I accidentally found this salon. I never knew JC Penny had an actual hair salon. I am happy with the outcome. Althea helped me. She took her time and made sure to protect my hair as she was working on it. I hadn't gotten my hair done in over a year because of the nightmare I went through with the last place I went to. I left the salon with highlights and my hair did not feel like a stack of hay. read more

jc penny Beauty Salon, Manager, Chris Plummer, Hayward CA. One Star is too much. I made an appointment for 2:30. 11/16/2022 with Nanette for hair cut and basic perm expecting to leave with soft curled and styled hair. This should not have cost me $158.00 and 4,1/2 hours and the first time 20% new customer discount was not available. Nanette said she had been at the Hayward store for many years. I expected her to know more. My hair was permed and blown dry and then flat ironed I requested a curling iron. She said we don't use those any more and continued with the flat iron. I am a little old white, grey haired lady of 81 years and expect to have a perm and hair cut every 3 months or so with soft curls which seems appropriate for my age group. I do not expect to leave a salon with a flat straight hairstyle after being permed. It was already flat and straight with very little curl when I came in. So it looked approximately the same no curls and little bit shorter when I left. The menu on your web site needs to be more specific as to what is included with the perm and hair cut pkg. The appointment took 4 1/2 hours, It was about 7.00 pm when I left. I usually get a hair cut and perm in 2 1/2 to 3 hours. My previous stylist has retired. After a lot of my objections approx. 15 min or so the final price was 128.00 and she agreed to use the non existing curling iron. My hair is somewhat flat with very little curl. Of course I did not leave a tip. She offered to redo free wash and set for the next time I come in. There was only a couple of employees and a very few customers, not busy at all on a Wednesday afternoon. 7 ooclock with designer or sr. designer, new clients only. *20% off any glossing service of $3 0 or more with a Designer or Sr. Designer at JCPenney Salon or The Salon by InStyle, excluding taxes, valid 11/1/22-11/30/22. New Clients Only. Offer may not be available at all Salons. One use per coupon, one coupon per customer; must be provided/surrendered at time of purchase. Cannot be combined with any other coupon or discount offer. Coupon cannot be used for payment on account. No cash value. JCPenney may refuse, or limit the use of, any coupon and/or return for any reason, including reoccurring disruptive behavior. Additional exclusions and exceptions may apply. REPRODUCTIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. First time customer in this salon. J C Penny's was my first job in the 70's. I enjoyed working there in the women's dress dept. Gracie Ann Di Coio Thanks for your attention and time to correct your services. Disregard the pretty epic nice note on the bottom. It is not appropriate. read more

I had a 12 pm appointment today with the manager to have the works done. I came in on Monday and met with Chris. I explained all the problems I was having with my hair. He said he could help and scheduled the appointment for 12 pm today. I was so looking forward to having my appointment. I arrived at the store early and did a little shopping in the women's clothing and saw Chris. I didn't disturb him because I thought he may be on his lunch hour. Around 11:45 pm I got on the escalator to go to the salon and I saw Chris near the exit of the store. I went to the salon and advised them of my appointment with Chris. The lady paged him and heard nothing back from him. Again at 12:45 pm a second employee paged him and still no response. At 12:15 pm it was obvious he was had forgotten my appointment and had not checked his schedule. I informed the employee that I was leaving and this was so unprofessional. Especially since his own staff could not reach him. I would give this business a minus one star. I am so discussed now. My appointment was even confirmed through text message. There no excuse for this. I don't even think he was even in the store that's why his staff couldn't reach him. read more

Completely unprofessional business practices. I scheduled an appointment a month in advance using online appointment scheduling, and not only did the online portal offer and let me schedule a time when apparently the store is not yet open (10:30am on a Thursday), when I walked into the store at 11am, after waiting outside until the store actually opened, I was informed that salon was not open due to the heating going out the day prior. The issue...no one bothered to call me to let me know. Remember....I booked my appointment a month in advance! Absolutely no excuse. I should be compensated for my time and gas...I live 45 mins from Hayward. read more

Gloria is fantastic. She knows what will look good and works with your hair. I highly recommend her.

