and nice camaraderie among my fellow curlies! I hope I didn't seem unenthused or rude following my cut; I was surprised and a bit in shock. I really would like to go to JerseyCurl again because I did have a pleasant experience, but I think I'll have to request much less hair be taken off to accommodate for the Deva-style cut. I went with high hopes based on online reviews, and walked out with the worst haircut in recent memory. Either Wendy is not very well trained, or she was really not paying attention. I asked for collarbone length in front, slightly longer in back - she cut to just barely touching my shoulder, all the way around. Absolutely unflattering. The excuse was that my hair must have curled...Wait, isn't this place marketed as specializing in curly hair???? The rest of the cut is just iredeemably awkward layers. Truly horrible. I came into JCS, and I have very dark hair. Everyone thinks I colored it black. I have curls/waves, but they aren't noticeable because my hair is very dark. I came in to see Veronica the owner, to get blonde highlights. Maybe my curls would pop. I went to beauty school, so I'm very particular about my hair. I know what I want, and I know what I want to achieve, this is important when going to any salon. Veronica gave me a hair consult, and the color I wanted she gave me no promises that I would obtain it in one process (that's what professional colorist should always do and inform their clients). I respect that because a professional shouldn't"yes" a client to death, knowing that what the client is asking for is impossible. I appreciated that! Sometimes clients come into salons asking for the world, especially with color. So when she told me what I might get, I respected that. Instead of yessing me to death, which I hate! Wel, well, well Veronica added the color and the color was totally what I wanted, they glazed it to tone the highlights down. I was soooooooooo pleased with my cut and color. I've been to Deva Curl studios, and this one is the best. Many salons claim they do Deva Curl styling, but they don't practice it enough, and it shows. Also, Veronica had a practicing stylist under her Naima, who was very knowledgeable with Deva products and achieved the curls/waves I love. She was attentive, and I can tell she will soon be a curly master all around!!! I wish she could do my hair every time I wash it, but she showed me some tricks! I came in during back to school week; I swear I kept thinking, how I wish I were able to embrace my curls when I was a child, the way these kids did. I had to settle for blow drying and relaxers because no one knew how to deal with my wild curls. Which made me feel awful growing up! Curly girl problems in the 90s Now everyone is asking me how I got my curls! I've always had them; they just were too dark to notice! A little color never hurt anybody! Wow!! My daughters experience here was nothing short of Amazing!! This is her first Deva cut, this dry hair cutting technique is what she's needed in her life.
