My favorite traveling companion (my wife!) and I stopped in for breakfast this morning, on the way home from a road trip. The place is in an old house, and we ate in what appeared to have once been the living room (side note; it was a real "bathroom" that even has a shower in it!). The women working there were all very friendly, and the food was on point. My wife had scrambled eggs and sausage, and I had a three ingredient omelette (mushrooms, onion, ham), and both dishes came with some fruit and a couple of Jacks, which is their version of beignets. Add in a couple of coffees, and it was a little over twenty bucks after tax. A nice place to visit again, if we're ever in Tappahannock again. read more

The inside was laid out like a house which made some areas feel sort of awkward like you are in the middle of the room hit that's ok. Cute little coffee house! Delicious avocado toast and hash browns, the hash browns and are more like home fries. My friend got the omelette also very good. We tried the "jacks" are like, little pillows of funnel cake. Glad we stopped by! Highly recommend. read more

I'm going to start this off by saying, this place has amazing food. This review has absolutely NOTHING to do with any meal I have had here. Here we go, we decided to eat here today, because I had to work a half day, and my fiancé was going to be in Tappahannock around the time I'd be rolling through from work. It's usually packed, but today it was kind of slow, probably due to the time of day. We seated ourselves and ordered coffee. I asked for half and half, which the server took FOREVER to bring over, after I reminded her. I had to grab silverware off the table next to us in order to stir my coffee, since we didn't get any when we sat down. We both ordered omelets, which come with hash browns. I am a diabetic and my fiancé is watching her carb intake, so we asked them to hold the hash browns. After what seemed like an eternal wait, both dishes were delivered, with the server saying "sorry, I forgot to tell them to hold the hash browns. When we were done, we just got up and headed to the front to pay, since the server couldn't be bothered to bring the check. Mind you, once again they were NOT busy, and had at least three servers working. Maybe I'm just being picky, but a disinterested server, who doesn't get an order right, and can't bring something as simple as half and half and a check, definitely earned her $1.00 tip, and that was being generous, and mainly because she did actually bring the food. The food here is consistently good, but the service is consistently BAD. Too many young girls who obviously have other priorities than their jobs. It's a very hippy type place, and it's obvious that they probably protest Trump on their days off, but in a town that lacks any quality eateries, they would do well to improve their serving staff. read more

The sausage breakfast burrito was one of the tastiest that I've ever had! The bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit, sooo good! The bacon was crispy and the egg to cheese ratio, a delight! The iced lavender coffee, amazing! And that blueberry bread pudding! Delectable! And the fruit cup with mint sprinkled throughout was a refreshing way to end a meal. I enjoyed every bite! Why this restaurant is popular? Or only I am wrong? Our food came almost one hour after ordered. So if you have enough time and just want to chat as long as you want it's ok. But I'm not. The only thing wrong with Java Jacks is the it's described as a Coffee House. Though the coffee is first class, it is so much more than that. My wife and I stumbled upon it on one of those "wandering around" trips we occasionally take from our home in Glen Allen (roughly 50 miles southwest). Today we visited for a second time--this time on purpose. Big picture: Java Jacks looks to be a house converted to a restaurant so the scale and feel is particularly homey. Today, we sat on what, originally, would have been the wrap-around front porch--now a bright, windowed room. The walls are decorated with vintage porcelain signs and the tables are draped with colorful fabrics. The service is just what you'd want it to be, attentive and friendly. The food, (I can speak for the fish and chips) was fresh, hot, and perfectly cooked--golden brown, crispy fillets and waffle-cut fries served in a paper bag--accompanied by a side order of homemade slaw (guessing on that) and a tangy tartar sauce. I hate to sound so effusive, but I get such a charge out of places like this--small businesses that seem willing to spend the time and energy necessary to do things well, to pay attention to the details, and to do it all with a smile. While in town for some volunteer work, I popped in hear after reading all the rave reviews. Unfortunately, my experience was just okay, not as stellar as many so other people's. It took a while for me to be noticed and then it was only after I directed the staff's attention to me -- the hostess had taken notice of a couple who were regulars and was chatting with the; I felt a bit disregarded. Then she just kind of waved me into the cafe and went back to her conversation, which was a little off-putting. The waitress I had was pleasant enough; some might call her a little distant but I, personally, don't mind that. I got the Chesapeake eggs which includes poached eggs, crabmeat, Hollandaise all atop the cafe's signature "jacks" which are a dense-ish Italian bread. You can also get them served with powdered sugar like a beignet. They're very tasty that way - I got three to go. While my breakfast did contain some beautifully poached eggs and a more than generous helping of crab, it was all quite bland to me. It needed salt and pepper, at the least, and the Hollandaise had virtually no lemony goodness. I was disappointed, a bit. Also, the fruit "side" was four 1" cut pieces of fruit and a half of a strawberry. Come on now. That's a garnish, not a side. If I was in the area I'd try it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Passing thru the area and stopped for lunch. This is a very cute restaurant. All tables have cloth tablecloths and there is vintage signs throughout the restaurant. Seat yourself and enjoy the charm. I had the spinach salad, minus bacon, with poppyseed dressing and also an order of sweet potato fries. The salad hit the spot and the sweet potato fries were yummy. My husband had the Eggs Chesapeake. Poached eggs, hollandaise sauce with a lot of crab meat over an english muffin. It was really good. Our server was very friendly. At first, we missed the street it is on, Virginia, it's a small street with a tiny street sign. Also, parking is in the back. Overall, we're very happy we stopped here. read more

