Dr. Kapoor is a control freak who BREAKS PRIVILEGE
Prior to the incident below, Dr. Kapoor looked up my emergency contact and called her, divulging things we'd discussed. So inappropriate! This happened years ago but still makes me furious, so I felt like updating my review.
My newborn's weight had gone up and down a little since birth, but when I went to his one-month wellness exam, he had gained 17 ounces in sixteen days, well within the 0.5 to 1 ounce per day newborns are expected to gain. The appointment (with one of the nurses, as I had already determined I would prefer not to see Dr. Kapoor anymore) went well. I was told my baby was doing great and we could come back in a month.
About six hours later, I received a message from the nurse. She said that after reviewing his file again when she was at home (which I think really means consulting with Dr. Kapoor) she was really concerned about his weight and told me I needed to take him to the hospital right away. Extremely anxious, I drove to Good Sam, where we had to spend the night.
The night nurses, hospital pediatrician and other staff all were confused as to why we were there. The nurse informed me that babies who are checked in under "failure to thrive", which apparently is the label Dr. Kapoor's office gave him, typically are skin and bones and are often in the 5th percentile for weight (My son as in the 25th percentile, not a reason to send him to the hospital!). I asked if she thought my doctor was being a little alarmist, and she said yes. Each time someone came into my room and gave this same feedback, I became more and more annoyed.
I got no sleep; there was a crying child in the next room; and the 9:00 a.m. discharge time I was told would be likely turned into 4:30 p.m. the next day. I was forced to talk to a nutritionist, a lactation consultant, and a social worker! It was a terribly stressful and completely unnecessary experience. There was no reason to send me to the hospital. If anything, they could have told me to take him the next day for some blood work, or come in the next week for another weigh-in. Why was it necessary to drop everything and rush to the hospital when he'd been consistently gaining weight for more than two weeks???
Also, on four different occasions, Dr. Kapoor suggested I have my mom come stay with me so I could breast feed the baby and then have my mom feed him a bottle so I could get some rest. Every time she said this, I told her I didn't need any help at home. The fourth time, I started crying, demanding to know why she kept saying this. I'm a grown woman who happens to be single; I'm not an overwhelmed teen mom. It was really obnoxious and offensive.
After this experience I read another Yelp review about Dr. Kapoor threatening to call Child Services when a couple refused a hearing test. She is a control freak casually throwing around Child Services and "failure to thrive" designations when her patients don't do exactly as asked. Horrible, just horrible. read more
