Dr. Hernandez performed my hip replacement surgery in February of 2026. I only met him one time before the surgery as he has a whole team of care leading up to the surgery. But I felt very confident in him. Surgery day, he came to see me just before the surgery to see how I was doing. I was knocked out for the procedure and woke up in no time. I've had a great recovery. AVOID THIS DOCTOR! He doesn't even have the semblance of a bed-side manner, he doesn't have one. I went in for a hip replacement and had a recurring pain in my hip. His answer, he gives me a cortisone shot and doesn't do an MRI, just x-rays. He never greets you when he comes in? He just says, "What do you want?" As a patient I came to him for help in diagnosing the pain, etc., he doesn't want to be bothered. He is rude, non-communicative, etc. His nurse assistant ordered an MRI which revealed a torn muscle, and yet he didn't even address this in my appointment (and acknowledged he hadn't even read or looked at the MRI). I was in terrible pain and he said do you want a shot? I said his nurse Angeles had suggested that. He was rude. I said i was in a lot of pain and he seemed angry with me (he kept saying I'm not going to do surgery on you - I didn't have any idea as to why he kept saying that). He then insulted me and left the room, presumably to give me a shot. After waiting 2.5 hours to see him he kept me waiting another 20 minutes so I left to go to the restroom and saw his nurse and told him what happened. He said he would talk to Hernandez. When Hernandez came back he appeared mad at me and said "I'm not going to give you a shot, and he seemed enjoy watching me beg to get something for the pain relief. He finally relented and gave me a shot and told me he was referring me to other doctors who probably wound not see me because he is such an excellent doctor. This guy is a sadist and should not be practicing medicine. What has happened to SCOI that they would kept such a disgusting, vile, rude creep like this on staff. UCLA you better do something about him (he also has malpractice suits against him i understand). Avoid him like the plague!. read more

I found the process with Dr. Hernandez and his staff at SCOI pretty well handled overall. I am a Worker's Comp patient, so he is one of the physicians who do total knee replacements for WC patients. Once it was approved by the city agency I worked for, that is. In the beginning, communication with the staff was difficult, especially because I had an aortic valve replacement and they were unclear about how that was handled. Apparently if your EKG with SCOI shows some problem, then they look further into approving the surgery. Mine was fine. Communication could be better. Once I had the initial consultation, then the surgery, things went smoothly. With Worker' s Comp patients, a nurse case manager helps guide you through the process and made things much easier. Physical therapy also helped a lot, and I had two 12 week sessions of it. read more

Dr.Hernandez definitely knows his field and is very knowledgeable, but I felt he has no bedside manners. He was dismissive of my concerns and how I was feeling, especially when I asked what might happened if my hip dislocation happens again. I left the appointment with lots of information, but not reassured . It's too bad since 6 yrs ago Dr. Hernandez had excellent reviews, but the last yr not so . Dr. Hernandez is an amazing surgeon and during the initial interview he was very personable and friendly. He does 900 knee replacements a year robotically, so you can imagine that I would never talk to him again until 6 weeks after surgery. All else was handled by his very competent team and two PAs Mr Campbell and Mr Angeles. All my questions were answered through the GetWell Loop and dressings changed regularly by the excellent Home Health inpatient service offering in home PT and nursing care. My knee looks great now, as much as a major incision can look. I am confident that Dr. Hernandez's team will lead me to a successful conclusion. I would recommend Dr. Hernandez for knee replacement surgery. read more

Preformed reset my femur wrong! According to two Kaiser Doctors, Hernandez installed braces first prior to repairing the bone. This is backwards. I still can not walk after one year. Not only is Dr.Hernandez a bad surgeon he also has a terrible bedside manner. He lost his temper and yelled at my wife because she'd was 2 minutes late at the OR .to give permission to do the operation. Kaiser says they have reported him 5 times already. First appointment with Dr Hernandez was horrible. He was rude and arrogant, did not care to listen what the patient has to say and the past history of my pain. I have terrible knee pain on both legs and he assumed I'm going to request a surgery, which is quite the opposite. I try to avoid surgery and was looking for an advise on how I can alleviate the pain on both my knees. I requested for an MRI and he said I don't need it. I just want to know the real condition of my knees. He assumed I have a torn miniscus even though he has not seen any MRI scans. My xray report does not say torn miniscus and yet he made the assumption. He prescribed the MRI but only on my left knee, even though I have pain on both,. This doctor has no bedside manners. Many of these patients reviews echo my experience! It's shocking! He was completely dismissive, did not even touch me, or ask questions, or even look me in the eye. Now my condition is worse and I have wasted so much time for a non- visit...I keep going in circles because of his inaccurate diagnosis. It is almost a year after the surgery, and my aunt has still not recovered. She is disabled now because of this doctor. His license should be revoked. She also checked her medical report, and it was not accurate. In the report, it said he discussed the risks with her and her husband--he never did. In the report, it also said she did not have complication. Really, damaging a patients' nerve to the point where she cant walk is not a complication? She also had swelling and blood cloths after surgery, symptoms he ignored until she insisted on getting a scan, which showed cloths. Avoid this doctor at all costs! read more

