She wasn't joking…read more The entrance is away from the street, facing the hemp-and-paranoia fest that is Christiania (4-foot-tall "No Photos" sign every ten meters). Once you find that, it's past the graffiti, up the stairs, and through an unmarked-and-nearly-invisible door behind you.
Once you get inside, it's a different world. Giant wooden beams support the ceiling, oil lamps provide gently glowing illumination, and Berkeley / San Francisco-grade hipsters weave between the tables, dropping off plates laden with braised mushrooms, mashed potatoes with leeks, and lamb cutlets.
I went for the venison, with whipped potatoes and berry compote. The venison was past tender into soft --- good, but not what I was hoping for. My wife got fish, with a salmon-spinach souffle, some fennel, shrimp, fried potatoes, and a good helping of creamy sauce. We started with a soup --- translated for us as "like carrots, but white," which we think was parsnip --- that was creamy and rich, but still nicely light.
The house red wine was good --- but the house white was absolutely amazing. You have to try it.