I give Gloria 5 stars, but the salon only gets 4. Gloria can take any picture off Pinterest and make it a reality. She does an awesome job on my A-line cut every time! And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. They have reasonable prices for hair products. My only complaint is that the salon itself looks run down and there isn't a high-end salon feeling. But I keep going there because Gloria is the best! read more

This place sucks sooo bad! Today was literally the 4th time that I made an appt and when I got there the front desk said I have no appt. I'm going back to JC Penny Pleasanton where it's cleaner, less ghetto, and there's no problems with appointments. read more

What is up with the prices? I paid 170 just for a damn flat iron and a trim. Come on now. There are shops in downtown hayward. I recommend my sistas to do their search and avoid this place read more

The first time I came to this salon was back in 2008 when I needed to get my hair-styled for prom. The lady who did my hair (forgot her name) did my hair horribly. She put too much spray on my hair and the curls were too thick. I paid around $50. The second time I went to Jc Penney Salon I went to Tina to get my hair styled for Clubbing Night. Tina was very sweet and accommodated me into her schedule since I was going to be getting out late from school at 6pm. She said she would wait for me and she did :) Got my hair done just how I wanted it and didn't have to pay too much unlike the first time I went there. I will definitely be coming back to see Tina for future hair styles :) read more

Omg JCP salon... get your act together. I really wanted to give it a try despite the negative reviews. When I got there 5 mins before my appointment your receptionist informed me that my stylist - Bridgette was not there. I made an online reservation and had a confirmation. The receptionist was friendly but she asked me to wait 10 mins to see if my stylist would show up and that if she doesn't, she'll have someone else cut my hair... Sorry but I don't have the patience to wait around for that. read more

I called at 9:30 to schedule an appointment. I left a message because they weren't opened yet. I called back at 10:30 and got an answer. They were able to get me in at 2 pm with Nanette. I'm super excited because I needed a new look. I had gone to JCPenney Salon in Johnstown, PA and always received the best service with outstanding results. So I wanted to try here. I arrive at 2 on the dot. Nanette is running late because of some personal issues. I can get over that. I understand that life happens sometimes, plus she called to let me know that. She arrives. Let's get this show started. I picked out a couple of cuts that I liked from the books they have there. I apparently have the same taste because all the cuts were similar. I told Nanette she is the professional to go similar to the picture. The cut came out FANTASTIC. The color is where things went really wrong. I showed her a picture of what I wanted. It was a reddish copper in the back and blonde in the front. The back came out awesome. She had to bleach the red out of my hair. The bleach was too strong for me. I trusted her judgement, my mistake. It was burning. I told her I didn't know how much more my scalp could take. She looked at it and said it was ok. The entire time she talked to me, she bad mouthed the company. If you don't like the company, QUIT! They pay only $8/hour and she said she's worth at least $35/hour. I was quoted $95, GREAT PRICE for what I wanted. She told me that if I were in her salon, there's no way it would be that cheap. In the mean time she was on her cell phone talking to her daughter too. The top came out blonde, but I wanted the front blonde. Because of where she put the bleach and dye, it didn't turn out right. She had to put more of the red on the blonde to make it presentable. I did like the way the color turned out in the end. My scalp was bright red from the treatment. I woke up the next morning and starting brushing my hair, it hurt so bad. I came to work where I am surrounded by mirrors, and I saw some dark spots. I walked up to the mirror thinking it was just dye because that happens. That's where I noticed the blisters/welts from the chemical burn. I can't even style or brush my hair from the pain. I'm hoping my hair doesn't fall out. Nanette said she has been doing hair for 30 years, but she clearly didn't know how to handle my type of hair. I called today and spoke with management and they are making the situation right. I gave 3 stars becasue I love the cut and management seems to care about the customers. The 2 stars missing are because of Nanette being completely unprofessional and giving me a bad chemical burn. read more

