My family has gone to this practice for over 20 years. The doctors are very good and I have no issue with any of them. We've always gotten good care here. My issue is with their front of office/ office management. I had to cancel an appointment I'd been waiting weeks for last November, due to a snowstorm. It was for a pretty urgent and critical issue. When I tried to reschedule it, I was shocked that the soonest I could be seen was in March! I asked if they could call if they had a cancellation and was told "no" but I could call them every week and ask. It's finally March, and I've endured intense suffering for months now. I've been to urgent cares and my regular doctor, trying to manage what's going on, but it's really a specialist issue. It's less than a week before my appointment and still no confirmation from them so I had to call myself. Add the horrible phone maze to this, and I really wish I could find a dermatologist practice that isn't overbooked like this, and treats people a little more kindly. read more

Can't get a timely appointment ~ can't call and reschedule without being ditched to message system and then they threaten to charge you for an appointment missed after you tried 4 times to change it. Dr. Payne and her assistant were wonderful. The phone and appointment system are ... a complete mess. I was told after a recent biopsy that detected a possible melanoma that I MUST return in two months for a second biopsy, which someone would call THE NEXT DAY to schedule. That call NEVER came, so ten days later (today), I called them. I was told there were no appointments available in that time frame, and I'd have to wait for someone else to cancel. I am worried about a potentially lethal condition and now I'm supposed to "get in line" for followup procedure I was told was necesssary?????? My guess is that they have outsourced this part of their practice ... and ... it stinks. read more

Dr Petrie is wonderful he explains what is the best procedure for your condition, his professionalism is very confronting and he always has a smile which makes you feel at ease I would highly recommend commonwealth dermatology to anyone who needs or thinks they need skin attention and I don't want to forget the PAs ,office staff and all the nurses are wonderful as well read more

WASTE OF TIME! The incompetent scheduling staff never confirmed whether my insurance was in network or not even though I provided them with all of my info. I've desperately been needing to see a dermatologist, I showed up for my appt & they told me I was out of network. I took off from work, changed my schedule around canceled other appts, only to be disappointed. Now I have to wait months to see a different dermatologist for an urgent issue. I even asked if I could pay less than the self pay amount ($170) since I was already there & the mistake was on there part but they said no. They didn't try to fix the situation at all. I wouldn't recommend this practice since their staff can't even do the bare minimum! read more

My first time here. The preliminary check in is via computer in the waiting room (something new for this old guy), then a second face to face with a staffer, which I found ok. My wait was very short, and I was taken to an exam room for preliminary work up by a second staff person. Then saw Dr. Nath, who was open and friendly. He did a full body exam, and took several samples for biopsies. I enrolled in their portal, and had access to my biopsy results in one day. For a first visit I was very reassured at the level of professionalism shown at each point of contact. read more

I was really excited to be able to have an opportunity to speak with a professional about my health concerns regarding my skin. For this review, I'm going to just put aside how long it took to get an appointment. When I got in the room, not only did I immediately feel dismissed about all concerns, I also showed the doctor my stretch marks and she audibly gasped. I don't think body shaming is a good trait for any doctors bedside manner. The appointment lasted all of 10 minutes, nothing was clearly explained or properly addressed, and I felt as the other reviews were saying, like a cog in a machine. I have already moved on to another dermatologist and will not be returning. Would not recommend. read more

There is hardly any communication with the office by phone possible. It is requested to communicate with the doctor and office through the portal. I had a problem with their webpage/portal. It did not function properly. There was no way to reach a person by phone. The automated answering machine does not offer an option to talk to the receptionist. All other options are recorded messages except one that allowed me to leave a message. I liked my doctor but the organization and the communication is below standard. I feel uncomfortable having to deal with communication issues trying to reach my doctor. The staff appears not to care what patients need. They are not interested in talking to them. I will find another organization that cares. read more

I have been going to this practice for 5 or 6+ years for regular check ups. I dread calling and listening to a 5 minute recorded menu. Worse yet, I just called today - July 21st, and was told that a doctor had an appointment available for me in FEBRUARY. No thank you. I will call someone else. We've been going to commonwealth dermatology for my daughter for years and have always been very pleased with the service... however we called recently to set up an appointment for my son and was basically told "sorry we don't have anything until August". They didn't even bother to ask me when what my availability was... I find it hard to believe ALL of the appointments from not until August are booked. So I asked if I should be looking to make an appointment elsewhere if I wanted to be seen before August, to which the receptionist responded "yeah probably". Well, I followed her advice and got my son an appointment scheduled for next week at another dermatologist. Sadly they don't seem to care much about their patients.... read more

