I've been working on and off with Buckley Body Solutions (Michael) for about 10 months now. He really is as good as it gets. This is the best trainer in the best city - get him while you can. My biggest progress came last spring when I had a red carpet event to go to and a runway designer dress to fit into that was one size too small, and 5 weeks to make it fit. When I came to Michael with this his response was "Can you show me a photo of the dress?" To which I said "Yes - but what's the point if I can't fit into it? I told you the size." And he said "Oh. You'll fit into the dress. I just wanted to see what the cut was, so that your exposed areas are 'on point'. On red carpet day, nobody is going to notice the dress. They'll notice your body." In the end, with Michael's guidance, I went down 2 sizes and the dress actually fit like a glove. I was lying to myself, as we often do, about how much we actually need to lose. I'll post a photo of myself in the dress, you can tell me if you notice the dress... or notice my body. ;) I'm not an athlete (really) so I don't know what else to say except for he knows what he's doing and helped me look super hot. I'll end with this... if you have an event coming up, if you want to look hot for summer, or hot for anything, get this guy on your side. I was literally terrified of causing another injury or exacerbating my condition. I had worked with several trainers in the past, both at David Barton and Equinox, and even after spending a small fortune, I was always left with little confidence and "the need" to get ripped at the expense of my body. After nearly a year of my gym protest, the weight began to pile on and I missed the great energy I would feel from having a healthy workout. I knew this time, a "trainer" at my local gym wouldn't cut it, I would require an expert, or nothing short of a demi-god. I'm still not quite sure if finding Michael Buckley was pure, unadulterated luck or merely a gift from above, but I assure you, he is the best. I have been looking for a while for somewhere that does great spin classes for which I don't have to mortgage my apartment. To put it in a nutshell, after the online deal package was up, I have since gone on to buy 2 further deals (from the studio direct) and will continue to do so. I have been spinning for a few years now, as well as regular road biking, so I think I know what to look for by now. For me, I like a teacher whose class has a structure (i.e. there is some evidence of planning and thought in terms of strength, intervals, speed etc), plays good music, USES that music as a rhythm for speed, talks to you but doesn't expect you to be shouting back every 2 mins, works hard him/herself not fannying around walking around the studio, knows about posture and good form and can inspire you to push yourself. I did many, MANY classes when I was a member of NYSC (Melissa Marotta was excellent before she went on to med school) but have since found it hard to find affordable classes which are as good. I loved Flywheel but at $30 a class, it's just too costly to be doing the 2-3 classes I want to do a week. Julian Walker's studio has finally provided the solution. It's small but it's bright, clean, friendly, with a very nice changing room with a couple of private shower rooms. The spin studio accommodates about 18 people (I think) and is kept nice and cool - I HATE doing spin in heated rooms. I've done classes with Eniko and Ellie. Both are great in different ways, but I must say, I LOVE Ellie's class. She has great energy, plays great music, knows her stuff and basically ticks all the boxes in my search for a great spin teacher. She's also a circus performer in her other life! Her classes are tough but they just whizz by. I know some have complained about lack of classes, but I've already seen a few extra ones added. It is only a small studio. I haven't done their zumba classes or done any training with Julian, but he remembered my name after one visit and always greets you when you come into class. A single class is $20 - totally reasonable, but the studio seems to offering online deals, $45 for 3 classes - even better. Even though I live on the UES, it's only a quick ride down on the 6 to 33rd St, and then is literally a 2 min walk from the subway. It's definitely my favourite spin place I've found in a while. I even considered not posting this because it's only small and I kinda want to keep it to myself, LOL. So, to recap: easily as good, if not better, than Flywheel; literally half the price!
