I saw Anna the NP- she barely made eye contact. I became very dizzy and lightheaded from an injection in my nose for a biopsy. She said there is always someone in the hall, call out if I need anything and left. She froze a spot on my forehead and didn't even notice the spot a half inch away that was what I actually intended for her to look at. I would never see her again! read more

The front desk clerks as well as the Dermatologist who took good care of me during my cancer screening all did a great job and should be commended for their work ethnics. However there was one particular employee who did not treat me as respectfully as I felt I should have been treated. I arrived fifteen minutes prior to my appointment time, the receptionist was helpful, and performed her job well. I filled out and completed the electronic signature agreement. I am a previous patient with the Hanover location but had to relocate, and I must say I miss the fact that I was always greeted and treated with utmost respect at the Hanover location. I still had 5 minutes I beleive before my appointment time. Like clock-work I always go to restroom pior to examination because I am older and my bladder does not behave properly the way it use to when I was younger. I was also very nervous about my skin cancer screening. I have had cancer removals in the past years, I am always nervous about new cancers, and removals.I needed to go to the restroom but a person was occupying when one of the expressionlist nurse assistants (not sure of her proper title), opened the main doorway and called for my name. I was very polite, still waiting patiently for the restroom to become available, and I was not late, I probably had five minutes left before my appointment and the office was nearly empty, with barely any other patience. I told her I needed to use the restroom before I was seen by my Dermatologist and that it was currently occupied. The young lady continued to stare at me blankly, she appeared to lack any form of people skills. Where was the proper greeting that I never received all while she just stood there as if I had become a burden. I asked if there was another restroom in the building but she just replied with a "no. " She didn't think for one moment to say something logical like, "it's okay, take your time, I'll let the Dermatologist know, just come to the door and call for me after you've had a chance to go to the restroom. But NO, she had to be a nothing burger standing there looking stoned faced. I don't remember the exact exchange with the young women bur my husband was with me, (thank-God), but soon afterwards the bathroom became available and then we called for her afterwards to take us to my room. She did her job while in the room to ask a few brief questions before giving me instructions on how to wear the gown. No expression, or patient care whatsoever, a robot would have served me better! I think James River needs to know that first impressions of a company is usually judged by how humanly friendly your workers are, how well they are greeted properly. Your company is a business and should conduct themselves according, especially how costly medical is these days or how difficult it is to find common courtesy in the mist of the cost that we pay as patience for our care. I understand if this lady was having a bad day but as the saying goes a good employee should be able to leave their bad day at home while and not bring it to work. I don't know maybe this lady is friendly to other people, maybe it was just me she didn't like. Who knows, but Just standing there in the doorway with a gapping expressionlist look on her face, in silence was just outright disrespectful to an older women like myself twice her age and senior! Please train your staff to greet your patience properly, especially people my age who should not feel guilty for needing to releive themselves when there's only one public single restroom available at the front waiting room area. I started going to this practice many years ago for routine 6 mos full body scans due to a mole being melanoma. Initially the practice was run well and the doctors and staff were attentive. Over time as they grew, I could tell that things were changing, and not for the better. I recently lost my job and transitioned to Anthem Healthkeepers plus health insurance. I was informed that JRD does not accept this plan. I offered to self-pay and they told me it would be $500 just to see a doctor or PA, plus any additional cost if they have to remove anything to be biopsied. Typically when I see a doctor for a scan it takes about 5 minutes. Even if it takes another 5 minutes to review my case file before & after the visit, that is still a ridiculous amount to be charging. read more

Not happy at all with this practice , my PHC sent me to Leslie Farr NP to diagnose what she thought was allergic reaction on my breast , after treating it for 2 weeks with ointment it wasn't getting better so I go back & ask for a wound culture cuz it had spread under my breast & onto my stomach, she didn't want to give me one & copped an attitude, then she basically called me a liar about getting a prescription refilled and acoused me of going to another provider! She told me it would take 3 weeks for culture to come back , it took 3 days , I went on lab corp & looked it up , I had staph ! Now I'm really upset, I called to get antibiotic & they would not call me in one cuz they didn't have time to read the report , had to call my family dr to call them to get some results! Went here for the first time and with my insurance I don't have a copay to see a dermatologist. Well at the office we were charged $50 up front, then when I called a week later I was told patients that haven't reached their deductible have to pay $70/copay! Ummm I don't have a copay and even if my deductible was met they wouldn't know that day. So???? read more