Broke my right leg over a year ago & he took me in with the quickness & made everything super easy for me. His staff was super accommodating as well. I wrote a review about Dr. Hernandez awhile ago, what a great dentist he is but this time he went above and beyond the call of duty. I went in for a teeth cleaning and my husband was supposed to come with me because his upper and lower dentures were giving him a problem. He is compromised and did not feel well enough to come with me. So I just took his teeth and went. To my amazment Dr. Hernandez fixed the problem with out my husband being there. That's how good he is. I think he would have made a house call if we needed him too. The guy works magic!!! I reccomend him to anyone looking for a talented, reasonable, dentist (with a heart!) I first met Dr. Jamie Hernandez a few years ago when he did an evaluation on my hips. At the time he did not want me as a surgical patient as my hips were not bad enough for surgery. He would not perform any unnecessary or premature surgeries. It must be the right time. About a year later my right hip deteriorated enough, it required surgery. Dr. Hernandez did an anterior op without unnecessarily cutting muscle tissue allowing a very fast and complete recovery. It was a no brainer when my other (left) hip needed an operation last week, there was only one surgeon in town for me. Dr. Hernandez has proven himself to be a god among surgeons. I am not one who cares for doctors in general and surgeons in particular. Jamie is the rare exception. I am sure the results on the left hip will be every bit as good as the phenomenal results on the right hip. My wife also used Dr. Hernandez do a total knee replacement for her. She had six prior knee operations, none with Hernandez. He did one knee replacement and likely she'll not need any additional work. I cannot give any higher a recommendation then I do for Dr. Hernandez. His surgical abilities, bedside manner, professionalism, economics, and staff are reason enough for me not to use anyone but Dr Hernandez for knees and hips for my family. read more

My main reason for seeing Dr. Hernandez was because of a new pain in my left knee. I have to mention that I would no have gone to him if it wasn't that Dr. Karzel is sadly retiring and they shifted me to this doctor. He came into the exam room without introducing himself. He was 50 minutes late for my appointment and did not for one minute excuse himself. I do understand that doctor's appointments can sometimes run late but have the courtesy to excuse yourself for the delay. In reviewing my clinical notes after my appointment, I felt that I was reading another patient's report and not mine. I visited the Valencia office, yet the notes stated he saw me in the Van Nuys office. OK, maybe it was just an innocent mistake. I proceeded to read the rest of the notes where he stated I had dull to sharp pain in my knee (not what I wrote in the questionnaire I filled out). Rated the severity of the pain as a 4/5 when (I stated it was a 6). I also stated that I felt pain even when laying down in bed (no mention of this in his notes). Stated that I affirmed associated clicking and popping of the knee (not so). Let me say that my diagnosis was based solely on xrays taken, however, Dr. Hernandez mentions having palpated my knee. I also mentioned pain in my right hip and he reported in his notes that patient reports continued right hip pain (not so). As far as I am concerned, if his clinical notes are this sloppy, I wouild most certainly not trust him with any surgery. read more

