Though we eat here fairly frequently and enjoy it, I just can't bring myself to tip Jalapeno's up to that fourth star, and I'm not sure I can articulate why. The servers here are incredibly friendly, but the service itself is sometimes kind of frenzied and awkward. It seems your table doesn't really have one server, just whoever happens to pass by, which means requests can sometimes get lost along the way. The food is almost always lightning fast to the table, though on one or two occasions it's been painfully slow (which no one on staff noticed, a problem with not actually having an assigned server). The food itself is... well, it really is just okay. It's never bad (except for that one spinach burrito I got), but it's never great (except for their beans, which I have a bit of a love affair with), and it kind of seems like the kitchen doesn't care a lot about what's going out on the plates. Obviously Jalapeno's is a million steps up from the likes of Taco Bell, but at the same time, it seems quite a few steps away from real Mexican cuisine as well. read more

I can't compare their food to other Mexican restaurants in the area, but what I tried for lunch was decent. They had a lunch special and provided chips and salsa on the table (like any other Mexican restaurant you go to). Stopped here after school with a group of friends. Never again! As a student from the city of Chicago, I am better off driving 3 hours back home to get real authentic Mexican food. The chips were ok, salsa was so watery, no taste. As for the food, I ordered a chicken burrito that was stuffed with rice, beans, and drenched in some red sauce topped with cheese. I didn't eat half of it. 2 of my friends ended up getting sick and they ordered the pork tacos. Should have listened negative reviews. The up side is the wait staff was friendly and attentive. The chips and salsa were ok and the highlight of the food. I ordered a taco and Chile Relleno combo. The taco came on a pre-made shell and the meat was very dry and salty. The Chili Relleno was terrible, I had to scour the dish to find any pepper and finally found about a 1" square of pepper mixed among a glob of I am not sure what. Stopped here during a trip to the state softball games. Worst Mexican food I've ever had. Chips n salsa were bland, red sauce tasted old, guacamole tasted packaged and not fresh. We have been here twice, and the first time I was very impressed. They have wonderfully flavorful salsa and serve a great chimichanga. BUT... We went again today and was sadly disappointed with the "beef" in the burritos, tacos, etc. The smell of the "beef" alone triggered my gag reflex and I could not stomach it. I can only describe it as an odor not unlike very cheap cat food. I also didn't like the salsa served in old wooden bowls... Seriously, how do they sanitize those things? I asked for a different entree since the "meat" was so disgusting and they did bring me something else and were very courteous about it. Sadly though I cannot say I will ever return. Tacos, tacos, tacossssss! Jalapenos has the best tacos in Peoria. Service is friendly and fast. You start out with chips and salsa. The salsa is full of flavor and spice. Order tacos. Do not order the cheap ones that come with your standard hard shells, ground beef, or shredded chicken. Order the premium tacos that are listed above that option. I recommend the ChoriPollo tacos (chicken and chorizo) or just the chicken tacos (not shredded). Order a side of shredded cheese, not the queso dip. Guacomole is basic here so no need for that. It will come with rice and beans, and you will be floored by the beans. I hate beans. I have always hated the beans and rice that have come with tacos until Jalapenos. They have mastered the art of beans they are so darn tasty. Moving on, the tomatillo sauce has the perfect amount of spice and flavor...muy delicioso! I have tried other things on the menu and I am not impressed by them. Everything else is subpar but those tacos are phenomenal. read more

There are a few Mexican restaurants in Peoria, and to be honest, this one is just decent. The food is not the best, but the service is very good. They have a lot of wait staff so you are always good to go with refills, fresh chips/salsa, and ofcourse your food comes out in like 10 minutes. They also have very cheap lunch specials (about $5). Their strawberry margarita is also good. I usually get the taco salad or now, more often, the taquitos mexicanos. It is tasty, but could be better. So, all in all, good place, but not the best in the area. read more

Jalepenos was on top of their game like I've never seen tonight. The service was outstanding, from our friendly and attentive waitress, to many smiling visits from different waitstaff, and our beverages being constantly refilled all night. The menu seemed brand new with lots of new items. I had the pulled pork tacos and they were truly fantastic, with delicious little corn tortillas, tender, juicy meat, just the right amount of BBQ, and a wonderful tomato, onion & red cabbage slaw on top. This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Peoria. Their food strikes me as being a little more "homey" than the more typical Mexican fare you will find at the other Mexican places in the area. Aside from that, the thing that really sets this place apart is the service. I have never had anything but outstanding service at this place. Was there today for a baby shower. The staff was very kind, and checked up on us quite often. The food was very good, although somewhat small portions. However, I ordered a $7 quesadilla. My sister did get a large amount of nachos (supremos), that would likely have to be split between two people in order to be finished, and that was around $11. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. They have amazing guacamole, and fish tacos! The service is usually pretty good, but they typically give you your personal space. I am person who enjoys that. The price is reasonable for the food. Highly recommend the chip and guac though! read more
