I've tried calling 4 times this week to place an order for thanksgiving. I only wanted 3 lbs of turkey and a slice of pumpkin pie. Each time I called, I was told to call back the following day "anytime after 11 am" to talk to Heather. Each day I called, I seemed to "miss her" and to call back the following day. Had a recommendation to come here... it was recommended not to go during rush lunch hour... I disagree!! Even when they're rushing and busy GO GO GO!!! It was very sweet that they went out of their way to have someone explain to us how it all works there. There's so much of a selection but they certainly recommend the fish sandwich (which I got! Which was delicious!) Wait time isn't so bad, you won't see anyone standing around they're moving around taking care of everyone. It's truly amazing! I truly don't get the raving. When we walked into this place, food safety red flags were everywhere. The food in the warmers were way older than 4 hours, there was fish everywhere, out in the open, just layered over multiple tables & the vents were dirty af. This is your typical frozen food place that is taken out of the freezer, straight to fryer. Their fish looks to be breaded on some assembly belt around the corner, in the same building, so that's at least better than fish from the grocery store but either way, they need a lot of help with their cleanliness. Nothing in the lunch line of sides looked good & our food was very mediocre. The bread table at least had some decent options. The older peeps that work there were incredibly nice but the big guy that handles the fish/fryers was not. He gets super annoyed when you don't know what you want right away. Like chill, bro. Great prices, great service, local and trusted. Chicken sandwiches are really good, 11 dollars a plate. 2 sides and chicken and fries for 11 dollars. Fish is really good but is pricey, I frequently visit here and it is always good. The only thing I do not like is the lack of pest control, the flys get pretty bad in the summer. Other than that, excellent place to be, Thompson park is a 2 minute walk. Tables and grills and provided, there is large playground, fields to walk and trails to hike. I gave this establishment a 5 because I'd their longevity in the did service business, their customer service, and their food! As soon as we walked in we were greeted and told how to maneuver around the cafeteria type line and where to request the different sides that were available. I had the fried haddock (just make a filet was enough for me) with onion rings with a side of macaroni and cheese and 3 bean salad. I haven't been here since the 70's. It was fantastic. We love flakey fish that is crisp but not greasy. The fish here is perfect. We also got the Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and potato salad with olives. It was all delicious. This is more of a take out place, there are a few stools at a counter, no tables and chairs. Don't expect ambiance, and don't walk away because it is lacking. The food is great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Here's what I noticed: -a huge metal prep table covered in mounds of breadcrumbs with 10 or so pieces of fish lying in it, directly adjacent to the scale where they weigh out the frozen burgers, fries, and onion rings they are about to feed you -fry cooks yelling at each other -the owner's son attempting to dominate his employees by throwing around that he is, in fact, the owner's son -icky floors and prep areas -fries that tasted like dirty oil -really soft, lovely looking dinner rolls -a smell that reminded me of my garbage can after I clean out the fridge (spoiled fish) -a 15-20 minute wait -a terrible (inedible) burger - clearly from frozen (I watched), 4 slices of cheese, tasted "off" -a burger + onion rings, and 4 chicken tenders + crinkle fries for $24 Not mad, just disappointed. read more

I saw this restaurant the last time I visited my nephew and wanted to try it. However I did not have the opportunity but I made it my business to this trip. I have never had such wonderful service. They walked me thru the entire menu and the restaurant. They make the tartar sauce and pies daily. The mouth watering scallops was to die for. This was the first time I enjoyed scallops. The haddock and mash potato was also good. I ordered the seafood platter that came with shrimp, haddock, clamp strips, butter roll, and your choice of between fries, sweet potato fries or onion rings and side. I chose onion rings and mash potato. The kids meal came with a piece of desert and we had the chicken nuggets and fries. I also ordere a side of Cole slaw. Most of the sides go by weight. I also tried the apple pie which was my least favorite. It was limp meaning very thin and I did not taste one bit of an apple. I heard good things about the donuts from here so I called around 9:00 am to ask if they had made donuts this morning and the employee said yes and that was it. So I get there around 9:30 am and I see the sign that says they don't open until 10:30. So I look in the window and the case is already full of donuts so I holler in and ask if I can just buy a few and the employee said no we don't open until 10:30. Honestly, this place was not that good to me. I got the fish sandwich because supposedly the place had good fish, but it reminded me of the fish sticks you put in the oven years ago when I was a kid and those fish sticks tasted better. I will say that