General 54 is a lovely boutique and is part of the Mile End shopping district, which has been around since '04. They offer Montreal-based high-end designers in a one-stop shop, and I fell in love with some of their items. Brands such as Norsola Johnson, Red Sofa, Urbanite, Rare Specimens, Pillar, and Olena Zylak are some that the store showcases. The Sunja Link linen wear were all absolutely gorgeous - I had to get my hands on their adorable casual overalls! The eco-friendly, vegetable-tanned leather goods from Matu were also something I had to have, especially their cute little 'lunch sack' bags! Staff were super friendly and offered any assistance that you could possibly ever need. Great store filled with Canadiana designed clothing, original hand-made jewelry, and other nice accessories. There are also candles etc. Canadian made clothes are less commercial feeling, and have more of a feel that they were made by a skilled tailor. The fabrics seem thicker and of more substance. Quality is a word that comes to mind. But the cuts are also so freaking conservative. Is that the style? Having the neckline up to the chin? Mini preacher-school collars? Dowdy hemlines and fully covered skin? Maybe it is because it is fall and getting cold out. Soon the clothes will be to protect from the frost bite. But there is so much of this feeling of repressed school-girl mixed in with forest-y plaid, a dash of nunnery. Maybe that is the style these days, what do I know. Anyway, this store has an amazing selection of talented Canadian designer finds. Make sure you try everything on and pick things that suit your personality. You will not be disappointed in the end. If you don't find clothes that suit your fancy, browse carefully through the jewelry. You will find something very unique and interesting to spice up your outfit and turn yourself into a cool-kid. read more

Location: On the main. Street parking is available but metered. Depending on where you're coming from (and if you like to walk), you can either get off at St. Laurent and walk up (or take the 55) or you get off at Mont-Royal and walk over. The place: The space isn't too big, but it's bright and the clothing is well laid-out. Meaning that you can actually walk around without knocking anything over. I'm not a fan of the changing rooms because they've got curtains instead of doors and the curtains don't actually close all the way. The goods: General 54 carries women's clothing made by local designers, such as Jennifer Glasgow and Olena Zylak. If you're looking for something that's unique (i.e. not generic like what you'll find at GAP), and well-made then this is a great place to shop. I picked up a dress that I love by Jennifer Glasgow and stop in every once in a while to see if anything peaks my interest. Service: Friendly but not intrusive. Price point: It's going to depend if you happen to pop by when they have a sale going on, but I'd say dresses average $120 and up. read more

I regret I cannot put a better review than that, but it's mostly because of 2 things: 1: I'm not their key market and 2: I feel it's quite pricy. Yes it is on St-Viateur. Yes it is some hand made local products. Yes it is fairtrade and therefore, you need to pay a bit more for that. General 54 sell,some Clothe, some hand made soap, some hand made miror and stuff like that. It's all about the local community. My issue it mainly that I didn't find it particularly attracting for Men. Am I exagerating a little? Maybe? I'm fairly confident that the people shopping there are mostly Woman. That my main issue with the place. I went there for a Yelp Event, it was a nice place to chat and relax with friend, I wouldn't consider going back, but I'm happy went there once. read more

Discovered this place last night when they hosted the Yelp christmas party. Cute little boutique packed with great selection of chic casual women's wear, all of which are works of independent (and I think) Canadian designers. My friend and I went from one rack to the other with plenty of 'ooohs!' and 'aaaahs!' and wished we could buy them all. Price is a little steep (for my budget), but given that their pieces are not mass produced, it is quite reasonable. Treated myself to a super cute skirt that was simply irresistible. They provide such amazing customer service! I absolutely love Jennifer Glasgow's designs and my husband ordered me two of her dresses for Christmas. They didn't fit, but Jennifer let me mail them from Toronto to exchange for something else. I happened to be in Montreal and came in to General 54 to try on the pieces I was going get in the exchange and the sales representative was super helpful. She knew exactly what would fit my body type. Overall, they have gorgeous clothes and excellent customer service! read more

This is a great little boutique in the Mile End area with fantastic customer service. I had a purchased a beautiful skirt (designed by the owner) that was made in a delicate fabric. I only noticed once I got back to my hotel that the delicate fabric had some imperfections that definitely would have become worse very quickly, and was un-repairable. I reached out to the shop, and they made every effort to find me a new skirt back at their studio that was in better shape. You certainly have the feeling that the owner wants you to be happy.
