I went to Java for a coffee just a matter of hours ago, so I thought I'd see what Yelp had to say about it. I enjoyed my coffee very much indeed, but I wasn't expecting five Star reviews! Further investigation has shown that Java has been assessed as a waiting area for Oxford Road station, and in those terms I couldn't agree more, it's a better café than one could possibly expect to find within a minutes walk of the platform. I also thoroughly agree about the coffee, which is nice and strong. None of that milky Starbucks lark. However, it's a bit boring inside, with one glass front and a uniform set of furniture. For the big five stars in my opinion you'd have to be looking at a little more, especially with some of the coffee shops Manchester has to offer, for example the nearby Trof or Love Saves the Day in the Northern Quarter. Still, in the immediate area it's the best coffee you can get. It may also be useful to note that their coffees are much nicer than those of the Cornerhouse Café and Bar, so if you're thinking of meeting friends before a film or have time to waste before one, then I'd recommend popping around the corner to here rather than having one at the Cornerhouse itself. Also, if you find you've got unexpected time to waste and you haven't got a book to occupy your coffee time, you can watch TV here which usually shows the news, and makes you feel better about being alone....

Coincidences like this, where an accomplished, independent coffee shop such as Java should share its boundaries with the iconic Cornerhouse, restore my faith in the goodness of this world. Thanks to the student who did that experiement yesterday at the Uni of Manchester and caused all of Sackville Street to be cordoned off, I got to visit Java for the first time ever. I got a capuccino and I was impressed straightaway by a very little gesture from the barista. He asked me if I wanted chocolate sprinkles on my coffee. I don't like chocolate sprinkles on my capuccino and this little kind gesture from the barista was very touching. The cafe has character, lots and lots of it and manages to be away from it all, despite being in the thick of it. As Jonny mentioned, it's great for sitting inside and outside and people watching. However, the ultimate verdict about the usefulness of a coffee shop lies in the coffee. As far as Java goes, the proof is in the pudding (or coffee, in this case). My capuccino had great aroma and was very well balanced. The coffee was rich and strong without being overpowering, whilst the milk gave it that hint of sweetness without dilluting the overall flavour of the coffee. A few more trips and I might upgrade Java to a 5*. As with everywhere else, I sincerely hope they continue to maintain these levels of service and quality. As things stand, I am definitely going back!

For me, the mention of childhood holidays brings back memories of being pulled out of bed at 3am to beat the motorway traffic on the way to the airport/ferry port, getting there at 5am and then sitting playing Tetris on my Gameboy for the next 5 hours until the departure of the plane or ferry. Unfortunately I seem to have inherited the 'must leave several hours early' trait from my Mum and even though I live no more than a 30 minute bus ride from Oxford Road Station I often find myself with at least 30 minutes to kill here. The platforms are cold and the waiting area seats around 10 people, so Java is a much better place to kill time. In my opinion the coffee sold by this little chain is actually much nicer (and importantly stronger) than that sold by the larger chains. It's possibly a little bit cheaper too, which is strange seeing as railway station prices are almost always inflated. The sofas are comfy, and you can sit outside if you fancy a cigarette with your flat white. The music is relaxing, but is importantly not annoying elevator music. The staff are really really friendly, even if it is early on a Sunday morning. You can also catch up with the news on the TV screens, if you're not too busy watching the commuters popping in for their morning caffeine fix or those running past the window with the hope of making the 09.46 to Blackpool North.

I started having Java coffee years ago. I went to work by train every morning from 2008 and I always went to grab a coffee when the train was delayed or cancelled. It's just such a lovely little spot for commuters. I love everything about this little Café: news broadcasting on TV, the cosy interior design, Hollywood inspired poster and flyers. I remembered the typical rainy time when I was sitting inside Java reading a metro and having a croissant with a cup of latte to make up the fact that my train had been cancelled and waiting time for the next one is 30mins. I also purchase the bagged coffee for friends who are in love and no longer in Manchester anymore. It becomes the typical Manchester present from me to beloved friends. A friend of mine who is a graphic design had paid a huge compliment on the logo design when she saw the take away cup. Although, my home is just a stone throw away from the shop and I still stock the coffee and the mugs from the store. I introduce this little café to many friends and colleague and everyone fell in love with Java instantly and becomes a regular to the café as well. I love the flat white the most. This is the perfect combination of the aroma from the coffee bean and fresh milk. I also like the iced coffee and the wines there. The wine selection is excellent and with very reasonable price.

Stopped by to pick up a quick latte. Quick friendly service. The place had a nice cozy feeling.

You must admit that's good latte art!

I took up residence in the dimly lit back area, where the cheerful waitstaff promptly took my order of a blood orange hot chocolate made with almond milk (!) The drink came out frothy and light, with a cloud of chocolate-dusted milk foam atop subtle, smooth chocolate. No bitter or artificial aftertaste. While bopping along to the background music and working on my laptop, I was informed that Leaf would close early at 19h instead of 20h, so I seized the opportunity to order dinner as well: the jerk lamb rump, and an order of jasmine pearl tea. The waiter helped me verify that the lamb was free of dairy, and soon I was chowing down on succulent roast lamb and garlicky roast beans. The mango jam was a perfect accompaniment to the meat, but I found the coconut/coriander rice too mushy to my taste. It helped me to imagine them as mashed potatoes instead, haha. The tea was sensuously fragrant, and I welcomed the scented fog clouding my glasses. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I might return for brunch or tea - Leaf is truly a serene, wonderful establishment.

