Not sure what's up with the low reviews (especially the racist one). This is a charming park. Set back through the greenspace next to the Salado Creek off Rittiman Rd near Fort Sam Houston lies John James Park, a reasonably sized, quiet park.
This is the nearest park to my home, so we visit often. More often than not, we are the only people visiting the playground, but in the afternoons and evenings, you'll find a handful of families enjoying the amenities. These include a small playscape, BBQ grills, picnic tables, benches, city-maintained latrines, drinking fountains, exercise equipment, and a jogging trail.
The trail leads back into a woodsy area that throws you back into nature. My kids love it. The train is remarkably much longer than it appears it would be from the outside. Unlike the areas adjacent to Salado Creek, the wooded area is free of homeless campsites. Perhaps because of the close proximity to the Fort or maybe because it's just too out of the way.
There is a large green space used as soccer fields, but when not in use, perfect for a game of catch or flying kites. There's a good number of birds and wildlife inhabiting the park and surrounding area. I've noticed a number of bird watchers visiting. In fact, yesterday we watch a heron fly overhead.
The serenity that can be found here on a cool spring morning is incredible.
Note that people frequent the park to refill on water from the fountain and nap in their vehicles the parking lot. They usually keep to themselves. I've felt threatened for my family's safety even though the park is nestled away from the beaten path in an area that isn't known to be the safest. read more
