I had oil leaking from my oil pan gasket. I called them up and they quoted me a reasonable price so I went with them. I dropped my car off and my car was done a few hours later as promised. Just to make sure it was actually replaced I had my brother lift up the car and look at the gasket. It was indeed replaced because it was blue not black like the old one was and no one oil leak was found after the replacement. I only gave them a four star because someone at their shop took a bottle of oil I left in my trunk. I don't know what they did with that bottle but they should have told me before taking it without my permission. Other than that they did a good job. read more

I purchased a Japanese engine from them for my first engine swap and so far so good. I was a little worried at first but it's running good. I foolishly didn't take the man's advice that sold it to me and skipped steps of changing seals and timing belt/water pump and it was leaking a little bit so I ended up doing that after but there was nothing wrong I can see with the engine my car is repaired and I avoided buying a new car. I can't comment on mechanic work they do but as for buying an engine for an engine swap they sold me a good product. The guy even helped me with advice when I had questions. I would use them again for another engine but next time I'm going to go with a rebuilt engine instead of a straight import. read more

I trusted my only car with this place and they screwed it up. I don't think they know what they are doing. They have wrong parts in places, parts just completely missing , and it reeked of smoke. I would highly recommend NOT GOING HERE!!! read more

I needed an engine replaced in my 2009 Toyota Scion.....the tranaction was smooth as glass.....thier professionalism.....head and shouldersabove thier competition......thier prices........low compared to other local shops. The engine was replaced and my vehicle is back on the road with zero drama lol. I cannot thank you enough!.....I highly reccomend Japanese Auto Service at 7505 Portland Ave in Tacoma. read more

They had the wrong engine sent initially even though it was them who examined my car and VIN. Then... to my surprise... the engine did not come ready to be put into an American vehicle. My engine doesn't even look close to the same now... I had to pay a SIGNIFICANT amount more for my mechanic to make it work. Think twice. Go with someone who guarantees that they are getting you EXACTLY what you require. Many other sellers get very specific on what engine setup you are getting. I feel completely taken advantage of. read more

Had them rebuild my 1983 B2000 and 3000 miles later blown head gasket. THEY SUCK

Grandmas car had a "rebuilt" engine put in back in 2017. 2 years and less than 10k miles later, cylinder 2 is dead and 3 is down on compression. Cheap for a reason. read more

Love this place. Ran into (owner) at emerald queen. Sitting next to him I won about $1300 or more on one push of button. I said "that'll come in handy". He said why? I told him my Honda has blown an engine and was at local dealership. He was surprised and informed me he provides Japanese engines for the seattle area dealerships. He explained how I may be being gouged, in a very low keyed manner.. so I tried to get the car off the rack the next day---was too late but the manager there was clearly trying to take advantage of me (72 year old)..making the false assumption I was dumber than apparently he thought I looked. He was so transparent. Based on what my new acquaintance told me I chastised the Honda manager til they apparently cut off a bit of the charge. I asserted I'd never take it t them (Honda)again. Except for a minor emergency (because J.A. Is across town for me) I use Japanese Auto. It's hard to find a mechanic you trust. I trust them. read more

My engine was constantly overheated and white smoke kept coming out so I decided to take it in to a shop. I was a bit hesitant with Japanese Auto Engines due to the lack of reviews but they were conveniently located so I took in my Honda to get it checked out. I wasn't exactly sure what the issue was with my car, but Robert (the manager I believe) was friendly and explained after having someone taking a look that the gasket was blown and what that meant in terms that were easy to understand. It seemed really expensive at first to replace a gasket, but I called around and it was actually one of the cheapest rates in the Seattle/Tacoma area. They fixed it up in 2 days as promised... it's been a few weeks and no issues so far! Hopefully I won't need to, but if I have any further issues I''d return to Japanese Auto Engines. read more

I found Japanese Auto Engines through a friend's recommendation when my 2005 Toyota Camry's break was making weird noise. I left the car at the shop for a day, and Bob explained very clearly what was the issue, what had to be done, the quote, etc., and I was able to pick up my car fixed couple days afterward. Everything was straight forward and simple, and Bob did an excellent job explaining car parts to someone who doesn't understand car at all (me). My dad also came here to change 2006 Toyota Matrix engine belt(?) and had really good experience. Highly recommend it and would come here again! read more

