A Watertown institution that evokes nostalgia for many locals and it keeps delivering those memories like it has for decades. Recently, I stopped to pick up dinner and get my family of four a fish dinner just like my dad did and my grandfather as well before me. Fried fish, fried chicken and sides like potato salad and of course the beans were staples when they came home. The occasional pie, brownie or donut would come with the usual staples. For many of us we come for what it evokes and others are experiencing it for the first time. Reminicing is just an added value and it comes for free. read more

Found my way here after seeing the Eat Local NY dude's review. I'm usually skeptical whenever he says something is the best ever but this really might be the best fish sandwich I've ever had! Service was super friendly and helpful. Also had one of their donuts for dessert that was also great. Can't wait to go again! read more

I've tried calling 4 times this week to place an order for thanksgiving. I only wanted 3 lbs of turkey and a slice of pumpkin pie. Each time I called, I was told to call back the following day "anytime after 11 am" to talk to Heather. Each day I called, I seemed to "miss her" and to call back the following day. Today, I called 3 times and each time I heard background noise followed by the sound of the phone call being ended. read more

Had a recommendation to come here... it was recommended not to go during rush lunch hour... I disagree!! Even when they're rushing and busy GO GO GO!!! It was very sweet that they went out of their way to have someone explain to us how it all works there. There's so much of a selection but they certainly recommend the fish sandwich (which I got! Which was delicious!) Wait time isn't so bad, you won't see anyone standing around they're moving around taking care of everyone. It's truly amazing! Our first time here and we definitely will be returning!!!! Thank you so much for the amazing food and service! ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND!!! read more

Great prices, great service, local and trusted. Chicken sandwiches are really good, 11 dollars a plate. 2 sides and chicken and fries for 11 dollars. Fish is really good but is pricey, I frequently visit here and it is always good. The only thing I do not like is the lack of pest control, the flys get pretty bad in the summer. Other than that, excellent place to be, Thompson park is a 2 minute walk. Tables and grills and provided, there is large playground, fields to walk and trails to hike. Lot of great things to do and see, there is even a zoo. read more

Great food! Awesome customer service! This was my first time coming to Jeans Beans. The gentleman at the grill was so helpful! The cashier at the register was such a sweetie! I will be coming back again and again! read more

Jeans beans is awesome. The food is great. The baked goods are especially great. The service is just as good. Friendly owners and staff. I highly recommend this place. read more

I truly don't get the raving. When we walked into this place, food safety red flags were everywhere. The food in the warmers were way older than 4 hours, there was fish everywhere, out in the open, just layered over multiple tables & the vents were dirty af. This is your typical frozen food place that is taken out of the freezer, straight to fryer. Their fish looks to be breaded on some assembly belt around the corner, in the same building, so that's at least better than fish from the grocery store but either way, they need a lot of help with their cleanliness. Nothing in the lunch line of sides looked good & our food was very mediocre. The bread table at least had some decent options. The older peeps that work there were incredibly nice but the big guy that handles the fish/fryers was not. He gets super annoyed when you don't know what you want right away. Like chill, bro. First timers aren't going to be familiar with what's all there. He also didn't wash his hands at all, between orders. read more

I gave this establishment a 5 because I'd their longevity in the did service business, their customer service, and their food! As soon as we walked in we were greeted and told how to maneuver around the cafeteria type line and where to request the different sides that were available. I had the fried haddock (just make a filet was enough for me) with onion rings with a side of macaroni and cheese and 3 bean salad. Well the fish was cooked to perfection and they make their own bread crumbs for their fish!!!!! The 3 bean salad was something I could eat daily! And the macaroni and cheese was for my daughter, which she liked. I will definitely go back or place an order for delivery! There are so many different opinions even for kids! read more

I haven't been here since the 70's. It was fantastic. We love flakey fish that is crisp but not greasy. The fish here is perfect. We also got the Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and potato salad with olives. It was all delicious. This is more of a take out place, there are a few stools at a counter, no tables and chairs. Don't expect ambiance, and don't walk away because it is lacking. The food is great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We definitely will go back when we come back to Watertown next year. read more

Their donuts are good. Cake donuts with the most sprinkles ever. Full stop. Jean's Beans is a Watertown establishment, and has been there for 70 years. I love to support a little guy, so instead of Tully's, we went to Jeans Beans for lunch today and was upset I made the switch. Here's what I noticed: -a huge metal prep table covered in mounds of breadcrumbs with 10 or so pieces of fish lying in it, directly adjacent to the scale where they weigh out the frozen burgers, fries, and onion rings they are about to feed you -fry cooks yelling at each other -the owner's son attempting to dominate his employees by throwing around that he is, in fact, the owner's son -icky floors and prep areas -fries that tasted like dirty oil -really soft, lovely looking dinner rolls -a smell that reminded me of my garbage can after I clean out the fridge (spoiled fish) -a 15-20 minute wait -a terrible (inedible) burger - clearly from frozen (I watched), 4 slices of cheese, tasted "off" -a burger + onion rings, and 4 chicken tenders + crinkle fries for $24 Not mad, just disappointed. read more

