Jailhouse Grill had just what we were looking for. Wanted a dinner place with some meat and this restaurant had several options. Unexpectedly, they had a salad bar (all you can eat) which was a great way to start the meal. With several lettuce salads to choose from, olives, fresh tomatoes, apples, beets, etc, I found so many ingredients to make my salad just what I liked. For dinner, I chose the small rump which was like a 6-7oz ribeye. It was cooked perfectly to my specification. It came with roasted potatoes. The steak and potatoes were delicious. With the salad, it was a pert combo. Parking is on the street. We got a spot right in front of the place. Parking is free after 5:30pm so that was convenient. Apparently, the restaurant was never a jail, despite the bars on the windows, but the vibe was still fun and created a nice atmosphere. Service was excellent. Great stop. read more

We enjoyed the decor and ambience of the restaurant. Our young, inexperienced server was very nice and trying very hard. She needs training but with guidance she will be very.good We were surprised that there was an extra charge on the bill for the chips after they offered chips or roast potatoes. We were charged for a larger steak than we thought we ordered. The salad bar was okay but not great. Similarly the steak and chips were okay but not excellent. Jail house is abit pricey but you get what you pay for. If you can't afford fine dining but want a top quailty steak, then this is the place to go. The winner for me is the Salad bar its always fresh and you can go back for more. I like the atmosphere and character of the place its good for tourists to check out. First when I walked in - I had no idea what to expect - it seemed a bit 'american bistro' ... it was packed which is good on a Saturday night. We were squeezed into a booth and promptly offered drinks etc. Service was friendly and welcoming. I ordered the 180g Eye Fillet with the "jailhouse steak topping" (pan fried onions, mushrooms and bacon). Delicious - I think it was the best steak I have ever eaten... I never wanted it to end! 2 of my dining companions had the 400g version of this beauty and they were also very happy. The local cows must be very happy indeed! The salad bar was interesting, there was a lovely creamy and peppery warm pasta which I loved (I do adore dairy anything especially creamy pasta!). We went to the Jailhouse Grill on a Saturday night, and it was packed. Definitely make sure you book first! We had, but there was a mix-up with our booking - luckily we were able to still get a table. The service was good, the buffet salad and vegetable bar was interesting, but what was outstanding was my steak. I had the eye fillet, and it was AMAZING. Beautifully cooked, super rare, soft and delicious. Quite possibly the best steak I've ever had. My dining partner had the ribs, and they came with a warning on the menu: very chewy and salty. The warning wasn't joking either, that's exactly what they were. A massive amount of what was really more like super salty bacon attached to giant rib bones, with barbeque sauce. The sauce was good, not as overly sweet as usual rib sauces, but the meat really was quite overwhelming in flavour and saltiness. They didn't really quite fall apart like ribs often do, the meat was definitely chewier than the usual. We will be back, but next time we'll both be ordering steak! read more

I had dinner on a Tuesday night, highly recommend by the locals, staff where very nice When I eat out at a restaurant and order a steak, I want it to be amazing, something that you can not cook at home, this wasn't!! My steak was nice, small but nice, nothing that would make me want to run back in a hurry, $36 for a steak that was about 10mm thick, most scotch fillets are quite thick and tender, mine was thin and over done, the all you can eat salad bar was nice. read more

After hearing my husband rave on about this place I had high hopes. Our first meal in Launceston for the weekend just gone and I can't say I was blown away. The ambience was nice and the staff friendly, and I liked the idea of the salad bar with any meal (though a lot of salads contained red onion which I cannot eat). However my steak, which I was very, very much looking forward to (starving!) had no trace of pinkness and was dry and tough. I've definitely had better steak, but have also definitely had worse. The sauce I got was yummy - dark mushroom and bacon - if you're a salt lover you'll want to get this. From looking at past reviews and judging from my own experience though, they are not necessarily accurate when interpreting the correct cooking time for your steak. I would return, but I might not order a steak next time. I might try the salmon or something else from the menu. Wish we'd had room for dessert. I do love me a sticky date pud! read more

The restaurant was recommended by a friend. We walked in without any booking and the place was jumping but we managed to find ourselves a table. The place is famous for its grilled steak but I was not ready to have a whole piece of steak by myself so I had an entree with salad from the Salad Bar. The selection at the Salad Bar was amazing. There was the normal pasta, rice, potato salads. On top of them, they had some lovely leaf salad, beetroot salad, etc. My dinner partner had a perfectly cooked steak and was totally contented with the choice. I probably won't go back as I don't live in Launceston but I am happy we went there for our last meal in Hobart. read more

Honestly, as a local of three years' tenure, one of the best places to eat in Launceston. Food in Launceston tends to be mediocre and expensive, so when you get a place where the food is generously portioned, perfectly cooked and cheaper than a mainland premium steakhouse, it's a real feather in their cap. They're also open 365 days a year- not sure how they do it. You can safely disregard any reviews under four stars. This place is constantly booked solid for dinner every night. That says more about Jailhouse than any number of snooty amateur reviewers possibly could. Best advice is book in advance, they have an 'emergency table' for couples that show up without a booking and it's not nice on a cold, wet night! read more

My friend and I ordered a rare scotch fillet steak & pork scotch fillet. Cooked perfect as the photo shows. May be one of the best steaks I had in a long while. Friendly waiters as well! Glad I came back for the fifth time :D read more

Went here while on a brief trip to Launceston. I've given this place 2 stars but would have given 2 and a half if I could. It's an ok place but nothing spectacular. I had eye fillet and my partner had the ribs. My fillet was over cooked and the warning on the ribs (salty and chewy) should NOT be ignored. If you're looking for BBQ ribs then definitely don't bother - they are more like boiled gammon. The free salad bar is also a bit blah, I personally wouldn't bother with it. Best part was the included salad bar. Excellent grilled veggies. Carpet bagger steak was expensive but flavorless outside of the overt fishiness of oysters. Even though the steak was rare, it was dry (like shoe leather according to my companion). The jailhouse burger was ok but nothing to write home about. Very disappointing! I ordered the bacon wrapped scallops and they were revolting. The scallops had roe attached which was really unappetising. The bacon was "sweet" tasting and much too thick. I would have pan fried the scallops first then wrapped very thinly sliced bacon around. I won't go again. read more

Went the the Jailhouse Grill for Saturday lunch because another place wasn't open. No booking was required, the place was nearly empty which suited us nicely. Had the Cajun Salmon which was excellent and melted in the mouth. The food was well presented and served. Service was outstanding. I'd certainly recommend the Jailhouse Grill for a Saturday lunch. It was 3rd August we were starving after a long 1st day of touring the Nth Western Tassie we saw advert on Spirit of Tasmania and our Hotel Auldington also highly recommended ....it being 6deg out side we walked in to a vibrant warm environment we had great conversations with all the staff about our first day in Tassie they highly recommended Spreyton ciders (my husband had apple and i had pear) also informed is of all the local produce they used for there steaks and there side we had fast informed friendly service ,food was deliciously fresh n tasty and cooked to our liking , 5 thumbs up ie Stars guys ...we will be back n we will spread the word back home to all family n friends thx for a great feed read more
