Our first visit, the menu had offerings that were jumping off the menu 'Try Me' so much that the selection was difficult. It was noted the last time that the selection was pared down; this time the selection might have been a little tighter still but the prices went up: OK, they are subject to the same economic pressures that we are. The meal this time was just average: a good meal at a tall price and specifically not a great meal at a tall price. My friends and I came for brunch here one weekend. We came 30 minutes before our reservation, but they were happy to accommodate us. They seated us right away. Okay, let's talk food. I got the California Benedict and my friends got the crab cakes Benedict. We also ordered some mimosas because who eats brunch without mimosas. My Benny was made perfectly-- the hollandaise was very flavorful. My friends said their crab cakes were excellent. Fast, friendly service in the bar for Happy Hour. Brief but adequate menu. We both had the Cheeseburger and fries and 2 beers: $60 before tip. Burger was a bit dry but the flavor came through without the extra Condiment. Adding a bit of ketchup leftover from the fries added enough moisture. Had to come here for a second year of having the Beef Wellington. If you enjoy this dish, I would recommend giving Jak's a try. The beef medallion was good sized and cooked to a perfect medium rare with a nice flakey puff pastry shell and savory beef gravy. Came with asparagus and I chose the baked potato. Place was very busy for the holidays but we were seated quickly due to reservations. Ended up with a good booth in the back which helped with the noise. It's nice that they let you make reservations now as I remember waiting as first come first serve before. Food was delicious as always! For $2 they gave me the tiniest dollop of sourcream - not enough to spread over the entire potato. This place used to be so so good and a bargain compared to the higher-end steak houses in the area. I told all my friends about this place and they and their families and friends became regulars. But like a lot of restaurants after Covid, quality went down despite prices going up. The ribeye here used to be phenomenal--better than any steak I've had at higher end steak houses (El Gaucho/John Howie etc) in the area. That steak was so juicy and tender with a great smoky and fatty flavor. On my last few visits, the steak has been bland and tough (relatively to what a good ribeye normally tastes to me). Based on the menu, they changed their sourcing (previously from Nebraska, now California). Despite that the price went up around 50% The other way the value went down is with their side dishes. Previously any steak came with a potato side (potato pancake here is still pretty good), steamed veggies (the carrots were always amazing), and a side salad. At some point after Covid they made it only a potato and either a side salad or a side veggie. Then it became only a side veggie (carrots no longer an option) or potato. Next I'm sure no sides will be the standard. Maybe I could tolerate the price increase if the quality was what it was before. But I can't tolerate an increase in price while both quality and quantity have decreased. Won't be back read more

It was a special wedding anniversary and we love to go here for them. We have been regulars for about 15 years. Yesterday was the worst experience ever by far. What happened to this place? It was so good for so long. They lost our reservation by canceling it when it should not have been. The lady at the reception was flat out rude and treated me and my wife like very unwelcome interruptions. It was instantly stressful. We said it was our anniversary and would like a booth to celebrate nicely but instead she refused and forced us to sit in the noisiest part while half the place with many booth were empty the entire time we were there. The prices are higher which is true everywhere, but that does not justify the poor treatment and horrible attitude of the staff. Our server was clearly overworked and hard to fault that person. We really don't know if it isn't better just to find a new favorite at this point. JaK's completely ruined what should have been a nice special time with simplicity. Darkly lit, always packed... our special place to go! They have a decent wine selection, but the bartender makes fantastic martinis with the good kind of olives. We absolutely love, sharing a meal and having drinks at the bar. It's romantic. Some people dress up for a special occasion at this place and other people roll in in T-shirts and jeans. I think that's a Washington vibe. I personally think you should dress up a little bit for the special place. Yes, yes they are known for their steaks and they are fantastic. But if you're not in the mood for a steak, I will tell you their french dip sandwich and french fries are the bomb. They are sinfully delicious. This is probably my favorite meal on the menu. It is melt in your mouth delicious. Also, I'm not a giant, heavy meat eater, but these are the best burgers in town by far. I don't know how they do it, but their secret recipe is absolutely out of this world sensational. I'm trying not to walk around the earth, eating burgers, but this place is begging me too. They are truly on the money... They don't rush you, however, they are highly efficient, highly aware and they leave you alone and let you have a conversation as well. The service is definitely five star. This is probably