Located one block from Bourbon Street in the middle of the quarter is Java House Imports. This is a locally owned store with a varied selection of wood carved crafts for sale that are made by artists from Indonesia and New Orleans. One of the owners is usually on site and can tell you the history of any of their unique items for sale. This store is the Best place to go to for hand carved craft work and they carry everything from small wood carvings of Buddha to decorate your walls to huge 3 foot tall wood carvings of dragons that you cannot find anywhere else in the south. read more

I was shopping along Royal Street with friends and family, and we stopped in. A man came from the back and greeted us as we browsed our way to the back of the room. The was a hall leading to a back room that appeared to also have merchandise. We stepped into the hall, and the man snapped, "the back is closed!" I apologized and moved back into the main room. THEN this jerk said, " what about that made you think the back room was open? Don't you see the light was off? Did it LOOK open??" Listen, there was no sign that said Room Closed, no chain or anything stretched across the door, and in this modern age LOTS of places have energy-conserving devices that turn room lights off and on as people enter or leave a room. We immediately left. My advice is pass this place right on by. If he's an employee, he needs correction. If he's an owner, he needs a personality transplant. read more

Unless you're looking for a lecture about not going into stores unless you're 100% going to buy something then skip this store! My family and I were on vacation and visiting New Orleans for the first time. We found ourselves shopping on Royal street and going in and out of stores appreciating the beautiful artwork local artists have to offer. The pieces in the store looked interesting and when we went inside a man came from the back and stood in a hallway just staring at us. We kept browsing and he asked if there was something he could help us find and I, honestly and politely, said we were just looking (at the time I hadn't decided if I wanted to purchase anything or not). He said ok and walked to the back and came right back and proceeded to berate us about how we should never say we're just looking and instead should say we're shopping as to not imply we don't plan on buying anything and insinuated we weren't worth his time and weren't welcome if we were going to make purchase. In an effort not to reciprocate his blatant rudeness I continued to finish a circle around the store thinking he would stop once he realized we weren't going to engage, but he continued to ramble and rant to himself about how he doesn't get paid enough to deal with people who aren't buying something. Needless to say, even if I had found something I wanted to purchase I would have never given him my patronage. After looking into past reviews I see we're not the only people who have had run ins with him so I'm assuming he's the owner which is so disheartening. I'm not sure why you would own a storefront on a busy street in a town frequented by tourist and have an attitude like that. I fully recommend skipping this store and going next door to Great Artist Collective where I received superb customer service and left fully satisfied with my experience and purchase! read more

I made a couple of trips into this gallery back in Oct 2016 while on vacation in the French Quarter. The contents were exquisite examples of artisan carvings with some being religious based while others were more fanciful. I made it clear that I was only there to admire the craftsmanship but I think the owners realized I wanted to do more than look. I was really enjoying the detailed carvings of many pieces when I came across a necklace which had stones that matched my dear friend's eyes. I asked my friend of the pieces on display, which one did she admire and she instantly picked the one I liked. The owner was able to rapidly read my intentions and gave me a price while quietly setting the necklace aside in a drawer. The next day, I returned, alone, and purchased the necklace with a reasonable discount. My dear friend absolutely loves that necklace and wears it constantly. It has been the topic of many compliments and discussions. This store has a storefront on eBay and they are skilled at packaging. They could help find something by size or design that would fit a specific need. I have a wall in the house that I will be letting them occupy in the future. Stop in and be prepared to be amazed! Fabulous imported items from Indonesia as well as New Orleans' own jewelry & candles. They have hundreds of African masks, Indian scultures and beautiful, international art. I purchased a soy candle that smells absolutely fabulous. This place is a bit pricey but the quality makes up for that. I'll definitely visit this venue again! read more

Strangely rude, the owner became enraged when I asked if I could just look around. I told him it was just a way of acknowledging his presence instead of ignoring him. He lectured me about not coming in if I had no intention of buying. I said I was just passing by and his stuff looked interesting and that I hadn't ruled out buying something. He continued to lecture me about how it angered him when anyone asked if they could "just look around" and I felt uncomfortable and left. Not unexpectedly the store was empty. The stuff I saw before being encouraged to leave looked like overpriced crap from the "developing world." I'm sure none of the $ goes to the poor exploited folks who make it. I'll stick with "fair trade" You've been warned! P.S. I actually had $500 cash in my pocket that day and needed to buy gifts for 4 people. Luckily New Orleans has plenty of fabulous gift options very nearby with much better value and customer service. It is generally a very friendly welcoming town. read more

This store is wonderful. When my husband and I were staying in New Orleans to celebrate our anniversary and visit friends & family, we kept walking by this store. We wanted to go in, but thought it would be too expensive, given the high quality of goods in the store. But as we were walking back to our hotel after having dinner one evening, my husband's godmother decided that we were going in. We are so glad we did! The masks and statues were even more beautiful up close, and the prices were reasonable for the quality, especially compared to prices where we're from. The owner talked with us at length about all of the different puppets and masks, and when we told him what our budget was, we were able to haggle with him on the price of a gorgeous, stunning, and quite powerful Rangda mask. The store shipped it to our home in California, and it was well-packed, arriving in one piece with just a couple of bent pieces (the cardboard details were difficult not to bend I'm surprised there weren't more than two or three minor bends), and was certainly in far better shape than it would have been if we'd tried to carry it home on the plane. Now the mask is hanging up in our meditation room, and feels absolutely alive and protective, as it should. I would buy another piece from this store in a heartbeat, and I'm sure we'll visit them on our next trip to New Orleans! read more
