Right behind the bar was the magazine rack. You did not have to leave your stool to retrieve a questionable magazine. Early in the morning there was a older man sitting by the front window reading the newspaper. Usually the news paper was upside down. Another older couple frequented the place and were known as Mr and Mrs America. Our group included Ivan Stotz, Dick Hessey, Jamie Liable, Dave Maegar and myself, Doug Mofle. My buddy told me that a mutual acquaintance had been scouring the area within a half hour to find the best hamburger. "Interesting," I said, "what did he find?" "Well," my buddy replied, "he has it narrowed down to two places. The first is the Lucky Dog in Volga." "That's where we had lunch," I said. "The other is Lemke's in Aurora," he replied. "And that's where we had dinner." (My parents have been retired for years and share the passion for a great burger. This was their go to spot as well. Make no mistake. The cover does not match the book here.) The Lucky Dog is relatively small. It is a bar and grill. The dining/ bar area is is functional, adorned with the typical football schedules and happy hour announcements, but I wouldn't say cluttered. Everything appeared to be clean and well-maintained. Service was cheery and brisk. I ordered a Cowboy burger, mi esposa ordered the (basic) hamburger, add cheese. There are a couple of reasons I'm giving this place a five star review. The first one is that, other than this place being located in Aurora, I couldn't find anything wrong with it all. Clean restrooms, comfy seats, decent beer selection, kitchen looked clean. And the only reason I dislike it being in Aurora is that I can't get the delicious burgers they sell here more often. I suspect that the beef in the sandwich was either hand ground or at least very high quality and hand cut from a roll of beef (if you know, you know). I would guess it was a little over a 1/3 lb patty, but as it was cooked immaculately to a touch under medium and lost zero moisture to the flat-top, hard to say. The bun was tidy and perfectly performed its function of allowing me to hold the sandwich without making a mess. It was fresh and pillowy. The onion ring was crispy and delicious. The barbeque sauce rich and intoxicating. To an extent, there was a factor of more is less. The sandwich was neither too big nor too small. Just tidy, efficient and a bulls-eye shot to my happy place. You don't have to rewrite culinary history when you make a menu item. You need to honor its ingredients, and this sandwich absolutely did just that. Thank you so, so much Lucky Dog.

One of the signature drinks is called the "Backpacker." You can get it by the pitcher and save some dough. I've tasted it and it's surprisingly delicious (despite the florescent green hue), but I never order it anymore because it's made with Mountain Dew and gives me gut rot. :) If your stomach can handle some soda, try this drink! It's kind of a "local delicacy." I believe they make it in different flavors now, but I have not personally seen or tasted this.

When we walked into the place, I quickly realized my assessment was wrong. Jim's Tap is a Medieval-themed bar at least in the decor. It was sort of like being in an episode of "Game of Thrones" only with no blood or boinking or that punk Joffrey. I wish Joffrey was there. I would kick him in the nuts and then punch him in the face. And then start yelling: "Who's on top and who's on bottom now!?" But I digress ... No servers were dressed in any sort of steward or beer wench costume, but credit is not accepted. Don't worry. You don't have to pay in gold or silver, but you do need to pay with American cash. The walls are decorated with swords. The place also is dimly lit. The tables and chairs aren't so much Medieval though ... they're more like old school lounge bar ... the chairs are comfy. I went here twice while visiting Brookings. The first time our host purchased a pitcher of a green concoction and a pinkish drink. The green was some melon mixed drink. The pinkish colored one was called, I believe, an Apple Packer. Both tasted like Sweet Tarts mixed with Pixie Stix. Not really my thing, but I guess it's nice to have the option. The second time, I had a beer. It was Monty Python's Holy Grail on tap. This is not the best beer, but it's nice to see they tried to have the bar theme incorporated into the beer list. Both nights we sat outside. It was a little chilly, but not bad in part because there is a great fire place on the patio. If you are doing hardcore parcore though, be careful of the grill. One person in our group accidentally knocked the lid off of the grill while doing hardcore parcore. We received a finger wag over it, but the server seemed to understand it was an accident. In summary, get cash. Go to Jim's. Drink. And drink some outside by fire.
