Steve took one look at it and saw what I saw - the truck still had enormous value. He found a low mileage replacement engine. He didn't stop there. He fixed several worn parts on the front steering. He fixed a muffler hanger. He rotated the tires and replaced a rusted bracket on the rear butterfly spring - just because it needed to be done! I brought him a truck that I was told was scrap!?@&$/. He gave me back a truck in better condition than when I bought it 16 years ago!! He's everything you want in a mechanic: knowledge, CARES, trustworthy, and takes pride in making it right. The bill came up right on the estimate (plus the unforeseen needed repairs). I'll always call Merrill first. If you still aren't convinced, let him be your second opinion... he saved my truck for less than I could by another used.

They do stay pretty busy (for good reason), so you may not feel like you are as valued as you may hope from a service provider upon first impression. HOWEVER, this shop is absolutely the place to be for your diesel trucks!! My first experience with Chad and his team proved to me this is a place you can trust. I had an f350 I was absolutely convinced needed a trans rebuild! I dropped the truck off after waiting a few weeks for an appointment and after a day or so Chad (the owner) calls and tells me my trans is just fine and does not need rebuilt, I insisted that the trans was trashed they need only to get the truck up to running temp and the trans will go into limp mode, the next day they called me and told me that it was only a rusted in half power lead to the ecu/ pcm and that the trans was like new again! The charge was only for a couple hours shop time which pales in comparison to the many thousands of dollars they could have made just replacing perfectly fine trans parts, or even: some shops would have charged for the trans rebuild only to have just fixed the power lead and I would have been none the wiser. Since then I have used them for various other high performance projects and service. Every time the RESULTS are impeccable. When Chad, the owner, is not already helping another customer, he is very eager to help you actually understand the fundamentals of your questions so you truly understand what is involved with every project! During my brief wait, I noticed the owner has more certificates for training in automotive systems than I have seen for entire crews at large service shops. This explains the efficiency and expertise I have observed, but it doesn't explain the very reasonable charges! 06/10/2015 Update Sadly, Hart Automotive is gone. Happily, its owner can be found at Oakland Auto Service, 1207 W. Lusher Ave, Elkhart, IN.

I ordered an engine and was in constant contact with the owner. He was very straightforward, concerned and honest. During my travels back and forth from PA to Elkhart, I ran into car troubles with my other vehicle (timing belt broke). Both vehicles were now at Hart Automotive. Legitimate work was completed on both vehicles and within the estimated time frame of two weeks. Fair and honest prices. Both vehicles made it 9hrs back to PA with no issues. Would've been a five rating except for the cigarette/gear oil smell I'm struggling to get out of the interior of my car.

I figured it would be a day or two since there is no Subaru dealer within a 50 mile radius. I was offered a loaner. I was pretty impressed that the repair was finished by that afternoon. The mechanic, upon inspection of my car, suggested a transmission flush (odometer at 61000 and past due), new tire, and an oil change. I did add the trans flush but passed on the other stuff. No pressure tactics, just honest advice. One tiny critique: a bolt that holds the alternator belt shroud was over-torqued. Its a quirky Subaru thing but without any play in that bolt, the power steering pump will shudder at a stop or low speeds. (Bolts are meant to be tight, right?) I told you its quirky.

My appointment was for Friday -- they never even got my truck in the shop. No call, no update, nothing. Then today (Monday), I get a call saying "Your brakes are metal-on-metal, and we can't replace them." That is 100% false. I know exactly what condition my brakes are in -- they are worn, but not beyond service. That's just a lazy excuse not to do the work. Then comes the biggest joke: they tell me they can't put my tires onto my rims, even though they supposedly have a $15,000 tire machine. Are you kidding me? What kind of professional shop can't mount tires with all that expensive equipment? They fed me nothing but excuses and BS, wasted my time, and left me scrambling to get my vehicle fixed after holding it hostage for days. Totally unprofessional, unreliable, and incompetent. Avoid this place unless you like being lied to, ignored, and jerked around.