It pains me to give this place a one star review, but today was my third visit so I can't chalk things up to a "one time thing" anymore. First off, let me say that this place is a really nice little nook in about the least likely location. You could blink and miss it as you drive by. It's a little farmhouse-turned-restaurant with a very homey feel and decor to match...it's awesome! The food has also been consistently fresh and delicious. The very first time we went, it was busy. The place is small, which isn't a big deal, but we got a table and waited a half hour for a cup of coffee. That visit took us a total of 1.5 hours...just for coffee and breakfast, despite waitresses being all over the place. But, I figured the kitchen was probably slammed with the Farmer's Market traffic so I wasn't too worried about it. Our second visit, it wasn't too busy, but the service, again, was severely lacking, and again, not due to a lack of staffing. Today was our third - and probably final - visit. There were only a few tables occupied, and the waitresses had plenty of free time, which they used to stare into their phones. We were told we could sit wherever and someone would be with us. Ok, no problem. I picked a table, which still had trash on it from the previous diners, as they all did, and just brushed it off to the side. It took one of the waitresses 3 trips past us to finally bring us menus and tell us that our actual waitress would be with us shortly. After about 5 minutes she came and got our drink order of coffee. She brought the coffee but no creamer. We asked for creamer and after 10 minutes, we finally asked again and she said "oh yeah, creamer..." and brought us a few creamer cups to split between us. I guess during that 10 minutes she was a little too concerned with what was going on on her phone to remember the little details, like, creamer. She was, after all, standing in my direct line of sight, even making eye contact a couple of times, right behind the coffee bar. After that, she took our food order. We both ordered omelets, both different, and asked that they hold the hash browns. When she brought out the food, the plates were overflowing with hash browns because she forgot to tell them to hold them, and gave us the wrong omelets. After my fiancé put the stuff on his omelet that I don't eat on mine, I cut into mine to see that they were the wrong ones. We switched and I had to eat my omelet with stuff on it that doesn't agree with me. Not only was our waitress lacking in her job performance, I find it rather disturbing - having worked in food service myself, front end and in the kitchen - that they allow their servers to come into work looking fresh out of bed and unkempt. Capri leggings with a baggy OBX shirt aren't very "I care about my job and appearance" (leggings look sloppy in any job environment unless you teach yoga), nor is unbrushed, messy hair. Overall, after the service we've had all three times we've been there, I don't think I'll be going back. It's sad, I truly do love the place, but when there has consistently been bad service over an elongated period of time, I don't see any positive change in the future. They're the only place around that serves good breakfast food, but I'll be making the drive a little further from now on to go to a place that has higher standards for their wait staff. read more

Every time we drive by, my thought is that it looks cute. Thought it was time to give it a try. Quaint inside, staff is friendly enough. Took a while to get some service. Actual waitress for our table, not so friendly. Not sure she wanted to work that day! Some of us had breakfast type food and two of us had lunch. I also wanted to place an order to go. Food took a while - quite a while. Kitchen is small. Waitress told us they were out of some things but other waitress told other table they had it as a special. Not cool. Food was okay - nothing great - once it came. Reminded her about the "to go" order. Took forever! Not sure what took so long - if it was our server or the place as a whole. Not sure if we'll be back.
