We were a hungry group of four girls and at 17ish dollars a head we were well catered for. Starters we went with the lovely owners suggestions and tried three starter between us, one potatoes dish one fried coriander (trust me you just have to try) and one fried sago dish all came with lovely dips and sauces and at $4 or $5 each an impressive serving. Main We shared 2 Thali's which is a kinda set plate with pickles, salad, spiced rice, dal and breads. every was very tasty Desert Even thou we where heading into the too full stage by now the deserts were interesting enough to tempt us, I had the Shrikhand which was sweet and full of flavour and interesting blend of cardamon and sweet sugar. a little defiantly goes a long way... All washed down with Mango Lassi which looked a vibrant colour. I will be back no doubt with more friends to tow to show off this little gem in Sandringham.

The little eatery sits on the corner of Sandringham road, among Indian Central with eating houses left right and centre. Is go as far to say this is the cultural capital of India in Auckland. It can be rather hard at time to choose what's good. Basically I've heard a lot about this place not even knowing the name of it so I went in on the basis of having read and saw an image of it somewhere. When I rolled in and sat down, it was close to 9pm, I assume it's nearly closing time. But the friendly staff assured me it's all good and handed me a menu. I browsed through itnot knowing what to order as these are all authentic vegetarian dishes that you really have to be Indian to know. In my slightly inebriated state, I went for something that's like a mixed combo called Undhiya Puri. What it actually consisted of is a vegetable dish (made w aromatic spices herbs, and nuts) some puffs called Puris, Chaas (Buttermilk), Papad and some salad. It came in a stainless steel plate, very traditional. Taste wise, it was an explosion of sweet, tangy, textures and half way thru me eating the owner rolled out and asked me how my meal was which I replies 'amazing!'. It was vibrant and fresh thinking to myself and every element served it's purpose there. Then in a jiffy the proud owner rolled out with a Dahl dish for me to try and followed by an entree dish which just tastes incredible called Pani Puri - it's wet in the centre and crunchy on the top. I told him next time I'm around - I'm bringing a group.

It might be the kind of chaotic way they appear to run this tiny restaurant - the tables appear to be constantly filled with dirty dishes, like you've just missed the last group to leave. I think a more polite reviewer would call the décor "rustic" or something, but to me it's just shabby. The food is really great - when I've been here I've been brought a number of small plates to sample, along with dahi puri, which is always amazing, wherever you get it. The first time I ever tried lassi was at Jai Jalaram Khaman as well - while I can't say I liked it, I appreciated that the owner really wanted to show it off, like he did many of his wares. It was clear that while he's not very house proud, he loves what he cooks and wants people to love them too.

Although we were seated at a quiet table near the window, the enthusiastic crowd upstairs signaled this place was good enough to bring the party to. Our meal started with Onion bahji and curry sauce. I equate this to onion rings without coming full circle. We dined on this for quite a while, as we waited on our entree. It was a good 20 minutes before our food arrived. Possibly delayed because of the large party upstairs. Perhaps they had not prepared in advance? I ordered the Lamb Vidaloo traditional spicy, Raita and Saffron Rice. The vindaloo was superb. A thick, creamy, spicy sauce with tender seasoned lamb. The rice was aromatic, lightly fluffed and cooked to perfection. The raita.. Oohhhh the raita. Not good at all. It was sweet! Another raita with extra fixings involved. This one had chopped onion, along with some sweet flavor I couldn't quite place. When I asked our server if it was a specific type of raita, he said it was the house special traditional. Mmm okay, suppose I'll keep searching for the house special flavor I am used to; just yogurt and cucumber thanks. The naan bread was also a bit subpar - not the baked semi-crunchy naan most places serve. Put it this way it was soggy without even dipping it in the vindaloo or raita. There are specials for each night of the week here. On this occasion, the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night special includes a curry, rice and naan for $12.99. I may pass on the naan and raita, but I thoroughly enjoyed the vindaloo.

After about 20 minutes, the waitress told me that unless I ordered a main I had to leave. There was literally no one else in the dining area. I'm not one to usually leave negative reviews for any place but this felt incredibly disrespectful and unnecessary. Was it such an issue for me to take up one table in an empty restaurant? Definitely do not recommend.

A lurid green roller door lifts to reveal a counter and a tiny kitchen, and that's it. I suspect it's the front of someone's house that's been converted. It's in a pretty awful location - shoved between mechanics and panel beaters, with a carpark in front of it that's great if there's no-one in it and incredibly stressful on an average night when it's filled with cars and wandering people. The Stoddard Road can get really busy when there's services at the mosque opposite Tandoori Hut, and there often seems to be a prayer gathering sometime between 6 and 7.30pm, so bear that in mind re traffic/people crossing road. I'm partly explaining all this to warn you to be prepared, but also slightly in the hope that it means you'll give up and leave Tandoori Hut to the rest of us, because it's busy enough as it is. There seems to be a regular crowd, and often you end up having to wait a little longer than the estimate they give you re times, but I figure at least that way you know they're cooking it from scratch. The food is really, really good. We first discovered it because it was in the Top 10 Metro Cheap Eats (not bad for a roller-door operation). It's fresh, tasty and cheap - mains are between $10 and $12, including those with seafood (I know right?!). i know I shouldn't just order butter chicken because there are many more interesting things on the menu, but seriously - this stuff is really good. Less creamy, more tomatoey and more spicy than the standard kiwi-ised version. Best find in ages. NB, closed on Wednesdays, which is the The Worst Thing when you suddenly decide you can't be bothered cooking on a rainy midweek night. Remember this fact to avoid disappointment.