Bad food worse service. My wife used to come here as a kid and was really looking forward to it when visiting family. Food was cold (and the warm food was disgusting). We ordered a hot dog for my daughter that came literally half cooked. The staff were rude, and it took several attempts to get our order correct. With chain restaurants continuing to move into Watertown, we really wanted to support a local place, but what a mistake we made. read more

Still all my stars sent this way. Sides that we had along w the dinner for 2 were Mac n cheese, not a winner, it wasn't bad but not creamy, that kind of seperated/clumpy, overly done roni Macaroni salad on the other hand was awesome, nice tang Coleslaw finely chopped fresh and slightly vinegar toned Beans of course, thick, smokey, fatty yumness The fish, light breading, tender, thick and moist, slathered in homemade tartar read more

I went two weeks ago to pick up some sides and desserts to go with some chicken I had already made. Got quite a few since this was our first time there to give them a try. This is what we tried: Baked beans--worst baked beans I have ever had. Mashed potatoes--ok but the refrigerated bob Evans ones are better. Macaroni & cheese--this was actually very good! Potato salad--husband thought it was great! (I didn't try bc I don't like potato salad) Cole slaw---ok Brownies--very dry! Might try some of their fried food to see if it is better. read more

I saw this restaurant the last time I visited my nephew and wanted to try it. However I did not have the opportunity but I made it my business to this trip. I have never had such wonderful service. They walked me thru the entire menu and the restaurant. They make the tartar sauce and pies daily. The mouth watering scallops was to die for. This was the first time I enjoyed scallops. The haddock and mash potato was also good. I ordered the seafood platter that came with shrimp, haddock, clamp strips, butter roll, and your choice of between fries, sweet potato fries or onion rings and side. I chose onion rings and mash potato. The kids meal came with a piece of desert and we had the chicken nuggets and fries. I also ordere a side of Cole slaw. Most of the sides go by weight. I also tried the apple pie which was my least favorite. It was limp meaning very thin and I did not taste one bit of an apple. I strongly recommend this restaurant for food that was full of flavor and great hospitality. P.s my 1 year old nephew loved the mash potatoes and gravy so did I. read more

We ordered the haddock dinner and it was amazing we're able to have it delivered!!! So excited about being able to get Jean's Beans again

I heard good things about the donuts from here so I called around 9:00 am to ask if they had made donuts this morning and the employee said yes and that was it. So I get there around 9:30 am and I see the sign that says they don't open until 10:30. So I look in the window and the case is already full of donuts so I holler in and ask if I can just buy a few and the employee said no we don't open until 10:30. So why answer the phone at 9 am and tell me you have donuts but not say oh but we don't open until 10:30? And the donuts obviously aren't very fresh. read more

Easily the best fish sandwich I've had since leaving Key West in 2018. The onion rings were decent, and the mac and cheese was amazing. Comfort food at its finest! The delivery person was prompt and professional, all in all a very positive carry out delivery experience. read more

Absolutely the best fish fry! Love the set up, easy to maneuver through even with all the covid restrictions. And of course the staff is super friendly, efficient and eager to help you find what you need and get you on your way! Never disappointed read more

Honestly, this place was not that good to me. I got the fish sandwich because supposedly the place had good fish, but it reminded me of the fish sticks you put in the oven years ago when I was a kid and those fish sticks tasted better. I will say that the macaroni and cheese was pretty good. I would go back and get that again. I also had onion rings with my meal and the better on those was really good as well. I think I was mostly disappointed because I really had my heart set on some fish and it wasn't good. So I guess my expectations ruined my experience. I don't think I will be trying this location again. The service was friendly and the price wasn't too bad. The location is really small and I don't think it was anywhere to sit down and eat. This place is more of a order and go. Nevertheless I'm glad I got a chance to experience this location. Maybe if you tried it out you will have a better experience than I did. read more

So our first time here, we were a little overwhelmed. We didn't quite know how to order, and we walked around aimlessly for a second. Someone finally shoulted out where we could go and we went ahead and grabbed the chicken sandwich combos. :) the people who worked there were super friendly and informative. At first, it appeared like the food was frozen but later realized it tasted AMAZING. Food is so good, definitely not healthy by any means..but huge portions, and tasty deliciousness. Along with combos, you get a hot side from their buffet style side areas. Theyre baked ziti and mac and cheese are TASTY. Prices are pretty low. Reason they dont have a 5 star is because I didn't particularly feel the place looked clean..but the amazing customer service we recieved was amazing. read more

Too bad for Kelly B. this has been an establishment since 1953. I used to live in the area and would bring meals home to the cottage at Knobby Knoll on Lake Ontario. On this visit, I brought some newbies with me. We asked for two, large haddock fillets. The cook showed us the two pieces before coating them and gently placing them in their fryer. While these were cooking, we ordered a pound of their famous baked beans and some scolloped potatoes and ham. Then we noticed their rolls.... Sinfully good. All in all, the meal was perfect. The recipes never change. Seems to be the same process since I was a child. Very much like homemade. It's always busy. But never too busy to be friendly to their customers. read more