These folks put a JDM engine in my Subaru, it runs flawlessly and the engine is warranted for a year. They even changed a few parts for free just to make the install clean and perfect. They are very knowledgeable about specific issues to look out for in my engine, and were very methodical about their approach to resealing the engine before it was put into my car. To top it all off, my car was back at my house in under a week. I am impressed! read more

The people who left 5 star reviews don't know much about working on cars, had a new motor put in my car by them, they did such a terrible job I had to pay almost 1000 dollars to get it fixed at another shop. The things they do a bad job on are little things that will make engines blow up just after their "warranty" expires. These people are crooks, Don't use them you will REGRET it. read more

I have 1989 Toyota 4 runner has been issue with motor. Bob, manager of Japanese auto engine. Take 4 day to replace motor. like he said 4day job is done. now 18moths past .without no issue I have been drove Toyota. strongly recommend this shop. read more

Be very careful when dealing with these people; the name that you the consumer see is not the name of the company; they hide it for a reason. If you are going to do business with them ask them for a copy of their business license first because you are not going to get the name of their business from them when it's time to go to court. They are supposed to place their business license in a conspicuous place so that you the consumer know who you are dealing with but they won't let you see it and when asked to do so they threaten you; at least they did me. So what are they hiding? I purchased a "crate motor" from them. It wasn't a "crate motor" it was a junk yard motor; a significant difference. So when I told them they ripped me off they offered to pay the difference between a junk yard motor and a crate motor. I told them what they did was fraud and false advertising and I wanted my money back. They refused and told me to take them to court. I wrote a letter explaining that I wished to settle out of court for the difference in price and a small amount for the parts I had to buy and my time repairing their defective junk yard motor. A very equitable solution for them as I had lost a considerably larger sum of money. I went to their office and asked to work out the problem in good faith as the court requires. They refused and called me a "robber" for expecting to get a third of my lost money from them. I asked to see their business license. They said they don't have to show it. I reiterated that the license itself states it must be posted In a conspicuous place so that their customers can see it. They said look it up online. I then saw the business license on the wall at the back of the room and proceeded towards it. They told me to stop and then threatened me if I didn't; so I left. CONSUMER BEWARE read more

"epic bad..............5k in an engine replacement. Have brought the truck back 3 times still making a noise that can only be described as LOUD AND BAD........at this point they are throwing there hands up in the air.........looks like now I get the fun task of litigation. I would never take a repair to them..........not even a gokart at this point read more

I have a 2001 Toyota Highlander that dropped a cylinder. Japanese Auto ended up replacing the engine. During removal they noticed a front axle that needed to be replaced. They called, and for the cost of the part it was fixed, most places would have still charged some labor to replace it (the cost of the part was actually less than what I would have gotten for the part). They took care of it. After the engine was in and ran for a while, they rechecked everything as part of their service. Most impressed with how professional they are. read more

Because of a water pump that suddenly failed, the V6 engine in my Toyota Rav4 was damaged beyond reasonable repair. I came upon Japanese Auto Service through a web search and glad I did. Bob, as other reviewers attest, is a straightforward business owner who services his customers' needs with no fuss. He sourced my engine (100,000 fewer miles newer!) and had it installed within one week. The cost was half of two other quotes I was given. The secret? JAS focuses on engine repair and replacement (while doing other services, as well). Bob took time to explain his business and what differentiates JAS from other shops. If you are expecting cookies, espresso and smiling sales reps -- keep driving down the road and pay the premium. If you want good-old-fashioned reliable service, see Bob. read more

Ever since my sister crashed my 97 Acura Integra, the engine didn't run the same. So I brought it into Japanese Auto Engines, and I'm SO glad I did. Bob, the owner, was super friendly and really took the time to understand the issue. The quote was reasonable, and there were no additional charges later. (I've take cars to other engine shops in the area before, and I always would end up paying more than I initially expected, so this was a welcome change!) All in all, would definitely recommend! read more