I had my hair done here a few times. I usually would go to an african american women name Vicki and she does a great job. What I didn't like one time was the recepionist ( an older white lady) she was pretty rude. She needs to watch what she says to people or she will find herself in some kind of trouble, but overall my experience was good and I'm thinking about taking my daughter to get her hair done there. read more

Nope. First time I went I was satisfied. Second time around, I assumed the stylist knew I wanted the same thing because she just proceeded to cut my hair. Anywho, she cut it super short. I didn't notice how short it was till it was too late. I wanted to cry. My head shape is not meant for really short hair. She apologized and well what can you do my hair is cut. Then I get home and it looks completely uneven. Just very unhappy right now. I'll go cry myself to sleep now.... read more

I really really like the people and service. But I seriously got the worst haircut there. Asked for long layers because my hair is really curly and frizzy but ended up with short ones, and I asked for bangs but she layered my bangs too??? And they're cut in a V shape. There's no way I can fix this mess. I am very upset and cried over this because my layers are so short that they stick up and make my hair look like a dandelion. Will not be coming back for haircut services, sorry. read more

As with any salon, it depends on the stylist: I had the joy of having two great stylists here - first there was Justin (and when she went on maternity leave, she referred me to Gloria). Gloria TOTALLY ROCKS!!!! I moved away from the Bay Area, but what makes a stylist great is not someone who can cut a "style" but someone who knows "hair" and how to cut "hair". It lacks the posh of the upscale salons I used to go to in SF (but the big difference: $45 for a cut and style vs $85-$95 for a cut-and-style in SF). read more

I haven't gotten a haircut here in awhile because I've only been trimming my hair for the past year in attempt to grow it. Soon enough I know I'll be needing a stylish haircut once I grow tired of the long hair and want to get my hair dyed professionally for the first time. I will more than likely go here for that. Their prices are average, I remember paying about $40 with tip for wash, haircut and style (usually straightened my hair with the Chi). I usually went to the same girl but I cannot remember her name at the moment. When I call and return for a haircut and color I'll edit this and add her name. I like how this place never gets too busy so it's really relaxing and the lady who used to always do my hair took a long time on getting it cut right. I went here 2-3 times for the infamous a-line cut, but I'm definitely over that. When I decide on what I want I shall return. read more

Hate to do it but I don't like waiting over a hour for a late stylist. My stylist told me to come in at 9am, she would wait out front for me. I waiting until JC Penny opened at 10 walked in to the salon to find out she wasn't here. They told me she was running late, so I waited 1 her and 15 min. Ugh! read more

Great staff and knowledgable stylist', I would reccomend this place to anyone I know.

I got a wild hair (no pun intended) to get my hair done on Christmas Eve. I guessed the only place that would be guaranteed to be open and have availability would be the salon in Penney's. I found that they have online appointments so I made a appointment the night before for a 10am appointment for Balayage and a cut. I showed up at 10am and the what would be where a series of conundrums would start. Online appointments are very new to the salon so I wasn't entirely expected. It took a bit bit and a couple people for them to find me. The system allowed me to schedule an appointment with Shirley, who doesn't do color. And the system had booked me for an hour for the cut and highlights. I can't say enough though about how Shirley tried to accommodate me. She ran around to every stylist there to see if someone could take me. Everyone was busy. She told me there was someone coming in at 11 though so I elected to wait. It was already 10:30 anyway. Gloria got in, had an appointment but told me should could take me in 30 minutes. I elected to wait. About 11:45 she was ready for me. I told her I had scheduled an appointment for Balayage and a cut. She estimated 2.5-3 hours. She helped me pick my color (they have two options for vibrant colors) and then consulted me about what I was asking for. She explained that while she could do what I was asking it would look unhealthy. She suggested we add large chunky color rather than color an entire layer with red. My hair wouldn't lift so so much time was lost there. She offered me drinks and cookies. I read a book while waiting for my hair to lift. After an hour my hair finally lifted enough. The salon manager rinsed me and then I got my trim. Gloria asked if I had layers. I said yes but they'd grown out. I asked for layers to be added back. Then we started color. That was quick. Washed again and started blow drying at 3:45. Since I had been there since 10, I was hungry and going stir crazy and I was supposed to be somewhere (over an hour away) at 5. I didn't have patience to wait for my hair to be dried and styled at that point so I ran out at 4. For the color, Gloria did a great job. I got black and vibrant red underneath. The trim was okay but I didn't get layers. So after that long fiasco, it cost me $120 for all that color and the cut. The Bayalage alone ANYWHERE else STARTS at $150-$180 so I'll definitely go back. Next time I'll call to schedule with Gloria and I'm sure it'll go more smoothly. read more

