I love, love, love gardens. This one was very charming and unique in a few ways--namely, in addition to the boxwood area (that's beautiful), it has a separate section with plants grouped by origin (such as "from Africa," "from the Americas," etc).
On the surface, it appears a bit unkempt. And, I think it is; for example: beds in need of weeding, piles of brush, stagnant, very smelly water in the fountains, etc. In some ways, this is heartbreaking for a garden-lover to see. In another way, it adds to the charm and clearly indicates the age of the place.
The entry fee was 2EUR; it took my friend and I about 1.5 hours to go through the entire place. There is a cafe on site, but I don't know what it offers because we didn't check it out. There are a lot of photo opportunities in this garden. That alone made the 2EUR worth it.
Some highlights:
- A HUGE tree spread over a trellis basically making a building. That's a weird description, but if you see it, you'll understand. It was amazing.
- Seeing plants from home (N. America) on display as "foreign discoveries"
- Seeing very old/mature plants, which is less common in newer gardens
- Peacocks
Overall, I highly, highly recommend checking it out! The lady that was working there was very friendly too and spoke great English. read more
