It's a dangerous time, when you can can simultaneously humiliate yourself and bleed your life savings dry. Tar Heel Guitar's Jason Derrick helped me avoid all of that on my latest life-enrichment venture. I am a man, therefore I hate to shop. Purchasing my first mandolin might as well have been like purchasing my first international space station. That is: I have no damn idea what to look for, except that both should be out of this world but easy enough for a chimp to manage. His recommendations were backed with reasoned explanations. In the end, I decided to forgo the mandolin and work on my grandfather's banjo, an instrument not touched for decades. Jason led me to the right local gentleman for the job of sprucing it up. Loose knobs and bridge fixed, it was time to play! I had two lessons with Jason. He was hospitable working out of his home studio, and had a plan for me, as well as homework assignments prepared. Money's worth, no doubt. If only I was a better student! Too many life distractions prevented me from returning, and I've since moved from the area. However, I am 100% confident that when I return to learning, I'll know exactly where to place my hands, how to hold a pick, how to strum, how to tune, and a few other essential beginner skills to perfect. All that in two lessons and some freebie time to get my banjo up to snuff. Folks young and old looking to learn, you'll go right by having lessons at Tar Heel Guitar.

Some of the features that stand out for me include: - Individualized instruction: Jason tailors the lessons for my personal goals and musical interests, including playing style, songs to learn, application of musical theory, etc. - Diversity of instructional content (e.g., guitar fundamentals, playing technique, music theory, songwriting, and more): I was seeking a well-rounded learning experience; Jason has tailored my learning plan accordingly so that I can learn everything from strumming and picking technique to complex concepts in music theory. - Flexibility - As an adult learner getting back into guitar lessons, being able to find a schedule that worked for me was incredibly important! Finally, Jason has an enthusiasm for music (and more importantly, for teaching music) that is encouraging and fun, making his lessons something that I look forward to every week. For these and many other reasons, I highly recommend Tar Heel Guitar Instruction.

I know because I took lessons with Maurice for almost two years until I moved away from the area, and recommend his personal approach to any guitar player whatever level, if they have the desire to learn how to improve toward mastery the instrument. He is kind and agreeable, not at all weird. He taught from in a studio in a comfy home in Carrboro. As a teacher, he leaves room for the little quirks in everyone's way of handling a guitar, but tries to stamp out bad technique, posture or grip before it becomes ingrained as a habit. Every hand is different, and Maurice will use a physical therapist's instincts to help you find the best way for your fingers to make the chord sound right. When I took lessons with him, I was a 20-year old beginner with a full college course load. I am not an expert player and don't pretend to be, but things Maurice said and taught stuck with me for years after I moved away. He also gives printed exercises that familiarize the student with basic styles of playing (flat-picking, chomping, blues shuffles, staple licks and patterns) Some of these exercises are designed to emphasize an important skill (muting, skipping strings, pull-offs, etc.) and I think others are to give his student a greater vocabulary for the instrument and its history. Most of these exercises he has transcribed himself from the work of master guitar players in his large music library. He has also transcribed, not for note and bend for bend, some of the blistering solos of Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and other guitar gods. If you want someday to be able to play the hooks and solos of masters like Jimi and Duane, rhythm-guitar of Pete Townsend or Jimmy Reed, learn licks, riffs and runs, jazz chords, or learn how to improvise solos, Maurice will be your guide.