the macaroni and cheese was pretty good. I would go back and get that again. I also had onion rings with my meal and the better on those was really good as well. I think I was mostly disappointed because I really had my heart set on some fish and it wasn't good. So I guess my expectations ruined my experience. At first, it appeared like the food was frozen but later realized it tasted AMAZING. Food is so good, definitely not healthy by any means..but huge portions, and tasty deliciousness. Too bad for Kelly B. this has been an establishment since 1953. I used to live in the area and would bring meals home to the cottage at Knobby Knoll on Lake Ontario. On this visit, I brought some newbies with me. We asked for two, large haddock fillets. The cook showed us the two pieces before coating them and gently placing them in their fryer. While these were cooking, we ordered a pound of their famous baked beans and some scolloped potatoes and ham. Then we noticed their rolls.... Sinfully good. All in all, the meal was perfect. My family and I had expected Jean's Beans to be a sit-down restaurant; however, it is actually a take- out place with a few chairs inside and a sit at counter with our backs against the room. The set up is confusing as soon as we walked in, the center of the room is where you order and you have to walk around to order and select your sides. To our surprise a lot of the food is frozen, and our fish fry was overcooked, and very greasy. A few of us ordered the Family of Four fish fry. When our order was up is was wrapped in multiple layers of paper products and wax paper. When unwrapped there was one large and one small piece of fish, I assumed there would be 4 pieces of fish, however we had to ask for a knife to cut the fish evenly and we were given a two inch tiny knife to cut through a very over fried fish. Potato salad had good flavor but were whipped. The coleslaw was vinegar based. All in all the food was ok, confusing to order, and not the least bit amazing as others have described. I had them cater for my wedding. Food in store when we went in for tasting was great. Food that was at my wedding was not what was represented in the storefront. Pulled pork was soupy with BBQ sauce and burnt on the edges, tossed salad was ok, Scalloped potatoes were cut in chunks for the most part but they did taste good, mac n cheese was average but I am not a big mac n cheese person, baked chicken was cooked and dry but somehow the skin was not browned at all and it was flaccid, rolls were fantastic, coleslaw and beans were also very good. My pick up was supposed to be at ten am. When we went to pick up we were told it was not ready because the Mayonaise was not made yet (not sure how that we effected us, maybe it was for the coleslaw) so we were not able to get our order til 10:30. I made a $100. 00 deposit . I called 3 days prior and made the final payment. 3 days later I find from my bank that I was overcharged by $194. 00. When I called to get it fixed I had to wait 3 days til the person who takes care of catering comes in to call me back. When they call, they tell me me they do not keep the catering reciets and thankfully I took a photo of it when I made the initial deposit because they had no idea what we had ordered or how much of it. She tells me she has to look into the overcharge with her bank to see if it really happened that the money went into thier bank. I try nicely to explain my discontent just as a courtesy to a small business. My parents have owned restaurants and bars and I have worked in the food industry my entire life. I was kind and even apologized for having to say anything because I know how the public can be sometimes. I told her I just wanted to make them aware and was not looking for a discount or anything. The lady was very rude to me and told me there was no way what I was saying was true because they have had the same catering cook for years. I ended the call at that. After another 3 days, with no call back from them, the $194.00 dollar overcharge was placed back into my bank. I will still go in for the things like beans and coleslaw when I am in the area, but I can say, I am not so sure the 75 people that attended my wedding would ever consider it. I will never have them cater again. I hate leaving a poor review. I am not this type of person, but my wedding food was terrible and the response to my over the phone concerns was rude and not recieved as a constructive criticism. I have eaten here many many times before and even bought holiday special meals before in the past. It's a middle of the road local family owned establishment. For convenience and to allow more family time without the hassle of cooking and cleanup, we ordered the packaged meals again this year. The workers who were there seemed confused and hurried even though there weren't many people coming in at the time we picked up the meals we had pre-ordered. To our suprise both the quality and portions were not up to their normal standard. The mac & cheese for kids was watery and thin and I had to bake it an additional 40 mins and add cheese to get it edible. We actually had leftovers from slim portions because the meal just didn't seem freshly prepared. Even the squirrels aren't eating these leftovers! We also bought 2 pies. These were undercooked too and relatively tasteless. I think our family would have been more satisfied with selections from the grocery store frozen food isle.
