This is most evident on chilly winter nights when Stratford plays a home football game at the adjacent Tully Stadium. I know it's time to pack up and head over to watch the game when I start hearing the Stratford band's drum section and the sound of the announcer's voice reverberate throughout the neighborhood. It is the single most important cohesive force in the area. Everyone goes to the game. It's three generations now: grandparents, parents (many who attended Stratford themselves) and the kids. Other neighbors who have no affiliation with Stratford at all go because it's where everyone else is on a Friday night. For hardcore Stratford fans, Stratford's 1978 Division 5A State Championship team will always loom large. Visions of more football glory of this sort cropped up again during the 2007 fall season because a phenomenal athlete, Andrew Luck (son of Oliver Luck who was a quarterback for the Oilers and is currently the President of the Houston Dynamo), was able to hoist the whole football program on his shoulders, quarterback them to the district title and then power the team through several early rounds of the state championship tournament. Now that Stratford's football program is back to its normal mediocrity in the post-Luck era, Stratford fans are content when the team beats its arch-rival, Memorial High School. In many ways, it's a pity that, here in Texas, the football program defines a school's identity. At Stratford for instance, the girl's volleyball team is much more of a perennial contender in the city and state than the football program ever has been. I've had one daughter graduate from Stratford, another currently is a student there and I have son who's in the queue to attend Stratford when he gets out of Middle School. I believe my kids are lucky. Stratford is consistently one of the highest-ranked schools in the United States per Newsweek magazine. It has an outstanding orchestra program. The Stratford Playhouse puts on productions of which many college programs would be very envious. Its Academy of Science and Engineering provides a unique opportunity for America's future technology leaders to flex their mental muscles. The best endorsement I can give the school, however, is to repeat what my daughter (who just completed her first semester at UT Austin) told me after making UT's honor role: "Dad, Stratford actually prepared me very well for college." Good job, Stratford. Go Spartans!

Unqualified, low qualified, non fluent English speaking teachers hired to teach AP classes, coaches teaching AP Classes so as the students are not prepared for AP exams. Minimal oversight on teachers. Teachers creating their own policies that are not compliant with district policies. Students that want to eagerly participate in sports are discouraged by coaches behaviors, tempers and failure to follow district policies about training in outdoor heat in access of 100 degrees. Coaches pick and keep "favorite athletes". The tryouts are just to go thru the motions to keep an" appearance of fairness" Some Clubs are fictional on the website, where most don't exist, the ones that do exist are disorganized and poorly run (teachers canceling last minute and late to their own meetings). The school is absolute garbage. Support staff are a joke and the counselors have little knowledge on how to advise the kids. Parents and kids will get the runaround if asking questions. If you are new. Good luck to you and your kids finding out when anything happens. The school staff will tell you sign up for Twitter to find out.