The receptionists at this practice are rude and treat you like they have no time for your questions. Trying to get a hold of this practice is nearly impossible and they always end their appointments with "call if you have any questions", and then conveniently never have time to talk on the phone. Waiting for results is horrible while being a patient here because they like to keep you on your toes and not call back while you're trying to get more information regarding a serious matter. I wouldn't recommend coming here. Never a welcoming feeling, always attitude. read more

I had to pay an outrageous co-pay not their fault but then the lady Doctor wouldn't do anything but prescribe "cream" even though I begged for laser or light or whatever therapy then she hacked a piece off just to send it to some outside lab to see if it was cancerous and i had to call them back over and over just to be put on hold for an outrageous amount of time to be told it was benign. You people at this office you need to wake up and not disregard your patients. I hope they go out of business and are turned into a dog grooming salon for the frufru neighborhoods near it. read more

My son has been seeing Dr Michele Phillips for two years now. She has removed skin tags and been vigilant in following his skin issues. She has been a wonderful provider and would highly recommend her to anyone. She is very knowledgeable and professional. The staff is another story. Usually no one welcomes you and getting through on the phone is an issue. However, within the past few months it seems some staff changes have been made so it feels more positive. read more

Went searching for a dermatologist due to a small spot of concern on my ear. Web results gave me this practice as the closest practice to me. I scheduled open time slot appointment online and was sent a link to patient portal. I followed up with a phone call to confirm and was told appointment was indeed booked and confirmed. I also received a confirmation text as well. How nice, I thought, seems like a well run office. 20 minutes later I get phone call asking for insurance information. I advised that I was self employed and would be paying at time of service. The practice representative then informed me that her manager informed her that they are not accepting "new or self-pay patients". I told her I understood but as a business owner my wife and I have a catastrophic insurance policy and pay out of pocket for office visits and small procedures if needed. I even offered to give a credit card to keep on file if needed. She was firm that I would be unable to keep my already scheduled appointment to visit the doctor so I asked to speak to the manager. The manager repeated the statement that they do not accept "new self-pay patients" so I let her know that I understand that some medical practices do not accept "new patients" as the physicians may simply be too busy but the"self pay" denial of service was new to me. The manager, RC then explained that the self pay policy was due to "issues with self pay patients in the past". I let her know that I understood where she was going with this and once again offered to give her a credit card or some form of deposit before being seen. (Keep in mind I have a potential cancer spot on my ear) She insisted that I would be unable to keep my scheduled appointment so I asked for clarification or a definition on what she meant by "issues with self pay patients in the past" She actually refused to define or explain what that meant. The medical providers, NP's, PA's and MDs of this practice should be ashamed of themselves if they are aware of this policy. read more

I went in to get on a caseload as I have a family history of skin cancer and very fair, freckled skin. The receptionists were kind and helpful. One young lady sat with an older gentleman to help him with the questions on the paperwork, so very sweet. The nurse in the exam room was concise and efficient. The PA who saw me was very thorough and made me feel at ease. All in all, it was a professional and good experience. read more

I visited 3 times and refuse to go back to this place. NP attempted to remove a small round actinic keratosis abrasion on my face. She shaved a small line through it with liquid nitrogen but didn't remove the entire abrasion. Looks terrible. In addition, they charge everyone $15 upfront even if you have insurance but they don't tell you this when you make an appt. So what happens when you overpay them after insurance is paid? Beware of unnecessary testing and billing. The doctor removed a pregnancy-related skin tag (common benign condition). I was happy with the service at the appointment and didn't argue when the doctor said it was "standard procedure" to send to lab for testing. Turns out they do lab testing with an out-of-network lab and I was later surprised with hefty bill from the lab. Really unimpressed. Most patients select doctors within the parameters of their "in network" coverage, so it is incredibly frustrating to go to an in-network doctor who then outsources procedures to an out-of-network provider without your knowledge or consent. Really would have appreciated them checking with me first as to whether I could afford to send something to a lab which was not in-network. Not going back. read more

