A while back, I visited Jerome, and while it is located in Arizona with plenty of land, I found…read morethat parking was limited. This is surprising since there is so much space, but perhaps the town of Jerome wants to make money off of paid parking spots. I was not parked long and I couldn't find the machine to pay as the lot was a dirt road, so I decided to wonder into some of the little shops and explore. Very quickly the police put a parking ticket on my car's windshield. I can't remember the exact issue but I think if I paid online quickly, the fine would be half of $25 which was the actual fine. When I was unable to do it online, I decided to call the police department, and I think I spoke to the assistant chief or someone who was very condescending and rude over the phone. It was almost as if he was trying to intimidate me by quickly and aggressively telling me that he had a high position in the department, and I found this to be immature and unprofessional. I had a bad experience with the police department. They should be helpful rather than getting annoyed when someone has a legitimate concern. They should be trained not to get defensive and rude, but to investigate and try to learn from different peoples' concerns.

What great slice of history, a museum full of spectacular specimens, A town full of mystery, a…read more1900 ft mine shift that you can walk over (it's covered with glass!), a spectacular mansion which serves as the state museum, and beautiful scenery including a view of the San Francisco peaks in Flagstaff and views of the red rocks of Sedona. We happened upon a fabulous history guide upon walking in. A 50+ year native called us to the front porch of the Douglas mansion (which sits upon some of the mine tunnels!) and delighted us with a passionate 30 minute jam packed history. Not sure if this is a daily event, but I know we were extremely lucky to hear this talk. I cannot wait to go back and learn more.

The views of the Sedona's Red Rock , Verde Valley and the San Francisco Peaks were beautiful. Worth spending a few hours visiting.

This will help to finish the hike before noon. If you are not a morning person, download the Sedona shuttle app, follow the shuttle into the lot for a parking spot. The trail up to the cathedral rock can be narrow and steep at some sections. Going up is more difficult than coming down based on our experience. The view at the top - spectacular!

Sharon and I decided we were obviously elite athletes, so naturally we set out to hike it. About a quarter mile in, our lungs filed a formal complaint. Now to be fair, the trail doesn't exactly ease you into things. It basically looks at you and says, "Oh... you thought this was a walk?" From there it's steep rock, scrambling, and a steady reminder that gravity is very real. We stopped. We rested. We evaluated several recent life choices. And then we kept going. At some point along the climb it hits you: this might be the only hike where the staircase goes straight up the side of a postcard. I made it as high as I reasonably could before deciding that discretion is sometimes the better part of valor... and oxygen. So we turned back. And honestly, that's when the best part of the experience happened. As we paused on the way down, we chatted with hikers from all over North America heading up and down the trail. Every single person asked the same thing: "How far did you make it?" Not a single raised eyebrow when we said we didn't summit. Meanwhile I had been judging myself like I'd just been cut from the varsity team. From where we rested, the view over Sedona was absolutely gorgeous. Calm. Expansive. Peaceful. One of those views that makes you stop talking for a minute and just take it in. Also, small public service announcement: I originally thought this hike led to the famous chapel built into the red rocks. That would be Chapel of the Holy Cross... which is a very different destination and a much easier visit. Definitely double-check your notes before committing to this particular adventure. The trail is challenging, the scenery is spectacular, and the experience has a little bit of magic to it. Five stars for a hike that reminds you the goal isn't always the summit... sometimes it's just appreciating the view from exactly where you are.

A nice little history museum about Jerome…read more We popped in here while in town to have lunch. The history museum occupies the back 2/3 of this building. The front 1/3 houses a gift shop of many art pieces etc. There was a $2 pp fee to go back to the museum section. We found the artifacts, plaques and more to be quite informative on why Jerome exists and what it was all about in its heyday of mostly copper mining. If you're in Jerome and want to take a deep dive into its history, this stop is a must.
