The biscuits are worth taking many home and my husband- a southern gentleman was very impressed with the flaky layers, buttery flavor and perfect texture. They were also huge and came with butter and fresh preserves. We cannot wait to return. The inside seating with AC was tough to grab but there is plenty of outside seating as well. The staff was fun and the decor is right out of a kitschy movie, music and tv museum. There are so many artifacts and displays to enjoy. A must stop on the island.

It worked out because while we waited for the food we explored the rest of the plaza. The biscuits were HUGE and overstuffed with eggs and toppings. Almost too overstuffed to eat and they broke apart as you tried. Next time I'd just get a plain biscuit with jam and skip the eggs, cheese and spinach or I'd get the biscuit and mushroom cobbler to eat with a fork.

I was seated at the bar so I got to watch them cook and prepare the meals. The service was good. Within five minutes of ordering my meal, I got my food. I ordered the French, with eggs, and a side of bacon. The food was really good. I am surprised on how fast they get the food out to you. I get there between 9:30 and 10 o'clock in the morning and it was busy. The inside was full and the outside seating was full. So if you have a group (3 or more) GET THERE EARLY. Will for sure be coming back next time I'm in Hilton Head. It's added to the lists of food places.

Lowcountry Backyard was one of those places that feels like it's been there forever in the best…read morepossible way. Quirky, unpolished, a little tucked away, and absolutely full of character. It doesn't feel corporate or manufactured at all. More like you've stumbled into somebody's lovingly chaotic backyard dinner party where the food just happens to be genuinely top-tier. The mismatched charm, handwritten feel, and warm atmosphere are part of what makes it so special. There's this brilliant contrast between the laid-back hole-in-the-wall vibe and the seriously refined cooking coming out of the kitchen. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were incredibly tender, fried perfectly, and drizzled with a lovely house-made ranch. The sweet house pickles alongside were such a good touch. We also each had a cup of she crab soup which was beautifully seasoned and packed with tonnes of crab morsels. For mains, we shared the shrimp and grits and completely understood why the recipe has won awards, including being recognised as the 3rd best in the world. The recipe is rooted in traditional Lowcountry cooking but elevated with layers of flavour that somehow still feel comforting and homemade. The grits were unbelievably creamy, and the shrimp and sausage were perfectly cooked with fantastic flavour throughout. We also split the seafood purloo with blackened grouper, and it was equally impressive. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted incredibly fresh without trying too hard to be fancy. What really made the experience though was the staff. Everyone went above and beyond. They took time to chat with us about the area, paced the courses perfectly so nothing felt rushed, and by the end we were leaving with handshakes feeling more like guests than customers. Places like this are getting harder to find. We'll absolutely be back and would recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Lowcountry food served by genuinely wonderful people.

Except for the fried green tomatoes- those were very good, dipped in blue cheese dressing (ranch was bad, tasted like plain mayonnaise with a parsley sprinkle) The pimento cheese appetizer was so disappointing! Tasted like cream cheese mixed with packaged shredded cheddar and 3 small pieces of raw red pepper; served with stale corn chips and uninspired pita. Was so looking forward to good homemade pimento cheese in the south! The grouper sandwich was sad, my friend only ate the fish and left the bun and tomatoes on the plate. The mac and cheese was even sadder, described as baked mac and cheese it was more like old leftovers, cold, separated noodles that were really dry. The shrimp blt salad- the aforementioned fried green tomatoes were the best part. The bacon was cold and floppy and kind of unchewable. It was served on wilted arugula. I'm so confused by all the rave reviews! Maybe this was a one off.

He said it was generally more of a local than a tourist place, though everyone is welcome. They share a large parking lot with a shopping plaza. It appears that there is a Publix going in soon. Also, some areas had signs about using a QR code to validate parking, but apparently those were not activated yet (and seemed unpopular with the staff). It was fairly crowded when we arrived (probably 9:30 a.m.). However, they apparently just expanded and took over the adjoining space (formerly a t-shirt shop). So though the 'original' booths and counter stools were mostly taken, there appeared to be open tables in the new space. Service was sort of tag-team; whoever walked by and noticed that you needed something tried to take care of it. That is in no way a complaint - it was an efficient system. We all ordered and had a short wait for the food, given the volume of customers. When it arrived, everyone liked their platters. I had a cheese omelet, bacon, and hash browns. All were quite tasty. The coffee was good too. Prices were reasonable. I'm not much of a 'breakfast out' person at home, but if I were on HHI for any period of time, I'd definitely go back here.

Unfortunately, the second visit was a completely different experience. After a 40-minute wait, we received a text saying our table was ready. We went inside and waited behind other guests in the designated "your table is ready" area for over five minutes, only for the owner to tell us she had given our table away. She then proceeded to clear another table while we continued to wait. There were several open tables, including the booth we had sat in the day before. I mentioned that it was our anniversary and asked if we could sit there. The owner told us no because it was reserved for a larger party. However, throughout our entire meal and until we left, no one ever sat at that booth or any of the other open tables. To make matters worse, another party of four later asked to move to that exact booth and was allowed to sit there. We also ordered specialty coffee drinks that were quite expensive, but they didn't arrive until after our food was served. Then, while eating, I bit into the seed that had been left in the avocado. It was especially disappointing because our first visit had been so positive. We chose to come back to celebrate a special occasion, but the poor communication, inconsistent treatment of guests, and issues with the food and service left us frustrated. Unfortunately, what started as a great first impression turned into a disappointing anniversary experience. We expected much better, especially from the owner.