I've been Dr. Regan's patient since I moved to Virginia in 2007. She moved to Midlothian and I followed. I love her work. She's very friendly. Takes the time to talk with you and really get to know you and what your life is like before prescribing any medication to make sure it will fit you and your lifestyle. Love Dr. Regan. Great staff! They took me 20 minutes before my appointment time as well. Friendly quick but through. Not happy at all! I have been going here over a year every 4-6 weeks and today I totally forgot about my appt...as soon as I realized which was 5 mins past the appt time I called the office to apologize and reschedule and was told I can no longer go to that practice for a no show appt!!!! I could see charging me a fee because yes it was my fault for missing this appt but telling me I was not allowed to reschedule or go there anymore just floored me! Needless to say I called Richmond Dermatology and got in tomorrow and will actually be able to see a doctor where I always had to see the PA before at James River. read more

My young daughter had an appointment today. However her great grandfather passed away on Saturday. Monday was the 4th of July. The funeral is today in NC. I called to cancel first thing this morning and they would not wave the 24 hour cancellation fee. While I understand that is their policy, I stated I would provide a death certificate and obituary. That still was not good enough. I know they are able to wave fees, I work for a company that deals with the same kind of fees. I will not be visiting there again and I will not recommend them to anyone. I have never met a company with such lack of sympathy. read more

Went to this office as a new patient to see a dermatologist about skin issues I was familiar with and had before. After dealing with office staff including an interview, a medical assistant arrived, asked questions, took pictures and started an exam that ended with surgically removing two skin fragments for biopsy. Yes, an assistant not a doctor did this procedure. Was told someone would call with biopsy results and could leave. Several days later office staff called to say a MOHs surgery referral was being made and a follow up visit. Never saw or talked with Dr. Regan and was advised that it would be another month before I could return for treatment. Would NEVER go back to this practice and am actually seeing and "talking" to another dermatologist. read more

Been there 3 times over past 5 yrs. Office staff is fine. PA's have much better bedside manner than doctor Regan. She's way too rushed, never asked if I had any questions, just left room for next patient. I didn't know she wasn't coming back. I was politely waiting until she was done speaking but she hustled out the door and I was told by the PA that the doc was not coming back. I said I had a question but the PA said the doctor was on her way to the next patient. Not the first time this has happened. I prefer working with the PA's. Doctor needs to work on her manner with her patients. read more

I cannot give the any stars. We never got to see the doctor! My 82 year old great aunt has sever lupus and arthritis. She had an appointment to be seen for a severe attack from the lupus. Her appointment was at 3:20pm. She was taken back to the room at 3:30pm. By 4:05 pm she STILL had not been seen, and was in a lot of pain and discomfort. I left the room to find out what was taking so long. I encountered two women an area off the side of the hallway and asked if they knew how long it was going to be, b/c I had an 82 yer old in pain who had been waiting for 40 minutes. I was told someone would be coming. A few moments later one of them, who turned out to be a PC, came in the room. I told her it was not good practice to leave someone of my aunts age and condition to be sitting for so long. Her reply was that it had only been THIRTY minutes to her...no apology. She then added that she had been studying the medical history, which no doubt, she needed to go over WITH my aunt as well. She left to get the office manager. The Office Manager came in and offered to reschedule my aunt with the MD, who was more qualified to deal with the lupus anyhow. We explained that Sally was in a lot of pain and could not wait. The Office Manager then FLOORED me by saying the PC REFUSED to come see my aunt because I was "irate". Now, I had chastised her for making my aunt wait, but I never raised my voice, threatened her, nor became abusive. Nor did they offer to see her if IU stepped out. I also had my 9 year old daughter with me. Upon hearing this claim I DID become upset and angry. They were refusing to treat a sick patient, that they had already made WAIT, because of me??? Honestly? At that point I DID get angry and asked for medical license numbers and phone numbers so I could file a complaint. At that point I was INDEED irate. She even threw it in my aunts face that it would take her three months to get in with another dermatologist, but agreed that my aunt could come back and see the doctor Tuesday....well, we KNOW she should have been scheduled with the MD, not the PC, due to her condition to begin with, and for them to neglect her then make excuses is abhorrent. The office manager had NO people skills, and the PC that refused to treat my aunt should lose her ability to practice. read more

