We happened upon a fabulous history guide upon walking in. A 50+ year native called us to the front porch of the Douglas mansion (which sits upon some of the mine tunnels!) and delighted us with a passionate 30 minute jam packed history. Not sure if this is a daily event, but I know we were extremely lucky to hear this talk. I cannot wait to go back and learn more.

Clearly what the original architect had in mind many years ago never came to fruition as it really hasn't changed in years. Is appears to be a small artist community but we didn't see anything going on at the moment so couldn't tell if it id still active or they make everything south in Scottsdale at Cosanti. There is a gift shop where you can watch a brief video on the history and learn about their wind chime creations. Personally I've received many of the wind chimes over the last 20 years for housewarmings or Christmas gifts. Each is unique. The greeter in the gift shop was friendly and stated there is a tour available as well. We didn't have time for the tour but purchased a couple of small gifts. He suggested visiting the Scottsdale location as well which is called Cosanti. I had no idea it was located in Scott's well. Will check it out.

We signed up for the tour and yes the dirt road is rough leading to Arcosanti, our tour guide mentioned a future expansion in the living area but in order to keep building the road has to be paved, hopefully it's better in the future. The behind the scenes tour participants was twice as large as they normally have so at times it was hard to see and hear though our guide tried their best. We loved hearing about the different spaces and seeing what was hand made by volunteers though we enjoyed the more intimate feel of Cosanti more. The gift shop is one staircase above the cafe and it's where the tour meets. There is better bell selection at Cosanti If that's what you are shopping for but Arcosanti has more hand-made knick knacks by residents, there is also a nice selection of books about Soleri and Arcosanti. You can stay the night here and get a good view of the stars and a more intimate experience, we would do this next time. The architecture and vibe would make it worth it!

A nice little history museum about Jerome…read more We popped in here while in town to have lunch. The history museum occupies the back 2/3 of this building. The front 1/3 houses a gift shop of many art pieces etc. There was a $2 pp fee to go back to the museum section. We found the artifacts, plaques and more to be quite informative on why Jerome exists and what it was all about in its heyday of mostly copper mining. If you're in Jerome and want to take a deep dive into its history, this stop is a must.

It was named for Eugene Murray Jerome, a New York investor who owned the mineral rights and financed mining there. Eugene Jerome never visited his namesake town. The town housed the workers in the nearby United Verde Mine, which was to produce over 1 billion dollars in copper, gold and silver over the next 70 years. Jerome became a notorious "wild west" town, a hotbed of prostitution, gambling, and vice. On 5 February 1903, the New York Sun proclaimed Jerome to be "the wickedest town in the West". This past November while riding through Jerome I was stopped and harassed by the local police department for failure to follow a traffic control device. Guess what? There was no traffic control device to follow. So after making it clear I would be fighting the ticket, they switch charges to unsafe passing on the left. Wrong again, the road was 3 lanes wide and a one way. Needless to say the crooked judge could not let me get away without a shakedown, so she invented a new charge, noise violation under Town of Jerome Municipal Code. Noise violations are completely arbitrary and without any measure of sound, it's preposterous to make such a charge. Needless to say $127 lighter in the wallet I suggest you DON'T support tourist shakedowns. (This is not the first/only shakedown I know of, just the only one that happened to me - standard line, "It's just a municipal code and there will be no points on your licence, just mail the $200 in.")

We had self toured Jerome with our children 30 years ago and the town and area had grown quite a bit. Turns out, it was a slow day and we were the only two people on the Classic Jerome tour. We had been on small tours before and the guide went through the tour quickly and ended early. Not this Guide! Dave S. was a wonderful guide! He took extra time and care with us, a couple Seniors. He enthralled us with constant stories of surrounding towns and Jerome. He has amassed a great deal of knowledge having lived in the area since a small child and with various guide jobs over the years. He actually asked us what we were interested in and took care to allow us to take in the sights and pictures. And in Jerome, since my wife uses a walker, he dropped us off in front of the restaurant where we planned lunch, then picked us up just up the block. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and were very fortunate to choose Tours of Jerome and Dave.

You can stand on it and think about how long it would take you to hit the ground if you fell. I am terrible at math but there's some sort of formula there. There is some information regarding the mining history of this site as well as an infographic that compares the length of the mine shaft to famously tall buildings. Easy parking. Don't miss this weird opportunity to stand over an insanely long hole in the ground.

Friendly, and really informative when it came to explaining the history of Jerome and why so much activity is present.