I was referred to Dr. Hernandez for hip and knee replacement proceedures. After my first meeting with him I knew he was the surgeon for me. He was straight forward and reassuring. I found his confidence calming. I left his office excited and looking forward to the procedure. I was not only happy but astonished at the immediate result I felt the moment I woke up. I had been in constant excruciating pain for over 2 years. When I woke up I noticed right away the lack of pain or any discomfort for that matter! I was up walking (per usual now days) that afternoon, and walking farther the next day. My recovery was very easy. Physical Therapy at Southern California Orthopedic Institute was a great experience and imperative in the recovery process. They are all great people. I had my 2nd hip replacement in September. Again I left Dr. Hernandez's office excited and looking forward to the procedure. This one was just as great as the first. Recovery a little easier this time and physical therapy again imperative to my successful rehabilitation. I would recommend Dr. Hernandez and his staff to my family, friends and anyone in need of and looking for an expert team to take care of you from start to finish! So this Dr is listed as a good one but the SCOI location is ALWAYS OVERBOOKED. I have 3 different orthopedists here AND EVERY SINGLE APPT ENDED UP BEING A 90 MINUTE WAIT before even being called. Right now, its going on an hour and 45, so i asked the receptionist how much longer, and she apparently did not see my sign in and put me in the line. Pissed. I can't tell you how much dr. Hernandez made my life so much better. After 50 years of playing hard golf I needed a new hip. Dr. Hernandez was very professional and extremely confident that he could help me and he did. I went for my post-op visit with dr. Hernandez on the 6-week mark and the very next day I was playing golf at an extremely difficult course that was full of hills and Valleys. If you need to have any joint removed and replaced, this is the doctor to see.!! All of his staff were very friendly and quite informative and kept in touch with me quite a bit after I returned home from the hospital. I've noticed a few bad reviews and quite frankly I don't understand them. Dr. Hernandez is a surgeon, not a therapist. If you need someone to hold your hand , get a girlfriend or a boyfriend. If you don't like waiting around to see him, that's your problem , he doesn't make appointments, he just sees patients and he's not involved with making appointments. I waited over an hour to see him and I kept myself busy in that hour , so no big deal. Again, thank you Doctor Hernandez for making my life so much better in a very short period. Of time. I wrote another review about Dr. Jamie Hernandez on the SCOI site so this will be a repeat. Dr. Hernandez performed hip replacement surgery for me in June. He's great. Surgery went smoothly with no complications. I am almost back to normal at 6 weeks. Dr. Hernandez is very skilled and although he says , 'It's easy', it is not. It's major surgery and he knows what he is doing. He explained with clarity how the operation would go including risks. He is very straight forward and efficient. He did put me at ease in the hospital just before the surgery and I am grateful for the excellent work he has done on my hip. The team of assistants he has are also excellent. Six months after Dr. Hernandez performed a hip replacement, I am crippled. I think I was the 13th or 14th hip replacement he performed on August 2, 2017, and the results showed. My knee was probably sprained as they manipulated my leg during surgery, and, unrelated, the nerve damage running down my inside thigh from my groin has not abated since I woke up from the surgery. I have constant muscle spasms. But mostly, I'm just plain crippled. On my six week visit, Dr. Hernandez greeted me with a derisive, "Why are you using two canes?" as though I had done something wrong. He made it very clear that I would receive no post operative care of even concern from him, and he appeared baffled why I was in such terrible pain, as though his actions played no part in it. His office also kept me waiting for two hours, and seemed to save the last appointments for the crippled, unhappy patients. There was a lady in a wheelchair who was trying to be seen after me, and we were the last two patients, and I remember her screaming hysterically, demanding to see Dr. Hernandez. In conclusion, I recommend you avoid this doctor, because if something goes wrong, as it does 2% of the time in these replacement surgeries, he could care less. I also fault the SCOI organization for turning themselves from a fine orthopedic organization to a horrible factory. I have a feeling that these doctors have quotas, and it's quantity, not quality, that counts. read more

For the first time ever I let my husband pick his own doctor, what a mistake that was. On September 14th my husband had a total knee replacement by Dr. Hernandez. we followed all the directions from Dr. Hernandez and his associate Dr. Phan. The knee was worse with bending than before, even with the physical therapy and after 4 weeks we were told adhesions had grown and my husband needed an manipulation. Well on Nov 16th he had the manipulation. Today we went to see Dr. Phan and my husbands knee was alittle better bending then when he first had the knee replacement but not much better . I've never seen my husband so miserable. Running from Dr. Hernandez to Dr. Phan is a complete nuisance as Dr. Phan can't really tell us anything as it seems both doctors don't communicate to each other very well. We are still waiting for photos of the manipulation that Dr. Hernandez did but never put them in the computer for us to get. My husband is so upset about not bending his knee hardly at all with all the PT he has received. This is just not the way things work or we never would have had the knee surgery to begin with. So disappointed and my heart breaks on how much discomfort my husband is in. I would think twice before choosing this doctor for any kind of surgery. read more
