Pretty much saved my life. His team and the nurses and other staff at HHI hospital are simply the best and on Christmas Day besides.

New River Veterinary Specialists - How swollen the day after new river

The vets and staff are beyond caring and attentive, and the knowledge base is outstanding. I highly recommend!

At around 11 p.m., I decided to take her to New River to have her checked out. When we arrived, we were taken back pretty quickly. The woman who brought us into the room was incredibly sweet and treated Kalabar very gently, which I really appreciated. The doctor then came in and examined her. He mentioned shaving the area so he could get a better look at what was going on. I said, "Great, let's do that." However, that never happened. Instead, he told me that we could have bloodwork done to check her blood because there was a possibility that she had been bitten by a venomous snake. He said she seemed fine and that the bloodwork wasn't necessary. We were ultimately sent home with gabapentin. The next day, I was at work with Kalabar because I work at a doggy daycare. I kept her in a room where I could check on her throughout the day. Her leg had swollen to nearly 10 times the size it had been the night before. At that point, I took her to Lowcountry Veterinary Specialists. They even asked me why New River hadn't shaved the area to get a better look. Honestly, I didn't have an answer. Lowcountry shaved the area, and that's when they discovered that Kalabar had actually been bitten twice. She was then sent to Carolina Veterinary Critical Care, where she had to stay for about five hours so they could monitor her and administer antivenom. What makes me so upset is that Kalabar went through so much pain and could have potentially been treated sooner. A simple step like shaving the area to properly examine the wound, or doing the bloodwork to check her condition, may have helped identify how serious the situation was sooner. By the time she received the care she needed, she had bruising that had spread up her back leg. As her owner, it is incredibly difficult to know that she was suffering and that more could potentially have been done during our first visit. I am incredibly grateful to Lowcountry Veterinary Specialists and Carolina Veterinary Critical Care for taking her seriously and giving her the care she needed. I just wish New River had done more from the beginning.