I decided to go with this practice because when I called the first time to inquire about making an appointment the young lady explained once I was a client I would be able to get in to be seen quicker. So today, I called in to try and get an appointment, inquiring about this week or next and was told it would be mid October. I could've dealt with that however then the receptionist Vanessa? I think it was, proceeded to get an attitude as if my request was outlandish. I will no longer attend this practice as the customer service skills are not appropriate. While the actual appt wasn't bad, the billing/accounting dept is what is costing our business. Beware if you pay with a debit/credit card for your co-pays at this office. My husband and i went together for a checkup last July and over a month and a half ago, our debit card was charged $80 from JR Dermatology. When I called to inquire, they told me it was an unpaid balance that insurance did not pay for my husband. It paid for mine, we both just had an exam and I called the insurance co and they said it was a coding error on the doctors office part. The insurance co even took the time to call them directly and spoke with "Aiyesha?" and told them what the error on their part was. I was told that I would be refunded the charge and it never happened. I called now 3 times since and keep getting the run around. I'm giving them until Friday to refund me or I'm calling the BBB and 12 on your side, news. My family and I will not be back. read more

I had what my pcp thought was eczema. I had been treated with prescription ointment but still had hives and itchiness. I called as a new patient for an appointment: a month wait. I figured that was pretty standard so I accepted it for what it is. I arrived at my appointment early and I was taken to the room promptly. The staff was pleasant. The PA-C however was curt and completely unhelpful. I ended my 15 minute appointment with orders for blood work because she didn't know what it was. She said in some cases it just goes away. Whatever it is. I asked is it eczema, psorasis, allergic reaction, insect bites anything-- no. She wasn't sure. Ok....she was more concerned about removing a mole on my leg that has been checked before and was ok. Although I appreciate the concern I suppose, I feel like I wasted my time and money on this appointment. I went home and called another dermatologist and got a 2nd appointment for tomorrow. It couldn't go any worse than this place. Huge disappointment. read more

Dr. Regan is knowledgeable and thorough. She rushes through her appointments (hey, dermatologists are busy!), but her demeanor and follow through is GREAT. I had to stop seeing her due to the unprofessional behavior of her administrative staff. They are just plain rude and more often than not, move appointment times without notification to patient. What a scumbag organization. I went there to get two moles checked out. They carved two huge holes out with no stitches. When my nurse practitioner wife saw them and heard how they recommended treatment, she was livid. Two nice scars now. To make matters worse, they billed my secondary health insurance first so it was rejected. I told them to bill the primary first and then bill the secondary. Apparently, they never did bill secondary because today I found out I have an account in collections from them on my credit score. Who does that? read more

My 23 year old daughter went to JR Dermatology as a new patient in September 2017. She was looking forward to finally seeing a professional for an ongoing skin condition. She has her on healthcare with her work, but is in an entry level position so has to budget her out pocket living expenses.....so seeing a specialist was going to cost her precious but justified money. She called me immediately crying after her appointment saying that Dr Laura Regan was cold , rushed and did not listen to her concerns....she felt it was a waste of her time and money. This week she met with her primary and related the experience which prompted her to leave a review on Google review 10/11/17. This was her review: "I was very disappointed with my experience. I waited a long time to get an appointment and paid up front $75 (what they charge initially) to go. I felt like I was rushed the whole time during my visit. Basically told I just have adult acne. I brought all the products I use and felt like she didn't take the time to look at them for approval or advice. Shook off any idea that could cause acne that I asked about: allergies, stress, etc.) I was given a generic antibiotic that I could have easily gotten from my regular doctor. Overall spent $100 that I felt was a waste of time and money. I left very upset because I felt like going there would give me some sort of relief after everything I've tried and that a professional would give me help me, but more of a waste of my time. I called back three weeks later asking to talk to about possible side effects I was experiencing, got a voicemail back 4 days later saying "if I experience any side effects stop taking it" and that's it. Overall, I got nothing out of my visit." Yesterday, 10/12/17 she received a 1-day USPS Priority letter (that cost them $6.65) from JR Dermatology. *note send out within 12 hours of her review* The letter read "This letter is to inform you that effective 11/11/2017 James River Dermatology will be withdrawing from future care as your dermatologist. Please use these next thirty days to secure the services of another Dermatologist from among the many qualified physicians in our area. During this next thirty-day period, we will be available to render care only in the case of an emergency. Our office will promptly and courteously forward copies of appropriate medical information to the physician of your choice upon receipt of a signed and dated authorization to release such information. If you have any questions I can be reached at 804-379-0116. Sincerely, Nancy A Evans, Practice Manager, James River Dermatology." WOW!!! REALLY? I would think that they would have reached out to her to make her experience better. Had to put one star to be able to post this review. Front office staff were very knowledgable and fun. The doctor was very nice; but probably the least responsive to what I was looking for in a dermatologist. I thought dermatologist were all about the skin ... she treated every tiny bump like it was a disease and she was afraid to touch.