the best service in town. I've always felt that the hostess stand is a little lacking, however. Saying that I think the hostess at this place has a very difficult job, juggling the waitlist and the crowd and trying to get the tables turned over. I wish they had a hostess that greeted you with a big smile and made you feel like you weren't the next problem walking in the door. However, I'm sure it is an exasperating job dealing with so many people who want to eat here every night. So I get it. For years, this place did not take reservations and you just had to stand in line, sometimes outside. I am so grateful they now take reservations. On super busy nights, we've never had to wait more than 15 minutes... And we usually squeeze into the bar. Yous who follow my reviews know, that as a chef, I'm a tough one to get four or five stars from, but this was an easy four stars! It is a higher end restaurant, more towards fine dining, so you won't go here to get Taco Bell prices. That being said, it's an amazing date night or night out with friends location. They have a full bar and wine by the cup or bottle (if that's ur thing), and the servers seem to be well versed in pairings. The food was excellent, I took a bite of the steak and told my hubby it "made my soul happy"!!! I would definitely go back there for a steak dinner! When you consider what it costs to buy a good, clean, steak and the time you have to take to prepare it and all the trimmings! This was well worth the price! My hubby had the fried chicken sandwich with a house salad. It was a lovely meal and quite well priced. Lovely sourdough bread came with our salads! We were both nearly full by the time our meals came! That's ok, because we both have leftovers to take home for tomorrow! Vanessa was a great server and quite pleasant! She had a beautiful smile, and was helpful in every way. We both look forward to going to Jak's Grill again, and hopefully having Vanessa as our server! The only two things that kept them from having five stars was that it was freezing inside. To be fair we were one of the first few couples to arrive once they opened, so I'm sure once it's filled with people it probably gets a bit warmer. However, for us, we were trying to hurry to finish because we were cold. We went on a Sunday morning after an early hike ... the restaurant was just beginning to fill ... it's clear that reservations are a good idea, though we were early enough to be seated without one. We had a crab-cake Benedict (yum, with lots of crab) and great smashed potatoes (roast potatoes, smashed just enough to aid in eating them), and the Baja scramble -- not sure we'd get the standard flour tortillas with these (I'd recommend toast or an English muffin instead), but the scramble was good. The coffee was pretty standard (no soy milk or almond milk though), and the pot of Earl Grey was both generous and with good quality tea. We'll be going back. read more

Went to JaK's on a Saturday for brunch. First. Really only street parking so make sure to get there early for that. Second. Make a reservation. We got there at 11 with a reservation and it was packed. Definitely died down around 1 but busy until then. Had the veggie scramble with bacon and it was delicious. The potatoes are insanely good. we ate here last night with a 7 pm dinner reservation on a Tuesday night. It was far more crowded than we expected! but we were seated right away. Our server came to the table almost when we sat down to give us attention, and then left us to consider the menu. (Unfortunately I did not get his name.) When he returned we had selected two entrees: the 6 oz. filet mignon (medium rare) and the 6 oz. Wagyu bavette (medium rare). I had the bavette because I wanted to try the Wagyu, and my wife had the filet because it is her favorite cut of meat. I also ordered the peppercorn demi-glace. Our salads arrived first. They were cold and well prepared. My wife had the "wedge" salad (which was really just a chopped-wedge salad) and I had the Caesar. The touch of lemon in my salad really highlighted the flavor. Then came our main dish. My bavette was served in slices. The taste was so very good, and the sauce (served on the side in a nice gravy "boat") was tasty and I could put on as much or as little as I wanted. (Note that the cut of the beef means that it's cut along the grain so it has more mouth texture than a steak cut against the grain. The long fibers gave a great mouth feel.) My wife loved the filet. it was perfectly cooked with a nice dark brown crust (not charged) and when cut open there was about an 1/8" line of cooked meat and then the rest of the meat was uniformly a dark pink. Our side dish was a shared order of onion rings. I know. Something so pedestrian! But it was really a perfect note with the meat, increasing the savory-ness of the meat. We took our time and the server came over frequently to make sure that we had no requests and kept our water glasses filled. (I also had a nice glass of Merlot which complemented the meat.) Then we split the dessert - carrot cake. It was not as we expected, being less oily or "moist" but it had a great flavor - a mix of the carrot and pineapple, with an orange creme frosting. The frosting also had orange zest mixed into it so there was a definite high note or orange when tasting the dense richness of the carrot cake. We enjoyed our experience, and while we do not often go to Jak's due to scheduling, we do want to return soon. read more
