Enter the bank vault!
Edita G.

I always admire the idea of repurposing buildings, and this cafe is actually in a place formerly used as a bank, with its vault still "in tact" inside, with additional seating installed right there. I walked in on a Sunday morning and had to wait a looong time since it was only one barista (poor girl!) to serve a line of people (looks like there's nothing even remotely close to a good coffee place besides Java in this town). We ordered sandwiches (which get heated in a panini press) and an iced Mocha, which tasted more like an iced cocoa, but in defence of being understaffed on a weekend,I wasn't too upset about the situation. Lovely place to visit when in the area.

Incorrect Business Hours

Received the worst experience in My hometown this weekend. After waking up with purpose to fulfill the Brides request, I headed to this establishment to purchase coffee for the bridal party on yesterday. I searched for the local coffee shops in the area after noticing CC's and Starbucks were quite a distance. Considering I waited an hour for coffee I didn't receive, I imagine driving 20 min to Starbucks instead of 5 minutes here would have still saved Me so much time and energy. As a business owner, I try to refrain from leaving negative commentary but instead offer suggestions and constructive feedback as a patron. I'm an Iraqi Air Force veteran. I will literally give the shirt off My back and the shoes off My feet. I thank God for growth bc after being lied on and having the police called on Me I definitely wanted to give Karen "the owner" another version of Myself. One of the two employees whom waited in the parking lot with Me for at least 30 min was gracious enough to let Me know that They did not open until 8. I kindly asked for a POC in regards to the business hours. I was given the phone number but before calling I decided to just walk back up the side walk near the entrance door which I've posted that also says 7 am Monday - Saturday. I took two good steps before the rude Mulatto attempted to stop Me from walking towards the front of the building as parking is in back. She Yelled at Me We don't open until 8. I said ok I've waited this long to Myself I can wait a few more minutes. I approached the door and it was open. So I proceeded inside although it was now about 10 minutes until 8. Ms Mullato then yells again with tude We don't open until 8. Fair enough. Some business will allow You a few minutes before open time especially if They've already opened the door. Nope not this rude ass immature mut. She laughed and giggled as I stood outside patiently waiting. Within 5 minutes Opelousas Police department had been summoned by the business owner Karen. The officer got out of His unit and advised Me that there was a call that someone was being loud and banging on the business door. I never shouted at anyone or raised My voice for that matter as I mentioned to the officer. He was very polite and said He go inside first to see what was going on. Before He could walk inside, M n M peeps Her head the door and says yes officer could You come inside please? I then realize this little girl is going to lie through Her crooked teeth. That's exactly what happened. He walked back out and said that the owner had decided not to serve Me and guess what I didn't want to give Her one penny of My money but it was not about Me. What lead up to the police comes next. During the phone call conversation that took place after being put out bc it wasn't 8 She repeatedly asked within the "first minute" this is My personal number how did You get it. My only question was good morning, are You the owner of Java? She then told Me stop yelling at Her as I was not yelling but projecting My voice to be heard as I had already waste enough of My time and energy. She finally said yes and I proceeded to ask Her if She was are not only does Her door have inaccurate information but so does Google and Yelp. The bih tells Me well Covid caused Them to change Their hours. Totally understandable BUT ma'am I've literally told a min of 6 customers They're not open , don't get out Your car I've been waiting almost an hour. She then tells Me well if You'd like to make a donation in the RUDEST MANNER You are welcome to do so. Umm LADY YOU HAVE GOTTEN ENOUGH OFF OF MY ANCESTORS BACK. did not include that sentence in the phone call. What I did say is Ma'am I've only called this morning to simply inform You that Your employee is rude but most importantly You business hours are incorrect and has inconvenience not only My a m but many of other Opelousas citizens as well. Anywho long story short I went to the nice coffee / ice cream bar and it was honestly everything. I'm not here to tell You where to spend Your money but I am here to expose Karen and to let Her know just bc I'm not a caucus or fair skinned Mullato, had on a tignon like Madam Laveau and pajamas doesn't mean I'm any less important than You. You tried the right one!

Not weighted properly

The coffee is expensive enough. Please weight out properly. Coffee should be weighted without the bag or bag should be zeroed out.

Cute sign!

Java Square is such a darling little coffee shop, and such a breath of fresh air from the chain coffee shops that riddle the cities! It is beautifully decorated, and very clean as well! There are plenty of tables to sit and stay away, chat, or work/study too! The employees are so sweet, and they make a meeeaaannn vanilla latte. So deliciously sweet and creamy! In addition to coffee, they have a plentiful selection of options to nibble on. Stop in to patronize a small business by visiting Java Square. Your tastebuds will be happy!

Great place to sit and recharge yourself - especially with a nice hot cup of macchiato.

This is a little gem I found walking around downtown Opelousas that I plan on frequenting during my stay here. It just opened a few days ago and so far they are doing a great job! The building was previously used as a bank, and you can tell by the bank vault directly across from the entrance. The bank vault is now a little serenity or reading room with comfortable furniture and cool coffee-related decorations. If you're a Twilight Zone fan like I am and you've ever wanted to feel like Burgess Meredith in the episode "Time Enough At Last", this is the place to do it! The coffee was quite delicious and affordable. I didn't try any of the food but plan on doing so on my next visit. The staff is very friendly and the owner's kids were hanging out too giving it a fun, family friendly vibe. The shop has free wifi so I plan on going back to make the cafe my study spot, especially because it has really great lighting. I think Java Square is a great addition to downtown and an interesting repurposing of space. I'm wishing this place much success!

The best coffee shop that Opelousas has to offer. There is another one in town but their coffee taste chemical acidic. Java Square also offers delicious soups, sandwiches and pastries. It's my go to place to relax. Very peaceful and great customer service.

We drive from Denton, Texas to New Orleans often, and try to stop here each time. It's a nice road trip break, right on a downtown square.

Beautiful setting & pleasant, efficient baristas. Great pioneering effort for downtown. SARAH'S presence remains in the building. Steve.
