I have never had to go to a dermatologist before but this was the easiest, best, smoothest experience Iv ever had with any sort of medical facility in my life. I absolutely love the staff everyone is so nice and it was really easy to get in soon. They fixed my problem, answered all my questions thoroughly and I really love that I could just pick up the phone and someone answered when I needed it. That was a huge gold star for me because there's not a lot of places where you can call and actually get a person on the phone these days. Update: I do not have superficial basal cell cancer. I have nodulo-infiltrative basal cell cancer. It is advanced and aggressive. I did not know basal cell could be aggressive. I will go to UVA in November to have my scalp removed from my forehead back to the crown. I don't know how extensively it has grown on the sides. But I do know it took years to grow to the extent it has. It is a horror to comtemplate and I would never want anyone to go what I am going through. It won't kill me, but it is going to change my life substantially. Think about this if you still want to make an appointment with Avenues Dermatology for anything other than Botox. Someone should have done a biopsy years ago. So take care and ask for a biopsy if you have a scaly spot that doesn't go away. read more

Update! I'm still in love with Avenues Dermatology. I have been going about once a month to have a keloid injected and have seen great results, but it was still giving me problems so they decided to remove it. I was scheduled with Dr. Pheiffer for removal, which was yesterday. I had no wait at all, which was amazing. I was prepared to have the minor procedure done, but after chatting with her nurse, Dr. Pheiffer came in and suggested that we freeze it off instead. It was less invasive, little to no recovery, and minor healing. I said, sign me up! The procedure literally took 15 seconds. They sprayed the liquid nitrogen on the spot, which did burn a little but nothing crazy, and I was on my way shortly after. Today, the day after, I have no burning at all unless I touch it. I should see results in as little as two weeks and I can't wait! I'm so thankful to her for suggesting we freeze it instead. Nobody had mentioned that as an option to me until yesterday. So grateful for this practice! I woke up with my eye swollen shut and needed to see the doctor right away. The lovely receptionist fit me in THE NEXT DAY. I was in the waiting room all of 5 minutes before Nurse Emily took me back. She really took the time to hear about my eye while giving me the scoop on good moisturizers. Dr. Pfeiffer joined us less than 10 minutes later. She had me go in more detail about my health history, took the time to explain options, and then wrote out a treatment plan step by step. Dr. Pheiffer has been my dermatologist for several years. She is absolutely the most skillful and knowledgeable dermatologist in the city. I moved to Richmond from NYC over 10 years ago. I've been through a few dermatologists here best described as "one worse than another". I scheduled a new patient annual appt, explaining I needed to get back to annual checks as skin cancer runs in the family and with COVID I hadn't been seen in 2 years. On the initial call when the appt was scheduled the girl asked if I had any specific concerns and I said yes, I had a spot on my foot that I should get looked at. Four months later it's appt day. I show up, get called back & the nurse proceeds to start asking about my foot. Soon it became very uncomfortable for us both as it was clear that whoever scheduled the appt scheduled me for a spot check only. She wasn't offering to fix their mistake, so I asked if I was going to have to wait another 4 months for my annual, and stated I'd rather wait for the full scan vs. being charged twice. Speaking with the office manager on the way out he was so unprofessional, never offering a sincere apology. He never offered to put me on a wait list for cancellations to try to get me back sooner since they messed up. He was just mean. read more

Avoid this practice. Dr phiffer is extremely unpleasant - she does not appreciate any follow up questions and treats patients as inferior. She made me cry during my visit because she was so rude. Never met a doctor like her and will not tolerate the way she makes others feel. read more

OMG! There is not enough characters to explain. Without my consent she put liquid nitrogen on my face in January. I told her I scar easily and I really did not want the treatment, said it 3 times! She still did it. It is now March 17th and my face still has the scars from the treatment. Then she had the NERVE to send the bill that she said was FREE because I had paid for 3 facial peals. My insurance did not pay and now she billed me! She is a real piece of work. Obtained a lawyer and may go to the board because of the mess she had made and stress she has caused me! My niece also had and incident with her a few years ago and my niece almost lost her leg! Her license needs to be pulled. Don't Go! read more