They never get my order right! I ordered 3 breakfast meals,…read morea box on 10 timbits, and a doughnut via drive thru in bury new road Manchester. As I was in a rush, I wasn't able to check my order but, I asked the staff member serving me, "Is everything I ordered in the bag?" as it seemed small for what I ordered. The staff member replied, "Yes, it is all in the bag.". I believed her and drove off. I only realised when I reached my destination that the box of timbits and all the sauces were missing. Honestly, terrible service, as this isn't the first time my order hasn't been correct via drive thru. Otherwise the food is delicious and location is OK.

It also had a drive through and the website says it is open 24 hours, however, i can not vouch for this so i shall just assume its right. I decided to go into the branch, as i needed the toilet, so didn't try the drive through. On first arrival it looked very nice, lots of glass, lots of natural light, lots of space and it wasn't anywhere near to capacity. Considering it was after midday when i visited, this was a good thing. The store was very clean, I got served and finished very quickly and got everything I wanted to get so this is all good. Its a very nice store. If i was to have any criticisms about the store, my only one would be its location. the mile drive down from the Manchester arena wasn't the best, its one of those where (not meaning to offend) I made sure my windows were up and doors were locked. Lots of store openings which seemed dodgy as the smaller shutters were up and were probably selling niike clothing (as in knock off, wasn't a mis spell). However when i was inside waiting for my brother to order, i noticed a Deliveroo rider coming in to collect an order, so when i can finally move up to Manchester, i would more than likely just get someone else to bring it to me so I don't lose a kidney on my way there. its a nicer store than Bury and a lot bigger but I would probably go to the Bury one more due to the surrounding area. I ordered the french vanilla (which I'm still not 100% sure what it is .. so gonna say its a hot choc) and i got the reindeer doughnut, the maple cream and the iced topped crueller. All very nice

Unfortunately time has not served this place well…read more Deciding to meet up before an event for some breccy I was not quite prepared for the upcoming events. The decor is still quite homely however the seating is still very close, to a point where my friend could not even sit opposite me due to the narrow gap between the chair and table. Embarrassment set aside I went to grab some menus to find there was none. I was informed by a waitress that I had to read off the wall..so for ease I took several pictures of the menu to enable my friend to browse with ease. The menu was limited, I mean when I think of breccy I imagine eggs to be present at the very least. But no this was eggless, baconless with just options of toast, avocado, and nothing inspiring really..also there were NO PRICES. Walking up to the till I was acknowledged by a grumpy guy. Perhaps he needed a Smile latte. Anyway I ordered a cold brew along with the avocado on toast, paying extra for some additional smoked salmon. After choosing what fresh bread I wanted, he slapped me with a £12 bill.. I was gobsmacked.. Returning to my seat I reassured myself " This is going to be the best avocado on toast ever". So the cold brew arrived with a fresh piece of orange floating in it. It was pleasing to note that the brew making is still top notch. Now the food itself.. this arrived on two pieces of toast, half a pear sliced on each piece with a sliver of smoked salmon. This was dressed with a light mixture of chili and lemon. My friends beans and toast was deconstructed, she had to make it up herself...this was I think £6-8 ...for beans on toast.. I found my victuals tasty enough but could not justify the price, £5.99 would have been more realistic at best. Anyway overall the service was poor, the lack of important details such as no physical menus, napkins, prices, inquiries if the food was okay and lack of logical seating. I might pop in for a coffee to take away but this I doubt.

It has a comforting well maintained ambience (even the basement loo!) and the staff are extremely friendly. I really like the broad wooden table in the middle of the coffee area, feels calming and comfortable to sit at! I tried the Marrakesh loose leaf mint tea which was very nice although not as good a fresh mint tea - when I return next I'll try the peppermint instead. They have some lunch in a jar meals which is a fun concept although I'm not sure the actual contents would be that exciting. But it's a nice touch, also like the jugs of water with orange slices and sugar syrup. Shops like this which contain loads of really overpriced unnecessary home items I normally just dismiss as selling tat but for some reason the stuff here entranced me, especially cushions featuring a dog saying "Bonjour" /holding a French flag in its mouth (srsly I don't know why I found this so cute) and a wire basket for £18 which I for some reason felt I really need in my life. My friend felt the same about a set of colourful plastic spoons...I don't what this place does to you but I enjoyed it!

And this time I didn't get any flipping food AGAIN, more's the pity (think next time Em, THINK), but I swear, on a Saturday around midday, it was like entering a library. Not for lack of custom, there were people dotted around, but they were all alone, reading or laptopping, and everything - was - silent. My companion and I found ourselves speaking in whispers while we awaited our order. Perhaps it was study day. This particular review is based on two items, one of which I didn't experience. Or at least experienced by default thanks to an occasional satisfied food noise and I myself being fed delicious morsels of sundried tomato from the ciabatta which encased... you guessed it... a meat sandwich. Salt-beef and gherkin to be exact. As you know I don't eat meat, but heck, that bread seemed awesome from the tomatoes I snaffled and my flat-hunting companion was all kinds of happy. Now, we come to the other thing. Thing two. The coffee. The oozing black nectar of the jittery gods. This was my area. I have to say, Engine House, bravo. If you can give me an early lunchtime caffeine high amidst me going back and forth between Deansgate, Castlefield and this little edge of the Oxford Road Corridor no one else sees taking in apartment buildings and living dimensions and kitchen units and such on very little sleep, then I commend you. And considering to eat that sandwich at the table would have cost a fiver alone, to take out, that and the coffee came to £4.50. Takeaway it is! Bonus points for having Anthony Worrall Thompson strawberry handsoap in the bathroom. Did you know such stuff existed? I didn't! Check my photo. It's for reals.