Jean's Beans - a car parked in front of a building - Sandwiches Near Me - Watertown, New York

Ok, so i'm not that big on 5 star ratings, but Jean's Beans earns it all the way. it has this down-home feeling that's hard to find in the north country, and i just love the whole "pick and choose" buffet style they have. Also, I have a "Not-So-Secret", secret love of fish, and i cant recall a single time iv been disappointed. the seafood platter is AWESOME ! and i can take it home. this is the place for a "no-hassle movie nite" ( plus there's a redbox at the Walgreen's a block away) now all good stories also have a bad point, and here it is: if you want the meatloaf, the mashed potatoes, or coleslaw to have the normal texture you have to come earlier than 4:30. i usually get there around 4:30ish and its always dried out by the time i get it, and drive home( i live 10 min away) . overall 5 stars read more

My family and I had expected Jean's Beans to be a sit-down restaurant; however, it is actually a take- out place with a few chairs inside and a sit at counter with our backs against the room. The set up is confusing as soon as we walked in, the center of the room is where you order and you have to walk around to order and select your sides. To our surprise a lot of the food is frozen, and our fish fry was overcooked, and very greasy. A few of us ordered the Family of Four fish fry. When our order was up is was wrapped in multiple layers of paper products and wax paper. When unwrapped there was one large and one small piece of fish, I assumed there would be 4 pieces of fish, however we had to ask for a knife to cut the fish evenly and we were given a two inch tiny knife to cut through a very over fried fish. Potato salad had good flavor but were whipped. The coleslaw was vinegar based. All in all the food was ok, confusing to order, and not the least bit amazing as others have described. However, the staff were very nice. read more

I can't believe the people on here that low rated jeans beans , it don't even make sence , cold food is impossible Due to they cook your food while your ordering ! Only way is if you called and you came late , that your fault . And other comments . Someone commented not home made . It is all home made . That's pretty obvious . One other low rate if was based on its workers , there not in offices sitting at a desk ! There very busy , hard workers and the nicest people busting there buts in hot kitchen with great food ! Hopefully anyone reading the one or two stars think about what someone's saying easy to figure out , anyone would now that goes to this place to eat . It is old building , but passes inspection , does not affect anything about the workers or food ! This place is great food great people . Great hot and ready selections of food , great variety! My name is Roxanne Jobson I do not work there or know anyone that works there . I just go there and eat and been going for many years , great hard workers nice and kind . All the food prep very clean , read more

Ok. First the bad. Know what you want because the first person you meet is the fry cook and if you don't know the system he makes you feel like an idiot. It wasn't even busy, although there were a lot of delivery orders going down. Now the good. The girls that help with the sides and the checkout are very pleasant and helpful. The food, well it goes without saying that the food is exceptional. A historical Watertown attraction and rightfully so. read more

I had them cater for my wedding. Food in store when we went in for tasting was great. Food that was at my wedding was not what was represented in the storefront. Pulled pork was soupy with BBQ sauce and burnt on the edges, tossed salad was ok, Scalloped potatoes were cut in chunks for the most part but they did taste good, mac n cheese was average but I am not a big mac n cheese person, baked chicken was cooked and dry but somehow the skin was not browned at all and it was flaccid, rolls were fantastic, coleslaw and beans were also very good. My pick up was supposed to be at ten am. When we went to pick up we were told it was not ready because the Mayonaise was not made yet (not sure how that we effected us, maybe it was for the coleslaw) so we were not able to get our order til 10:30. I made a $100. 00 deposit . I called 3 days prior and made the final payment. 3 days later I find from my bank that I was overcharged by $194. 00. When I called to get it fixed I had to wait 3 days til the person who takes care of catering comes in to call me back. When they call, they tell me me they do not keep the catering reciets and thankfully I took a photo of it when I made the initial deposit because they had no idea what we had ordered or how much of it. She tells me she has to look into the overcharge with her bank to see if it really happened that the money went into thier bank. I try nicely to explain my discontent just as a courtesy to a small business. My parents have owned restaurants and bars and I have worked in the food industry my entire life. I was kind and even apologized for having to say anything because I know how the public can be sometimes. I told her I just wanted to make them aware and was not looking for a discount or anything. The lady was very rude to me and told me there was no way what I was saying was true because they have had the same catering cook for years. I ended the call at that. After another 3 days, with no call back from them, the $194.00 dollar overcharge was placed back into my bank. I will still go in for the things like beans and coleslaw when I am in the area, but I can say, I am not so sure the 75 people that attended my wedding would ever consider it. I will never have them cater again. I hate leaving a poor review. I am not this type of person, but my wedding food was terrible and the response to my over the phone concerns was rude and not recieved as a constructive criticism. Poor public customer service. read more
