Had my hair cut today by Katsuko. I was extremely impressed with the precautions the salon has taken to ensure safety in the time of COVID-19. I received a text the day before my appointment that asked if I had any recent symptoms consistent with coronavirus/if anyone in my household had symptoms. Additionally I was provided with instructions on the salon protocol. On calling the salon, I was instructed that I could enter, I was asked to sanitize my hands, and had my temperature checked. The salon is using disposable gowns and is limiting hairdrying inside the salon, therefore you're asked to show up having washed your own hair. The appointment was quick and everyone wore masks/maintained social distancing inside. The haircut is wonderful (only $65, cheaper than what I've paid for comparable haircuts in the past) and I could not have felt more comfortable with the experience. The location has plenty of parking in the parking lot behind the salon. Excuse the appearance of the area near the salon as there was a fire in a restaurant next door. I highly recommend this salon, they are going above and beyond to make sure their clients are safe. read more

This hair salon is clean and modernized and all the employees I've encountered so far have been nothing but nice and respectful. They are taking all the serious measures for the pandemic. APPOINTMENT ONLY. If you are a first timer, you will get texted to review and accept their Covid policy. In the text you will also get direction for parking in which they will direct you to a parking lot located behind the salon (pay by the hours). Upon arrival, you will get your hands sanitized and temperature checked. Instead of vinyl apron they will provide you with a disposable, clear rain coat to wear over your clothes for the haircut. My hair stylist is Hiroshi and I plan on requesting him whenever I need a cut. I love his hair cutting technique and precision. He has also colored my hair from a light bleached yellowish red to dark brown (almost black), just in time for the colder season. It was a process with many timers set for the bleached part, virgin hair, and the root. I was satisfied with my new, subtle look. Not to mention, he is a great conversation starter. I was looking for my new hair stylist and found this place. I saw the yelp reviews and they were mostly positive so I decided to try here. But my experience was disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I think the staff and Katsuko were very friendly and nice. But Katsuko's haircut technique was old and I could tell she has not learned new technique for years and it was very old school. Especially, the way she cut layers was not good and layered hairs of right and left side were uneven. Moreover, back hairs were not fully layered and she cut my hairs just on the shoulder so my hairs are always flipping out outside. I just simply don't like this result. I am Asian male looking for a new stylist in the area. It's very difficult to find someone that is able to cut Asian hair as it becomes very prickly at short lengths. Last time I came here was probably several years ago, and it was an older japanese fellow that cut my hair. He told me he specializes in women's haircut and not men. I told him do what he can since he was well reviewed. Needless to say I came out worse than I came in. It was like roof top on my head. My sides came down like roof shingles. Funny part, is that he told me it would grow out. Anyway, if you are an asian guy looking for a haircut I would stay away but otherwise they appear to do a great job on women's haircut. read more

It pains me to write this update but I went to Katsuko to get my normal cut, layers and trimming of bangs, and left furious to the point where I wanted to rip off my arm and beat myself with it. Then get run over by a car. The haircut was going to end as a great success until Katsuko started to cut my bangs. I specifically requested my bangs to be trimmed and angled but for some reason she got scissor happy and completely chopped them off. She cut them so short and uneven that they were impossible to fix. I was told that they would grow back in 1-2 weeks and to add salt to the wound, she said I looked like a little girl. That's really great for pedophiles but I'm not into that. I'm pretty sure she knew she fucked up my bangs but didn't apologize. I realize that my hair will eventually grow back and I'll semi look my age again, but unfortunately, I won't be making any future appointments here again. If you want your bangs trimmed, be very particular with your instructions. You may want to stress that you want a TRIM cuz you don't want to end up looking like a little girl. Maybe she'll get a kick out of that though, who knows. read more

My first time at Katsuko was my first time at any hair salon. I will definitely come back! Until going to Katsuko, I'd been settling for cheap haircuts from a local barber that I'd been going to for years. I like the barber as a person, but I was never really pleased with how he cut my hair - he'd cut inconsistently and always leave a few long spots of hair - after a few weeks, the cut would grow out and I'd be okay with it. I came to Katsuko hoping to get a haircut that I would love from day one. For me, that's a sort of messy cut, a cut that doesn't look very crisp. Toshi and I talked about that a little, and then he got to work. He's equally friendly and skilled. The cut he gave me is everything I wanted - my hair is significantly shorter, but it retains the look and feel of my hair after it had been growing out for months. I forgot to ask for her name, but shout out to the woman who washed my hair, too. It felt great. read more

My cut and color came out exactly how I pictured it. I had Toshi as my stylist; he was pretty quiet and skilled when cutting my hair. He pointed out how he has to shape it a certain way due to the way my hair natural waves up. I'm aware of this and only a handful of stylist point this out to me. So, I knew I was in good hands at that point. They don't push products on you but the cost of cut and color was higher than expected for a layered bob and a single process coloring, therefore four stars. The reviews are correct. Hiro is a master of hair. I received a smoothing treatment to take away the frizz. I like my hair in general, but when it is humid it is impossible to deal with. As I get older, I notice it is also getting drier. After one treatment, my hair is silky and smooth, even after a week of rainy, humid weather ! I am so pleased with the results. I have been here three times for haircuts, and most recently, for Japanese Straightening. Hiro is very skilled and detail-oriented. He takes time to ask relevant questions about my hair, and offers tips. All the haircuts have been satisfactory. I have frizzy, curly, short hair that always ended up too flat and over processed after Japanese Straightening at other salons. I go here once a year to get my hair permanently straightened and Katsuko is always available for me whenever I make an appointment and will literally spend ALL day with me (I have a LOT of hair-- frizzy, curly hair). Ever since I started going to Katsuko my life has changed for the better--I can now go on vacation and not have to worry about having a mop on the top of my head after leaving the beach! Katsuki is the sweetest woman ever and genuinely cares about her customers. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone she is incredible at what she does. Soo I just returned from Katsuko for the first time and I had Hiroshi, I have to say this was one of the best haircuts I've gotten also, not to mention he was one of the nicest people. Was completely fed up with NY prices, not to mention the cost of driving into the city solely for a haircut was unjustifiable and the pretentious atmosphere that goes along with most ny salons. Hiroshi listened to what I envisioned, did it amazingly and ensured he was doing what I wanted every step. I have been going to Katsuko's at least once a year for almost 15 years now and I have never walked away disappointed. The staff are friendly and perhaps more importantly, very skilled stylists. I always have my haircut by Katsuko and she's always friendly to talk with and meticulous with the cut. The price is not very expensive and definitely worth it, especially with the scalp and shoulder massage. I live down by South Street Seaport in Manhattan and even on the weekends, it's an hour long commute, tops. It's very easy to get to from New York City - just get to the George Washington Bridge terminal on 175th street and take any bus across the bridge to the first stop. It is a five minute walk from there. Go to Katsuko's, it's the best! read more

Had my eye lash extensions done by Kelly they came out great. I gave it four stars because of parking ( I had to cross the street it was very busy with cars whizzing by) but one of the employees did go out and feed the meter for me which was wonderful. Also because I had to pay cash no credit card accepted at least that's what she told me. But all in all great experience.
