I went to go to another restaurant I had read about, but it was closed, so I was wandering around…read morethe area that appeared to be the equivalent of Nice's Chinatown. There were several restaurants, but this very small, narrow restaurant had a lot of people and they were almost all Asian. I went in. It's proven to be a good indicator of the quality of the food in such neighborhoods. I never go by appearance in this situation. It's only narrow enough for two rows of tables and one aisle down the middle. A few girls were singing Chinese karaoke in the back, and a very friendly, smiling woman brought me the menu and took my order. When I ordered the roast duck, she asked me a question (we were speaking French) with a word I didn't know. We had to enlist the help of some students from Beijing who actually spoke English better than French and they said she was asking if I wanted my duck to have bones or not. I said I didn't care, and it came without. It was nice without, actually. The duck was moist and tasty and I got just white rice with it.

This was without a doubt the finest meal we have had in France, and it was Italian. My wife,…read moreLeslie, a francophile, even agreed. I write this on October 6, 2013 and we have been in France since September 17. We've had many a meal. Most good, a couple downright horrible. I tell you this to give you the context of this review. Also, I speak no French and my wife's still working on boning up her French from high school and college courses taken thirty years ago. The venue was clean and crisp; linen napkins and table cloth; comfortable seating; blown glass and iron chandelier; blown glass sconces; Diana Krall softly played in the background. A truly elegant setting. The wine was very fairly priced; a hearty yet smooth red local appellation; the lady had legs. Yummy. The starter was a tomato and buffalo mozzarella. The tomatoes were chilled just right. And the mozzarella was heavenly. Cold and creamy; a soft and luxurious treat to the tongue. My wife had the veal piccata. A generous side of linguini Alfredo came as a surprise. My fork snuck across the table for a taste of both. The veal was very tender, well trimmed and delicious. The linguini was just right to accompany the acidity of the piccata. The portions were generous such that food was left on the plate. We lamented the American custom of asking for a box to take the left-overs. I asked our waiter for a recommendation between the mushroom risotto and the carbonara. I secretly wished for the risotto since I had a decent carbonara in Paris. My wish was granted. The risotto was so good it is difficult to describe. The woody and earthiness of the mushrooms caused me to consciously leave each bite on the tongue a bit longer to savor it. There were a few cherry tomatoes that added some acidity. The risotto was wonderfully creamy and the rice had just the right texture. As with Leslie's plate, I couldn't finish. We passed dessert because we were full, but the menu looked great. The service was excellent. Our waiter was a very friendly and kind man who presented the food expertly which greatly added to our enjoyment of the meal. I don't know why this restaurant is unrated. We had a splendid experience and great food and drink. Leslie and I avoid returning to a restaurant while vacationing because we want to get as diversified experience as possible. But in this case, we have both agreed that we will have one more meal at Restaurant Rolando before we leave Nice for Rome. Finally, the prices were very, very fair. The total check with service included was 79,00 €.

The restaurant is beautiful and definitely has that upscale Cannes energy people probably look for when visiting. Also have to give credit to the staff because the service was genuinely excellent. There were a ton of people working and everyone was friendly, attentive, and happy to help without feeling overbearing. The food also came out surprisingly fast which was appreciated. We tried the truffle pita with truffle cream and parmesan along with the lobster linguine with creamy bisque. Everything was good and well prepared, but personally I just didn't leave thinking about the dishes afterward. Nothing was bad at all, I just think the atmosphere and service stood out more to me than the food itself
