There is a facemask mandate in Jacksonville, FL. I signed…read moremy son up for a 2 hour driving lesson as a refresher and to check his current level after not driving for so many weeks during the quarantine and remote learning in high school. The man came, picked up my son in the driveway. My son was wearing a facemask when he walked out my door and wore it the entire lesson. The instructor from Able Driving Center did not wear a mask for two hours inside an enclosed car. He did not even ask if my son wanted him to wear one! I sent a message requesting a manager online and received a callback from someone at Able Driving Center. She told me: 1) they have masks from the company in the cars at all times and can put them on. 2) they don't put on the masks unless the customer asks them to. I said perhaps they should have asked the customer rather than expect a teenager to take the initiative? I mean, really! The teen was wearing a mask that he never took off - how dumb do you need to be to figure out that masks are wanted??? 3) they are aware that the city mandate says they are required to wear a mask but they choose not to obey the city mandate. 4) She didn't seem to give a darn about it. Probably a science-denier and a Trumpster. I cancelled the next appointment I'd made with them and chose a different company for the driving skills test that lists on their website that masks are required and other precautionary info for customers to follow.

Instead of creating a supportive learning environment, his approach often felt intimidating. There were multiple instances where he used what came across as scare tactics toward students . Threatening to send home, raising his voice, insisting making examples out of people, telling students they don't want to see Drill Sergeant Vaughn, and creating unnecessary pressure rather than actually helping anyone improve. Learning is already stressful with it being nights and some students have work schedules, but this kind of environment makes it worse. Instead of deescalating, it felt like students were hesitant to speak up out of fear of being singled out. That's not how a classroom should operate, especially in a program where people are trying to build skills and confidence. Beyond that, communication and overall organization at the school didn't help much either. It often felt like concerns weren't taken seriously, and there wasn't much effort to address the environment being created.