Ever since Hazel Konerding retired this place has gone down hill. I had been going here for over a decade and when I had a severe eczema breakout and called asking for them to call in a prescription the day before I went on vacation I was told sorry, you haven't been here in a year. I explained that I would be happy to make an appointment, but can I just get one prescription for some ointment so I can get it under control before vacation and I was told again no sorry you can call the main office and schedule an appointment. I said I'll have to go to patient first urgent care then since I have to have something before I leave on vacation and they could have cared less they again just said ok. I'm leaving and will be going to another practice. This decision has been long overdue as some of the staff are extremely rude, but this just solidified everything and I will never go back. read more

I've been going here for years as has my son. As of today I will not return and should have made this decision a year or 2 ago. I had my yearly check up scheduled for today. The woman at the front desk was so rude from the second I walked in ,the attitude and lack of decorum was astonishing! She lacked every skill one would expect a front end receptionist to have. I was 15 mins late to my appointment, I made an error with the time. Once that was brought to my attention I apologized ( remember I've been going for years and have never been late before ) I was so gruffly and rudely told that because I was late the Dr was prepared to look at "part or me " what does that mean..... an arm, a leg how unprofessional, such bad grammar and severe lack of communication skills by the front desk clerk. I've previously sat there for over an hour waiting for appointments before never saying anything. My son was misdiagnosed by one of the Drs which led to more pain, more irritation on his skin and a trip to another Dr. Billing is equally rude and no one ever answers the phones or returns phone calls. I wouldn't go here many many other better places out there! read more

Took over two months to get an appointment for a mole that would bleed, and a couple other areas of concern.. On the day of they texted a message cancelling (person got sick, no problem). I had to call them to try and schedule another appointment and they said the first one would be another 2 1/2 months out--so nearly six months for someone to look at a couple of areas of concern. I understand people get sick but this was utterly ridiculous. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. I have been bringing my children to this practice for 18 years and have spent hours in their waiting room over that time. Yesterday we were 15 min late for an appointment and when we checked in we were told sorry you're late we can't see you. I explained I had driven two hours for the appointment and been stuck in traffic on I-64 and that's why we were late. They did not care. I did not get into the fact that my son tried to call and tell them we'd be late but could not get an actual human on the phone to talk to. So I asked for the forms to have all of my family's records transferred to another practice and left. They will not be getting another penny from us! read more

I agree with the other recent reviews. I called for an appointment for a dermatology-related injury and was told that I'd have to wait at least a couple of weeks. I would understand and be okay with this for non-urgent issues, but not for something that is actively causing pain and more. read more

No appointments until October. The doctor I saw previously has left the practice. The person on the phone didn't know if they performed the procedure I was asking about. When I asked why it would take so long to get an appointment was told it was because doctors were retiring and they had to replace them. (Did that come a a big surprise that they were prepared for?) Dr. Agarwal is awesome! Very patient with a scared 10-year old. A particular front desk person is very rude and will try to collect the full fee upfront even if you have insurance. The billing section credited the insurance payment as a negative number which actually added that figure to the balance due. They attempted to collect this extra amount on the second visit. Then the second visit billing had the insurance payment off by one decimal place, in their favor, and they attempted to collect an additional $50! Billing is either incompetent of trying to pad their pockets. We wish Dr. Agarwal worked for a different practice. read more

My now 22 year old son has an autoimmune scalp condition. He saw Dr. Shin for years but when he turned 21, we were told he could no longer see her as she only sees pediatric patients. His scalp condition had been beautifully managed by Accutane. Once Dr. Shin was no longer his physician this changed dramatically. The NP that took over his care would not prescribe the medication anymore and wanted him to use topicals, which if she had bothered to read his chart, do not work for his condition and the lackluster efficacy of topicals were well documented by Dr. Shin. He flares when stressed and did so when the fall semester started. No appointments until March. 6 months for an appointment for a kid with angry, painful pustules all over his scalp?!? I called the nurse line and did not get any help there, either. Just snide comments, punctuated by uncomfortable silence, and the nurse abruptly hung up without indicating the call was over. I'm done with this practice and cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone. read more

I was told that since I didn't meet my deductible I had to pay for the full office visit...$140.....so I paid, then I receive a letter from my insurance company showing what claims they have paid......Commonwealth Dermatology billed my insurance company for a visit that I paid for on my debit card! They received payment twice for one visit. When I called to get a refund, I keep getting voicemail and no one has called me back..... read more

They have you on hold forever. The recording continuously advises you're the 1st caller in the queue, however you remain on hold for another 3-5 minutes. Then when someone finally picks up they are not friendly, but very short, almost rude. I wouldn't recommend this office to anyone EVER! read more

