But after spending many years at Studio C, learning the dance skills, with the help and caring of their staff, she proved to herself that she could do it. I went to PSB for most of my youth because my mom thought it would be a great opportunity for me to…read morebe able to learn to dance ballet. Now that I've grown I've recognized the harmful and toxic practices that occur in this dance studio. As an adult I have had to recognize that the moral lessons I learned at the school don't align with the claims they make on their website. I am unlearning the idea that I wasn't enough, I wasn't good enough, and that it wasn't my fault for how competitive and toxic the environment really was when I attended. Girls were constantly being pitted against one another whether it was harmful gossip or actual comments made by the staff. I'll never forget the way in which teachers would talk negatively about past dancers that had chosen to leave from the toxic environment. I was personally scolded by one of the teachers and was told that I wasn't cut out for a prestigious summer program "you should try out next year when you're strong enough". Regardless of never meeting PSB's expectations I was accepted to the program. Because that's what the art of ballet should be. Ballet should be inclusive and encouraging. Please don't send your kids to this school if you want them to endure trauma that will linger into adulthood!

The community here is fantastic! Completely non-judgmental, full of fun, down-to-earth people, and instructors who somehow make suffering in the heat actually enjoyable. I've been coming for 3 years now, rotating between hot Pilates and the classic 90-minute Bikram class (a true test of body and willpower). I started coming because I wanted to find a community that shared my values of health, fitness, and wellness. When you first walk into that hot room, it can feel intimidating, like, "Wait, I signed up for this on purpose?" But trust me, everyone starts somewhere, and you'll quickly realize you belong. Lynn and Jeff, the owners, are legends who have built something special with their three studios (Petaluma, SF, and Berkeley). I go to the Petaluma location. The vibe is great, with lots of friendly faces and the kind of heat that makes you question your life choices for 10 minutes and then thank yourself for the rest of the day. You'll walk out stronger, more resilient, and maybe a little addicted to the sweat. Just don't forget a big water bottle and a sense of humor. You'll need both!

I have been working with Darien for a little over three years now. I'd done Pilates for several…read moreyears before I started with Darien but had quit because too often I ended up with a sore back or other issue. As I discovered, it was because often Pilates is taught without the basics of the work explained and practiced. Darien is a great teacher. She is committed to teaching the classic Pilates method but also understands that we all have different bodies and abilities. I have never felt uncomfortable in her classes (I'm 59 with bad knees). I have become so much stronger since working with her. In addition her classes have become a real community. I definitely recommend checking out her classes!
