I took the train to Belém on a gloomy rainy Sunday afternoon...the tourist crowds were ridiculous, & it was pure chaos on the sidewalk, people standing in lines everywhere & other people pouring in & out of places with beverages & snacks & souvenirs. I regret it, but I kinda had to get sharp with one of the ladies trying *urgently to sell me an umbrella. I came upon this beautiful peaceful place, my only reason for the outing, & walked up to the counter, & the guy didn't have change, & I couldn't use a card. So I had to walk back down the hill, through the madness, & find something I actually wanted to buy in one of the shops for the right mathematical amount to get back three euros. I probably looked a little annoyed, but there was no way I'd be dissuaded after everything I'd read about the place, & it was an easy return to smiles with the charming dude at the desk when I showed up again with a hologram postcard of Lisbon & coins. I wandered around in the rain, through these regions that were meant to mirror Portugal's colonial past, an elaborate red veranda & Chinese landscaping for Macau, these striking images of an African couple that repeat through one area, and so on. But yes, to the point of not having a well-stocked cash register, no doubt the place has an air of abandoned grandeur to it...admittedly I find that really exquisite, but I would also love to see & support a sustainable restoration effort for the grounds & facilities. There were terraced greenhouses, locked & empty, & a small pool beside an unused seating area. Suddenly the bright blue of an enormous peacock, perched on the pillar across from me, right at eye level. It was a kind of ghostly paradise. CR

On that day, we visited the famous Belem neighborhood. Through the streets, while walking, we found the Tropical Botanical Garden and decided to visit it. Why not! There is an entrance fee (2€). In itself, I really loved the walk in the park but on another side, I am still wondering why tourists have to pay an entrance fee! The park is nice but not very well maintained everywhere. The place is not brand new... that's sharp and clear. Concretely, ways and paths are worn and the plants and trees are really surviving thanks to minimal maintenance. This is place was probably very nice in the past but it is unfortunately no longer the case. We still enjoyed the view and the quiet atmosphere here! PS: avoid the toilets! Ugly suprises!

I have seen a handful of botanical gardens in my day, and this one is not particularly spectacular…read more I would love to be able to say more about this place, but it was just not very interesting. There are signs saying what each plant or tree is, but there is no further information about them. There isn't much variation either, or if there is, it isn't apparent. The bed area up top was somewhat nondescript, though there is a fountain. The greenhouse had a special display of plants from the time of dinosaurs, but it wasn't set up to be particularly enthralling. Moving down the hill you come across more trees, a succulent garden, and what is supposed to be a couple of ponds. We were there in May and they were empty. The butterfly house was also closed. It's a nice green area, but the images that come to mind when I think of a botanical garden do not fit what is here, which is really just a glorified shady park-like area. Luckily the entrance fee of €2 per adult is not terrible, so see it if you want. But my tip would be to check out the dozens of other beautiful (and free!) parks throughout Lisbon ahead of this one.

This garden is a quiet refuge of pure beauty & rapture, & that's not even to mention the adjacent…read moremuseum, also owned & operated by the university. What it lacks in a ready supply of disposable funding it more than compensates for in being gorgeous, diverse, lovingly maintained, & a welcome retreat from the bustle outside. The Norfolk Island pine standing some 75 feet tall was just one of many elegant miracles to be found here. I went twice during my stay, just to clear my head & commune with the space, breathe the air, & enjoy the beautiful living things around me. To those who can't appreciate the effort that goes into maintaining a demanding facility of this magnitude on a limited budget, please feel free to skip it & go shop for a purse or be an obnoxious tourist in a tapas place or something.