If you have any skin condition whatsoever-- from something as serious as skin cancer to something cosmetic like stretch marks-- go here. Thankfully I haven't had to go to Commonwealth Dermatology for quite some time. But when I noticed there were no reviews for this amazing place, I decided I'd better hop to it to let everyone know how great it is! Growing up, sure I had some acne issues here and there, but it was nothing a little birth control couldn't fix! Normally that's what people think about when you mention going to a dermatologist. However, ever since childhood I have had issues with getting lighter skin patches on my face and the trunk of my body. This problem has popped up at 2 different times in my life. When I was younger, it was easily solved with creams from a Pediatrician. However, when it popped up again around middle and high school, I started getting way more self conscious about it and decided I needed to get checked out. I went to Commonwealth Dermatology and discovered the great Dr. Hazel Vernon. She treated me for about a year or so with no changes. When we both realized that nothing was working, she did some more research and came back with a diagnoses that sounded more intimidating than it actually was. After all of those years of creams, it turns out the same "germ" that causes acne was causing my hyperpigmentation. The solution? Rub drug store brand acne face wash on that part of my body for a few months and see what happens. Bingo! Problem solved. The best part about my entire situation was how much care Dr. Vernon took when treating me. She made it her mission to get down to the bottom of the diagnosis; something no other doctor had ever done before. So, it was no surprise that years later, when weird pitting showed up in my nails, that I went back to her. Dr. Vernon immediately suspected psoriasis and treated it as such. Again, she was right on the money. Treatment worked and my nails are right back to normal. I won't go to anyone else in Richmond and you shouldn't either! read more

So this was my 3rd time visiting this dermatologist. I worked with dr. Reece before and she was amazing. Unfortunately, she left the practice and I had a different doctor. Not the same experience for sure. He was average overall but I don't think he did the best job that he could. Hopefully my next visit Will be better. read more

Called their office today. The young woman that answered didn't state her name, based on her short and snippy demeanor it all makes sense. Obviously it's far easier to be rude and get away with it if the caller doesn't know your name. Clearly receptionist was annoyed over whether or not they accepted my insurance. This place demonstrates everything that's eff'd up about American health system. Long wait, short, efficient, but yet scratch-the-surface visits, slow diagnosis process, and abhorrent bill that comes afterward. I received very good recommendation from others about Dr. Konerding. But apparently she does not take any new patients. My first visit was scheduled 2-3 weeks before my actual visit with another doc. My wait to see the doctor was over whopping 2 HOURS. My visit lasted 5 minutes. I got $200+ bill after. This practice is obviously enormously popular and it's full of people. Maybe that's the reason for tardiness but is rather go elsewhere that treats me like a patient. Not a chart. read more

Dr. Shinn has made such a difference in the health and appearance of my skin. I heard about her because all of my friends spoke so highly of her--and the reality lived up to the praise! She thoroughly listened to all of my needs and prescribed a few new products catered to my skin. In my experience, it's a rare to actually feel listened to during a doctor's appointment. The products she prescribed have kept my skin calm for years now. I would recommend her office to anyone looking for an effective and helpful dermatologist. read more

The first visit myself and my 2 year old sat and waited for an hour and never even made it back to the private room- where as everyone knows you have to continue to wait even longer before you're seen. How is an office that far behind schedule Before Lunch?!? 2 other patients had also had enough of the waiting and they left. So I rescheduled for Friday at 8am. When we arrived I was told that the NP that I had originally scheduled an appointment with wasn't in the building and that I would be seeing someone else. I have been here twice over the past year and have not had any of the issues that most of the reviewers have had. I was actually running late due to traffic for my most recent appointment. I called ahead and explained the situation and expected a drawn out wait in the waiting room. I arrived 10 minutes late and was taken back to the exam room within 5 minutes. There was a little wait in the exam room but it was not unreasonable by my standards. My doctor performed a very thorough exam and I was satisfied with the overall experience. read more

I've been going to this place for my children for about 15 years. The Doctor's are fine, not the friendliest, but fine. And competent. The environment is nice, especially not that they are in their current building. What I can't stand is the poor customer service! OMG. I took my daughter there for a 9:00 AM appt. We get there 10 minutes early (because I've learned my lesson). We still don't see the Doctor for another 45 minutes!!!!!! Are you kidding me???? Went in to have some suspicious spots on my ears checked. The doctored believed them to be sun exposure related and possibly pre-cancerous and froze them. Didn't bother to check by back or anything. Hard to be aware of anything on my back, well because its my back. The nurse said full screenings require a separate appointment and they have 30 other appointments. Don't usually write any kind of review, but I am in the medical field and work with pediatric patients, so I feel strongly about what I am about to write. Went to see Dr. Vernon, a Pediatric Dermatologist with my daughter, thinking she may have more to offer that the usual NP that we see. Dr. Vernon, immediately came into the room and announced that there was nothing she could do for my daughter, which would be fine if it was followed by a caring and thoughtful bedside manner. This physician had the WORST attitude. She was nastier than any physician I have ever had the displeasure of working with or seeing as a patient. PLEASE do not take your pediatric patient to someone that seems to dislike children...or people for that matter. Never Ever Again! Extremely disappointed, and saddened that there are medical professionals that care so little about trying to be kind, caring people. Lost a little faith in medicine today. read more
