I came here because another place was closed, but man, I am glad it worked out that way. What a charming and colorful place! My mood was instantly lifted and I sat down at a booth near the window. Place was clean. Service was excellent, with no long wait times. The friendly waiter was attentive and gladly shared his personal recommendations. I was impressed with the entire menu. Not only do they offer classic Mexican dishes, but they have come up with many of their own culinary masterpieces. It was hard to choose, but I finally went with the Taco Salad. Fresh, flavorful, well-presented cuisine with generous portions to boot! They have perfected their house-made chips and salsa. I ordered a slice of cake to go. The food and service was horrible! There is absolutely nothing Tex-Mex about this place whatsoever!! The Re fried beans tasted like they were out of a can with no flavor of being re fried whatever! The menu was expansive and full of a lot of great items from some typical Tex-Mex items to your more authentic Mexican cuisine. I was pleasantly surprised. I have gotten so burned out on all of the local Tex-mex places. They all taste the same. I ordered carne guisada and it was GOOD! I'm not used to spicy carne guisada but I can sure get used to this. The bean dip and salsa is reason enough to visit, the food is reason enough to come back. New to downtown El Campo is Mexican restaurant that is shaking things up. They have a really simple menu of some authentic Mexican cuisine. To start off the chips are just out of the fryer when brought to the table. The salsa is chunky with fresh tomatoes, onion, cilantro and citrus which I found to be delicious. The guacamole app was the same with equal goodness. I had the al pastor tacos for dinner and they were amazing. The waitress was good at keeping my tea full which says a lot about their operation. This used to be our "go to" place after church every week. Have not been there for a while, and "had to" recently twice since there are not a lot of options in town. First time took a client, before lunch rush, and her meal was horrible, hair in her soup and what we would like to think it was a piece of cloth in her rice. ,the meat in my tacos was a bit on the burn side but I ate until I was full, did not touch beans. Decided to try this place because it's been difficult finding a Mexican restaurant with truly good Mexican or Tex-Mex food north of the Rio Grande Valley. Well, we hit the jackpot!! We had the taqueria or "street tacos" as other places call them. They're small corn tortilla tacos like the ones sold in the streets in Mexico, and they have queso fresco (Mexican cheese) and aguacate slices (avocado). We got the fajitas, the beef fajitas (even though there's no such thing as chicken fajitas--FYI). The tacos were perfect! The beef was actually fajitas, not steak cut up and sold as fajita. Fajitas is a cut of meat, like t-bone and sirloin. It's from a specific part of the cow. Many people don't know that and many restaurants sell steak as "fajita," which is like selling a sirloin and saying it's a T-bone steak. Chickens don't have a "belt area" or "skirt" area (as in beef skirt), so chicken "fajitas" are really either chicken breast or thigh meat sold as "fajitas." Anyway, the fajitas were cooked perfectly! The amount of cheese on each taco was perfect! And there were 5 tacos! Most restaurants serve only 4. Another pleasant surprise was that they have sopapillas, a pastry, and they were actually the real McCoy! Many restaurants actually sell buñuelos and say they are sopapillas. (Not sure about spelling) So this place is AWESOME!! I am planning on eating here every weekend if possible even though it's a half hour drive from home. The beans were good enough and we didn't get any rice. I'll have to get something with rice next time. If you've been looking for a good Mexican restaurant, eat here! If you're from the RGV like I am, you'll enjoy it better then any other place within a 100 mile (or more) radius. read more

Good Mexican food. Polite and friendly wait staff. I have eaten inside and picked up curbside. I often get their Jalapeño grilled chicken salad or the regular grilled chicken salad.