Poor service from the time I walked in till the last time I just took my keys and walked out without them keeping their end of the agreement. I had my motor replaced and the motor went tits up after 16 months (18 month warranty ) they replaced the motor, but would not warranty the replacement motor. After 1500 miles he asked that I bring it back in to have a look to see if it was running correctly. I returned on a Friday morning to drop off the truck and I asked if they could look at the heater controls also and he asked if I could return on Monday to get it taken care of. When I returned on Monday he said he could not guarantee that he could not get it fixed that day. I asked why he just did not start the repair on Friday or Saturday and he just became an ass and cussed at me and I let with no repairs or having my motor checked out per our agreement on the new motor. While in his business I heard him argue with other customers as well. read more

These guys are crooks, They do not stand behind their work. They are not willing to work with you. They rebuild an engine in march. the engine is still in warranty but they want me to pay them to fix it. They said they would get the people to warranty the parts. The problem is a head gasket and they want me to pay the $900 to warranty a $50 part. That is not a warranty to me. That tells me that they don't trust their work. If the stood behind their work they would be willing to fix the problem all under warranty (including their labor). DO NOT GO TO THESE PEOPLE. THEY ARE CROOKS. read more

Had a rebuilt motor installed in my T-100. After 30,000 miles the head gasket blew. Turns out he used the wrong gasket. It was cheaper for him and got the motor past the 12 month warranty but Toyota quit using them in 95 when they had to recall them because they were all failing. read more

If there was an option for NO STARS than that is what I would have awarded these thieves! NEVER EVER TAKE YOUR VEHICLE HERE!!! Brought my '87 4Runner in for a crate motor and all I got was a spray painted junk motor.... Hell, could be the same motor that was in it before. They swapped the fuel injectors out, sprayed it and kept all my money. By the way.... They don't honor their B.S Warranty either. They truly are a skid mark on this planet. read more

I had a re-manufactored motor put in my mitsubishi truck by them. It was a bit pricey, but they have been in business for years, so I figured it would be worth it. I had problems form the beginning, it idled up when I turned on the heater, it had erratic idle in general. It hesitated, and @ 2800 rpm would clatter. It sprung a leak behind the timing belt cover, which created a mess very quickly. I brought it in while still under the joke of a 1year "warranty" which defined means they kept my vehicle 3 separate times all day, and did absolutely NOTHING to it. Robert acts like he is interested in what you say.....yeah anyways. They have alot of knowledge, but have no customer service, and are crooks. They want your money and could care less if you have a properly running vehicle. Most recently my truck's engine lost compression on the freeway and is now not running, possibly the timing belt....@ 12,232 miles on the engine? REALLY? I am goign to seek legal action at this point. I would never recomend this company to anybody, unless to have money and time to burn. Horrible. read more

THIEF!!!! During an engine replacement one of the mechanics STOLE/SWAPPED my new Weber 38/38 carb for an old beat-up Weber 32/36 thinking perhaps we wouldn't notice. WRONG! Took a few months to figure out why the new engine had no power but finally realized the DECEPTION. Confronted Robert, the owner, who flatly denied it ever happened. Says he trusts his mechanics and they would never do such a thing. Luckily I had both the original box and receipt for the 38/38. Took pictures of the swapped carb and showed him the documentation. He still denied it but did refund me $400. Hmmmm. Unfortunately another new carb was $540 so am out $140 and months of aggravation. BAD KARMA for this business. As far as the actual engine have a 1988 Mazda B2600. Replaced 100k mile stock motor with a re-manufactured engine in Feb. 2014, returned in March because the rings didn't seat so was burning oil, back in June because an "air-jet" valve went bad and was burning oil, back again in Oct. 2014, another air-jet valve gone bad and was going through oil. This time they actually installed a new "NON" air-jet valve head. All this was done under warranty. Robert was courteous and really went out of his way to take care of us. That's why we were so shocked when we discovered the carburetor theft! He has a great business but one DISHONEST MECHANIC has spoiled me from ever doing business there again. read more