I should have written an update long go, but didn't, I forgot about this review. 1) You have to get to know and understand all of the staff. 2) I never had a issue with their abilities or treatments. 3) The gentleman at the reception desk named Jack is very good, through and efficient. 4) Dr. Phieffer has always been the best, but she does talk to you as if you are somewhat dense, but I now see why. Most patients are dense and will not do what they are instructed, so she just gets to the points and is very direct and very to the point. I have always respected her for that. So, if you wear your feelings on your sleeve or are a bit frail emotionally or mentally, she may not be for you. If you want to get your problems fixed and get the correct diagnoses and treatment for your issues the first time around, please see Dr. Phieffer. 5) They are about business, they fix peoples issues and expect to get paid. With that said, they will not see you (most of the time) if you have a late outstanding balance and if you do not cancel your appointment more than 24 hours out, they will bill you a $35 last minute cancellation charge. They are very efficient, move fast and get things done! The nurse and Dr. Phieffer will answer any questions, but neither will horseplay or socialize with you. Again, they are about business and healing peoples ills. I have been seeing Dr. Phieffer for almost 6 years and she knows what my issues are on the first visit every time. A+. 10 out of 10. Amazing. Sad that my two issues are resolved and I have to wait a year to go back. What I appreciated most--along with the excellent medical care--is that the office RUNS ON TIME. I am sick of arriving on time for appointments elsewhere and waiting forever. When I thanked Dr. Phieffer for this she said her philosophy is mutual respect. That comes thru in all the interactions throughout the office. We had a great conversation during the procedure to remove some skin cancer. The staff is kind and friendly. My hair was falling out after cancer & then scoliosis surgery. Now, thanks to "Avenues", it is looking normal again!

I was a patient of Shannon's, who was wonderful (extremely knowledgeable and suggested things other dermatologists had not). I saw her in part for kenalog injections for cystic acne. For these injections, the nurse marks the spot on your face with marker and then cleans the spot with alcohol. Once, when Shannon was busy, I saw Courtney instead. Courtney's nurse totally wiped the marker off in the process of cleaning the spot. Courtney then injected the wrong spot on my face (injecting normal skin instead of a pimple). Within hours, my face starting hurting terribly and I ended up with a bright red bullseye around the spot of the injection. I called to report this. Shannon suggested I come in, which I did. I was not charged a co-pay for this visit. She suggested I return in two weeks if the spot was not gone. I went back today as I still have a large divot where the injection was done. The office manager insisted I have a co-pay; when I tried to explain that it was waived last time, he was extremely rude and inappropriate. He tried to compare my follow-up for one of his providers making a mistake to follow-ups for someone who has diabetes. He talked over me in such a condescending way that I ended up leaving without being seen. Due specifically to the way he treated me, I will not return to this practice, in spite of the excellent care Shannon provided. As a lawyer, I am in disbelief that the office manager of a practice that committed what is essentially malpractice isn't bending over backwards to help a mistreated patient. read more

My normal dermatologist had a wait of over a month and I wasn't about to wait that long. I called Avenues and got scheduled for two days later due to a cancellation! Awesome! The wait was long even though I came early to my appointment time. I think I still had to wait 15 after my appointment time. I saw Dr. Gorman and he was very kind and accommodating to my poor college student status and tried to helped as much as he could with the financial expenses. It was pretty quick, but you can tell how much experience he's probably had with skin. I asked a lot of questions and he had the answers and helped try to find the best overall solution after considering different factors such as price and location (since I'll be going back to school soon). I've been a patient of Dr. Laura Phieffer for about a year and half now. I go strictly for acne so I cannot speak to the other services she offers. Prior to Dr. Phieffer I was a patient of another dermatologist who I was really unhappy with (always running late, overbooking appointments, and expensive!) I should also note that I was shocked when I called Dr. Phieffer's office for the first time to get in and was able to make my first appointment within a month- unheard of with dermatologists! The first time I met Dr. Phieffer she was very nice and took the time to listen to my concerns so we could work together to fix my skin issues. She is really open to changing treatments and trying new things so if you find something that works, let her know! And don't be too shy to speak up if you feel like you are being written several prescriptions or you have questions about prices on things. In regards to appointment making, I have never had any issues making an appointment and can normally be seen within a week or two (sometimes even the within a day or two if there's been a cancellation). Amazing! They saw my 13 year old daughter for acne and were completely professional. They LISTENED to her issues (regarding her own skin) and then created a plan around her lifestyle. They were super supportive and encouraging her on how things will get better and gave her hope. I was so afraid she wouldn't be taken seriously given her age - normal response is she will grow out of it or make food issues. However, she explained the products that she uses and they taught proper methods and prescribed topical ointments. Just amazing. We cannot wait to see them again. read more