About a week ago I went to get my hair lighten because I didn't want to go through the hassle of doing it at home (I've gone to cosmetology for couple months) first thing, the lightning process wasn't the issue. She tested a color strand on my hair while it was still wet....which we know hair doesn't take color that way. The problem was the hair cut (I already have a long pixie cut) I wanted a trim basically & showed her a very simple picture. Yet I could tell she wasn't confident yet she still continued. She asked the older stylist to help start the cut (a very basic pixie cut) & the older stylist start chopping the long pieces off the top of my CROWN to the point where it looked like a buzz cut..she didn't cut little by little (what you as a stylist should start as) but nope they continues cutting all the hair on the top of my crown off...at that point I told them that I'm going to stop there...everything was doing very half assed.. I ended up doing my color at home. The cut will grow back but it's so upsetting ...the pic I showed SEVERAL times was nowhere near that short either. It was basically a trim I showed... read more

If I could give a zero star I would for the stylist that cut my sons hair. This was my first and last time I will ever set foot their. It was very unprofessional of the stylist to blame my son that it was his fault when I know and saw that my son is good in letting people cut his hair.In my opinion that lady is in the wrong profession and she should go back to where she got her certificate to cut hair and take a few more classes. read more

. I had heard good reviews about some of the hairdressers at this specific salon, so I called to schedule an appointment and they confirmed a few hours later. I was SO excited to finally cut my hair after a few years of growing it and only trimming the edges. When I got there the next day, the hairdresser who was supposed to cut my hair (not going to name names) was still with a customer. Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind waiting, I know some haircuts take longer than others. Finally one of the other stylists offered to cut my hair instead. I didn't know any better, so I said sure. She seemed nice, she was asking questions about what style I wanted, how short I wanted it. It looked like she knew what she was doing at first but the end result was TERRIBLE. I should have known she was new to haircuts when she took a long time figuring out which razors/tools to use for layers and when she kept looking around at her co-workers (maybe to see if they were available to help her? I don't know). It was supposed to be a simple layered haircut but it turned out choppy, uneven, and just plain bad. At one point I was telling her not to cut my hair a certain way because it would look weird and unnatural but she did it anyway. I appreciate her trying to help me since she saw me waiting for a while but I feel like she shouldn't be doing haircuts alone yet. She didn't even know how to blow-dry regular straight hair, she was just sort of brushing my hair and pointing the blow dryer wherever my hair still seemed damp. 1 star for being considerate and for the salon looking professional and clean, but the actual haircut was just disappointing. read more

The worst!!!! I booked an appt. 3 weeks before my sons wedding with a specific stylist that was refered to me by a friend. They called and verified the appt. the day before. When I went in the following day for the appt. they told me I'd cancelled the appt. and could not have the stylist I'd requested, but they'd get me "someone" to do my hair. I wanted the stylist I'd booked with but they said that was impossible. The person they had do my hair had never worked on "white" hair. 1 1/2 hours later I had various products in my hair, it was heavy, dull and a complete disaster!!!! Nothing at all like what I'd asked for...simple, clean and styled was all I wanted. I got plastered, dull and just hanging there. I left in tears (and they still wanted payment) and ran home to try and fix this mess before my son's wedding. I didn't have time to wash it all out and start from scratch....I did the best I could, but needless to say, on such an important day, I was crushed!!!!! RUN...DO NOT WALK FROM THIS SALON!!!!! THEY WILL RUIN YOU AND NOT EVEN CARE!!!!!! Never, Never, Never, Never, Never Again!!!!! read more
