I went to Pimento's to see what Carlow had to offer regarding Tapas. I am from Bilbao, Spain and…read morewas travelling through Ireland with three of my friends. From the outset we could tell that this restaurant was far from "Tapas". Sliders on a menu??? Are you kidding me. We had the Patasas Bravas, it was cold and extremely dry. After we ordered Gambas al Ajillo (Garlic Shrimp) and my god what I saw was a sight to behold. Buried beneath were 3 thick, curly, dark hairs. I notified the waiter immediately and she just laughed at me saying she'd bring me another, as if 3 hairs meant nothing, no apology or anything. I took this up with the lady manager when paying and she tried to tell us that they were our own hairs. This place is a sad excuse for a Tapas bar.

The two connecting dining rooms are amazing and cozy, with a big bar counter at the back, wine racks and a huge assortment of whimsical objects or artwork around the place. Upstairs there's a terrace where you can fully enjoy their tapas menu and maybe even go for a cocktail. There's a set dishes menu, a smaller tapas menu and also the specials of the day, written on a big blackboard - that our hostess kindly perched on a chair in front of our table, improptu style. In both fixed menus there are many vegetarian and/or gluten free options. The wine list was interesting enough, though not perfect. I managed to find a beautiful spanish Verdejo there, so that must count for something. We were served delicious food and the only thing I can point is that my vegetarian stuffed zucchini had a bit too much cheese, but other than that everything was good and their special of the day, salmon, was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately we were both too full to try the desserts, but at least we got to to wrap our lunch up with a nice espresso.

My favourite thing was getting to eat delicious very high end food in a more casual and relaxed environment, there was nothing stuffy or pretentious about the place, which can be the case in a lot of fine dining restaurants. We sat by the window and was lovely to see out on to all the fabulous colourful barges on the canal. Will 100% be back and telling everyone about here! A+

On the Grapevine is a fantastic little wine shop that lets you choose your bottle and drink it…read moreright on the premises for only a 7 euro corkage fee. There are ample sitting spaces in the main shop as well as upstairs. They also serve food like tapas, sandwiches, and other snacks. There's even an expresso bar. The best part is that because they are a wine bar you may request a complimentary sample of a wine and then purchase the bottle and drink it right there. Many wines are even 20% off or right around €10 for a bottle. We stopped in because it was raining but ended up finishing the whole bottle and even contemplated getting a second bottle but the weather had cleared so we were off to continue our sight seeing. Dangerously fun but strongly recommended.

It only holds about 15 people. But the food, coffee, and service is about as good as it gets. These people are passionate about what they do. I come specifically for the awesome vegan Caravaggio sandwich (on ciabatta). Everything is freshly made by them and unlike anything you will get anywhere else. Except maybe Italy! There are usually lots of Italian customers there, speaking Italian. This is a very good sign. The place is full of interesting old books people are free to browse. A quirk is an underlying 'cat' theme. Quotes and pictures about cats all over. Hand drawn images of cats by customers also adorn the walks, as to Italian record albums. I come way out of my way to come here regularly and will continue to as long as possible. Note: their fabulous bread selection comes fresh daily from the Firehouse bakery in Delgany.