I've been on the hunt for a good dermatologist in Richmond and I visited about 3 other places before finding Dr. Phieffer. Lets just say my search is over. I first met Jack at the front desk who is extremely nice and accommodating and my wait was only 5 minutes (which to me was shocking because the wait at the other dermatologist was about 1 hr). The nurse guided me in and reviewed all my notes and she was also was friendly. Before she left, she handed me a magazine to entertain me while I waited for the doctor, but that wait was again, only about 5 minutes. Now on to Dr. Phieffer, she examined my skin, came up with a game plan, and she was pleasant, knowledgeable, and sympathetic. She was able to fix my condition in 2 weeks that left other doctors scratching their heads for a solution. I really couldn't have asked for a better dermatologist. read more

Dr. Phieffer has helped tremendously both my mother and myself. She is simply the most skilled specialist around here (and we have seen quite a few doctors in Richmond and NYC). Dr. Phieffer is fantastically knowledgeable and she is an amazing dermatological surgeon. I have never seen anyone so skilled - you literally do not feel anything when she cuts off bits of your flesh for analysis. The office contacts you promptly with the results. The nurses and office staff are most competent and professional. You can always call Dr. Phieffer personally with any questions; this is something you cannot see anywhere anymore. I have been a patient of Dr Phieffers for a few years. I've only been one time for an annual mole check and once before that for a massive pimple a week before my wedding five years ago. Today I had another appointment to get a couple of suspicious moles checked that I noticed had changed during my pregnancy. My baby is one month old. My new born doesn't care for others holding her yet, and I knew it would be impossible to leave her with anyone for the length of the appointment time so I knew I needed to bring her with me to see dr Phieffer. I asked the receptionist if it was alright that I brought her with me the day I booked my appt and they said no problem. While I was at the office today, my baby was crying so terribly. I felt awful. For her and for everyone in the office. While I waited in the room for the dr to come see me, my baby would not stop crying if I put her down to change into my exam robe or sit in the chair to be examined. After a quick check by Dr Phieffer, We figured out that I needed a couple of biopsies done. While I was being prepped for them, my baby continued to cry. A super sweet lady from the front office came in and offered to hold her for me while I had my biopsies done. The fact that they worked so hard to see me and my appointment through without making me feel as if I should reschedule, is why I'm writing this review. Dr Phieffer is an amazing dermatologist and I trust her completely with my skincare needs. But today, her office really showed another level of courtesy by helping this struggling mommy take care of her health care needs. Thanks to them for making a difficult situation manageable. I had an injury during a chemical procedure, which caused a swollen cornea and added expense for eye treatment. The procedure was unsuccessful because Dr. Phieffer: 1) did not have eye wash kit available, 2) she directed me to stand under a cold shower which effectively canceled the chemical peel (instructions state not use water for 8 hours), 3) she declined reimbursement for unsatisfactory service. read more

When I called to see if they had availability to accept new clients and could set up an appt within the next month they had an appointment slot a few days away! I was so excited to be seen so quickly ! My doctor is very nice and listens very well and the assistants are always so happy and sweet that I feel like I'm not judged by my bad skin, they def. make you feel comfortable and welcomed and they do a great job or providing instructions and give me a lot of free samples to try before I have to fill a prescription to help save me money. Which is awesome esp since I never has to ask for a sample because I didn't know they had samples! I'm usually in and out in about 15 mins :) read more
